    mmm tuning the maybach duet. That s just sheer brilliance. Who needs highspeed or eletrification when you could have a western!

    Beautiful sound of the Maybach ....you just can't beat it. Such a shame these magnificent beasts had such a short service life, I remember watching them thunder through Newbury station as a kid in the 70's. As they were taken out of service and most scrapped after barely 10 years on the Western region, thank god a few survive.

    Fantastic sound only matched by a Deltic. You British people had a great time when Classes 20 to 56 were all in regular service! At least the 56's remain. Still have to watch some Class 60 videos. Have no idea how they sound yet.

      Sergio Kodemo only one sound better than this, that is a Rolls Royce Merlin engine, of which I have made parts for. But followed these since I was 10 in 1970 and spent weeks on holiday in Dawlish with a rail rover behind these great locomotives

  • @dartskipper3170
    @dartskipper3170 Рік тому

    I knew a chap in the 1970's who had worked on the Warship Maybachs at Laira. He said they were a nightmare due to lack of room and it was the British built bits that kept breaking. The first German built engines were OK but the British ancillaries were junk. Spanner steam heating boilers were out of service most of the time. Later on they left the Maybachs ticking over rather than shut them down because the batteries were clapped out too.

    Ah, beautiful! Perhaps ironic that almost identical engines were used in the heavier German tanks (the Tiger I being the most memorable) in WW2. One of the major differences was that those engines ran on gasoline. Love this sound, though, thanks for the upload :) J

    Hmm from the time between 1:13 to when engine startup at 1:45, is it the period of time where the lube oil priming pump pumping the lube oil/turbine oil pressure to the required pressure before the engine runs? I worked on a similar engine before and thats about how it starts.

      tpvalley actually the westerns weren't reliable they suffered with hydrolic leaks and always broke down because they are not diesel electric they are diesel hydrolic which means the wheels are driven hydrolicly

  • @tpvalley

    Westerns gave good service evidently yes, but nothing competes with old or new EMD for reliability, economy and ease of maintenance unfortunately; have u seen how easy it is to change a piston (power pack- liner piston and rod), even the heads come off without removing exhaust manifold, they r a genius design. Give me old EE and sulzers anyday.

    OH MY GOD A 66 VEG!!!!!!!! 66's are one of the worst locos i have had the (dis)pleasure of riding in! I bet they overplay a better loco noise on simulators to make them sound acceptable!! Nothing can beat an old BR British build diesel!! Ever heard a 37 on full bore? that is proper porn!!

  • @SuperRubberFrog
    @SuperRubberFrog 12 років тому

    Actually i see class 66s almost every weekend, and you cant compare a simulator to real life. Most simulators don't even have realistic sounds on them. Also class 66s sounds awful next to a old BR diesel because of the ridiculous silencers they fit to them.
