We have an extra long rope especially for if we have to go up wide locks on our own , which reaches around a bollard and back to the steerer. Having said that I hated Chemistry lock too, bounced us too. And we open the paddle only on the side we've the rope on, theoretically the water should come in, bounce of far wall and hold you into the side. Note...theoretically 😂. I hope you remembered your RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) and your ankle is better now.

To hold a boat on a line you need to take a turn around the bollard. A bit of (carefully controlled) friction makes all the difference.
