  • Azelaic Acid is the current 'it girl' of skincare ingredients and as you know, I am completely obsessed!! But as with any ingredient with the word 'acid' in its name, there are some caveats to using it in your routine, especially when you're at the beginning of your azelaic acid journey.
In today's video I'm sharing 4 azelaic acid pitfalls that I've come across and how to avoid them for the best possible results.
As always, thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

    notes
    1. consistency - best outcome when using daily
    2. dosing best option is using half the dose every other day for at least 2 weeks
*at the beginning you can feel stinging and its normal, it should decrease in intensity over time as it correlates with better skin barrier function
*in the first stage you can have blemishes in the blemish prone zones because cleansing of skin begins, if it bothers you, you can do application of azelaic acid every other day or every third day, do not stop!!!!! keep going it will be better
    3. use in the evening, especially in the beginning, in isolation without layering other active ingredients
DO NOT COMBINE WITH BENZYL PEROXIDE, or AHA AT ONE TIME - > irritation (you can use them separately, at different time of day though)
    4. cell turnover should be fast enough, there is no need to use exfoliants

@@mehh1h I recently bumped up to 0.05% Tretinoin so I cut out all the other ingredients & am getting the same great results. I will add the Azelaic Acid back eventually but the Niacinamide kind of irritates my skin. A couple important things-I don’t wash my face in the morning, I use Aloe Vera Water (Trader Joe’s) on a cotton ball to cleanse. And I’m religious about my mineral sunscreen spf 50. Mineral sunscreen is key because it’s gentler, plus the zinc oxide is great for your skin barrier. It was hard for me to use Tretinoin cuz it’s so hardcore on my skin. So I used Differin (which is also a retinoid but not as strong) for a few months first, then SLOWLY worked up to Tretinoin. It’s been 6 months and I’m just now starting to be able to tolerate using it daily. If you use it on your arms and/or chest, be prepared that synthetic fabrics might give you a rash. I have to wear cotton only. I had decided to spend my time & energy on skincare rather than makeup & it’s great because I don’t have to wear foundation anymore! Don’t be sucked into thinking you have to spend a lot of money on skincare-i only use Rx Tretinoin and The Ordinary. Good luck! Oh! And take progress pictures!! Good luck!
(By the way I found out that I had been misdiagnosed with vitiligo-they are hypopigmented scars)

I started using azelaic acid when I was hospitalized for 3 weeks in 2020 for pregnancy complications. It was pretty boring at times and I found it unusually easy to follow a skincare routine. I used The Ordinary’s azelaic acid and lactic acid formulations and I saw a difference in as little as one week. I did use them in conjunction with one another, but it didn’t seem to cause me any problems. Idk if I just got lucky or if it the lactic acid was just a gentle enough AHA that made it more tolerable. I’ve never experienced such a noticeable improvement in my overall skin appearance as I did during that time. (After my baby was born however, the routine unfortunately went into the toilet -figuratively speaking. 😂)

I had used azelaic acid (15%) with niacinamide (10%) for 15 days, everyday, in my evening routine. When It caused irritation, I used it for 4 days a week with niacinamide as usual. The irritation persisted, and after one month, I was forced to stop everything because my skin barrier was badly damaged. Things to note, I did moisturise religiously on every occasion without fail, and I have sensitive acne prone skin. It has been almost 20 days since I stopped using it, my skin barrier has healed, but the acne has remained as is. With new breakouts everyday, and the PIH, everything is on a vicious loop, yet again. Any suggestion would be helpful. Thank you, Doctor. Credible content, as always.

      @barsha9518 Рік тому +8

@@slhilliard You might be right. The thing is, I had used the same niacinamide serum for the past one year, with visible improvements, and without any irritation. But, skin changes, I guess. Or, the application of such strong actives together might have made matters worse. On a lighter note, I feel so jealous of people with resilient skin: they can use multiple potent actives without any palpable repercussions. 😭

Ok so I have a LOT of issues. In the evenings I do Tranexamic acid, retinol and then azelaic acid. I added them in one at a time with a couple of weeks per item. My skin has never looked better. Not irritated at all. But I have used lower percentages with nicer formulas. My pigmentation has improved so much, I'm thrilled. I layer thinnest to thickest formula. I feel like the real changes start happening when I added the azelaic acid. My melasma just started to come off in big patches (nearly my whole face was brown). The new skin underneath is not irritated either. I started a skin care routine only 3 months ago (at 58) so I'm pretty happy with the way things are going.

As someone who previously thought he had Rosacea, and fungal acne, but it’s just diabetic skin (type 2), which has overlapping symptoms and similar triggers as Roeacea, I used Azealic Acid from The Ordinary without issues for X months (started during late fall/winter), only the stinging. My skin looked so good. Then bam! Started to break me out; red bumps and hives all of a sudden(!). Stopped. Recently started the one from Inkey List, same reaction, but much faster. Only after 2 days of use. I have sensitive skin… I guess 10% is too much.

Curious if you use vitamin C in the morning ever? I was advised to use Vit C in am only but that’s when I use my 15% rx azelaic acid gel. I read you could use together but this video says not to do so in the beginning, but instead to use at different times of day (except given Vit C is am only and this doctor said to use Azelaic Acid daily, and not after Tretinoin at night at first, I’m confused about when exactly I can apply athletic acid if I’m using vitamin C every morning. You may not even use the product but I thought maybe you or the doctor might see this and reply. I use my .25 Tretinoin at night twice a week to start, then will try to build up one more night a week as tolerated. I’ve seen some you tubers use A. Acid at night after applying Tretinoin but i think they’ve been using it for quite a while. As a newbie, I’m trying to follow my doc’s advice and hoping it will help me avoid any serious reactions that cause me to have to backtrack on my Tretinoin “journey.”

I have sensitive skin, so I had to change my vitamin C serum because I was too strong when combined to the azalaic acid. The only time I have to cut back in the frequency is when I travel from North America to Europe. Even if I hydrate my skin on the plane, it gets angry with me 😂… so I have to take it easy with my actives for a week or two. I don’t know if you’ve done it before but travel advice would be great! Next in my list is to try your serum. Thank you so much 😊

@@frenchyfrenchie you should stop using it. Azelaic acid, especially in higher concentrations (15% and 20%) can dry out your skin. Been there, I stopped using it. Focused on repairing my skin.
