- I thought I had a major problem with this M8052 cardigan pattern. The shoulders and sleeves were giving me fits. But maybe it's not so bad, after all.

Hi Angela! You got lots of great advice from other commenters! I made this pattern under its old number (M6084) in April 2019. Looking back over the notes I made then, I also said it was very long and the front went down to my knees. My sleeve caps were too poofy - I’m sure due to my sewing skills at the time. At my try on stage I realized right away I would not wear it and I abandoned ship and decided to repurpose the fabric to something else. Yours looks better than mine did, even with your fitting issues 🙂
Hi Michelle!! Very interesting that you had the same experience that I did - and kind of a sanity check for me, haha! I think I was able to salvage it. I'm glad you were able to repurpose yours into something else. The public reveal video will be out tomorrow morning (Friday), and channel members can watch it now already. Hope you're having a lovely week!
Angela, I just took a sewing class at Joann using this pattern. First, the teacher says it is way oversized. I am normally a size 12/14 in regular clothing but she had me make a size S. I usually wear a large or x-large. The teacher had us, instead of doing set-in sleeves, she had us fit and pin the top of the sleeves onto the top armhole, and then we stitched the top of the sleeve. Then we sewed the side seam and the sleeves. This avoided set-in sleeves. I think they are called inset sleeves? I am a really new sewist so I may not be explaining it very well. This pattern would make a really cute sleeveless duster. I made my sweater with a sweater knit from Joan. It was what the teacher suggested and I love it. Mine is also gray in color. I'm wearing it to work tomorrow.
Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’m glad it wasn’t just me. 😂 I’m not familiar with the sleeve technique you described but I’m intrigued and will look into it. I’m so happy yours turned out well in the end. 😊 Hope you have a great week!
As others have said, definitely shorten your shoulder seam. I have this pattern and it is supposed to be flowy and a bit oversized, but I think your shoulder on this one is quite a bit too long. You could either use the smaller size armhole and sleeve to deal with the other issues you mentioned or just raise the armhole and use a smaller sleeve size. Measure the seam lines of your armhole front and back and the sleeve cap seam lines to make sure one fits with the other. It's gonna be cute when you are finished!
Thank you for this! It makes sense. I think I'm going to raise the armhole first and go from there. If I still want the sleeves, I'll adjust them to fit. I appreciate the info so much ❤️
Hi Angela! I have that pattern and made it years ago. My suggestion is to shorten the armhole. Pamela's Patterns on UA-cam has a short tutorial on How to Shorten an Armhole. Check it out...I think it will be helpful. The color of fabric you chose is lovely on you.😊
Hi Theresa! I will check out Pamela's video. I appreciate the tip and the sweet comment! ❤️
It looks a bit big overall and you could probably go down a size. I would make this one into a sleeveless vest. I have a RTW one that I actually wear a lot over long sleeve tops. Good luck with it either way.❤
Thank you! I think that's the route I'm going to go and I'll keep you posted! Have a great weekend!
I do think you need a narrow shoulder ajustment or a smaller size around the shoulder and upper bodice. I think lifting pins and needles has a video to show how to do those! Also there is a pattern maker that does some videos about fitting on the shoulder and upper arm. Your top is bunching allot over the long sleeve short , which I think is pushing the fabric upwards giving you more range of movement but without the long sleeve under, it will hang allot under your arm and limit movement. so getting the shoulder properly placed and less fabric falling in the space between arm and chest should give better range. I would using basting stitches to sew up the side seams until it feels better and also trim down the shoulder width - use the shirt you are wearing as a pattern maybe! ( looking at the side without a sleeve, it is hanging allot as a drop shoulder instead of inset sleeve which should have max the seam allowance width past your shoulder bone), I have redone allot of tops to get my shoulders right, my biggest issue in fitting!
I tend to agree with all of this and I appreciate your insightful comment. I might just make this one sleeveless since the fabric is so nice and I don't want to risk mucking it all up. Then, I might make this pattern again with a cheaper knit to get the fit figured out. Thanks so much!
I totally agree with everything you said!
The armhole looks like it is to big and I agree with some of the comments, it might help if you size down and make the back smaller or give it a seam down the back.
Thanks so much, Katinka! I hadn't thought about a seam down the back I may do that along with the armhole adjustments.
