  • The match that Ma Long never forgets
This is the Men Single Round 1/8 in the Rio Olympics. At the end, Jeoung Young-sik has burst into tears. He lost the game. But he earned the respect of everyone in the stadium, both from Ma Long and coach Liu.

I’m Chinese, and I watched that interview of Liu Guoliang. Here is what he said to Ma Long, more accurately: “As you walk out of the stadium, you lost already. You just lost the game for China in the most important international stage, the Olympics. Now when you walk back into the stadium with the new jersey, you must treat it as if 上天(Chinese way of saying God) just gave you the second chance for you to rewrite your life and history.”
Btw, before each Olympic, the Chinese national team also trains them to play with a starting big score of 0-2 or 0-3 in a best of 7 to build their resilience under extreme pressure.

During the same interview, Liu mentioned he also said this on the way for Ma Long jersey change, to remind Ma Long who is the boss: is he (Jeoung) better than Fang Bo? Is he better than Yan An? Both Fang Bo and Yan Ann are long time Chinese national team trainer (陪練). Fang Bo sometimes is referred by Chinese fans as Ping Pong measurement (度量衡). Meaning that if you are 1 Fang Bo, you can play confidently during any international game. If you are 1.2 Fang Bo, you can play confidently during Chinese domestic games. And if you are 1.5 Fang Bo, you are Ma Long lol.
I find this comment by Liu extremely funny and unintentionally insulting because Jeoung was giving Ma a very hard time during one of the most important games in his career and Liu Guoliang is saying this to cheer Ma Long up?? Wtf lol. If I were Jeoung, hearing this would make me cry even harder.

That’s why Liu Guoliang is the GOAT coach of table tennis. Ma Long DOMINATED games 3 and 4 enroute to bringing the match back to even grounds even after being down 2-0.
Then games 5 and 6 went the distance…and from there, the rest is history.

In the begging of the match, i cried for an prospect about to loose the most important tournament of his career. In the end, i cried for the amount of effort, time and dedication a man put in and still couldn't win.

Olympics always is the hardest competition for a player who try to be grand slam ( once every 4 years compare to once every 2 years of WTTC and every year of WC ) Ma Long know that there's not many 4-years in his career, he said that he played too carefully in a little bit moments and lost points because of that then him realized he need to be as usual, read the match and back to his rush attack form.

There are two more matches that Ma Long will never forget. Loss against Koki Niwa in the Olympic qualifier before London 2012 and the loss against Wang Hao in WTTC 2011 which cost him the spot in London

Ma Long as a GOAT?No,he is a smart player but for me Ma Lin is the greatest specially during his prime again Ma Lin’s single forehand attack no player on earth can react super fast to defend that’s shows superiority to the game. That superspeed without a spin show how powerful smash can end a game unlike Ma Long majority of his victory is due only to opponent mistake because he uses placing the ball smartly with heavy top spin any player on earth can react on it and block it but if Ma Lin’s sees he will only smash it then the smash is on difficult angle for the opponent to react. That is genuine idea of a strong mind player.Zhang Nike’s backhand is the deadliest of them all his only weakness is consistency however he won 2 gold medals from Olympic.Xu Xin underpin forehand attack is more powerful than Ma Long! Why?Because it creates unimaginable speed once it bounce to the opponent tables how I know because I’m doing it very energy consuming as the power came from the leg.Ma Long is afraid everytime he face Xu Xin he can’t utilize his placing skills against Xu Xin heavy underspin forehand attack his only chances of victory thru Xu Xin mistake.Overall,I salute Coach Lui for creating super elite player in Table Tennis!
