As a Cestrian I am pleased to see this colourised. My old dad was born by foregate st in 1926 and the park was his playground as a child. When he was 90 he still went down to the groves to sit in the sun most days. Thanks for the upload.
Nearly 100 years on and they are still debating about excavation of the amphitheater because of a building built around the time of this film!! How frustrating, it’s my city and that of my fathers and grandfathers but we take it for granted until it’s too late and gone, please excavate the amphitheater and put Chester back on the map for the best of reasons. Great film, thanks for posting it.
Fantastic - thank you! Love the quote “A city so old that antiquity is taken for granted. Shopkeepers seem to think nothing of supporting their shelves on a Roman column.”
Lots of bars along the canal and properties n outdoor drinkers in the evenings during the summer. The noise of all the chatter is deafening. pov. @@westaussie965
The astonishing thing is almost a century on virtually everything filmed in 1931 is still here, thanks to Listed Building legislation- and the fact it was not a target for the Luftwaffe in WW2. For this reason it was the HQ of western command in what is now the Queens Park campus of the university. What no one ever seems to recognise is that the city is the best place in the world to see arts and craft architecture.
A touching tribute to our city. Being so close to it all my life, I often forget or lose perspective on its uniqueness and splendour. As a young woman I would shop on hot summer's afternoons, then retreat to the cool cloisters of the cathedral for relaxation. Would have been lovely to see the river as a working, busy fishing spot. I get the feeling the half of ampitheatre we now have on show had yet to be unearthed at the point the film was made. Lovely that the city remains largely unchanged almost a century on.
Sad that one of the richest men in the country and still is, couldn’t maintain that mansion and it was demolished and replaced by an ugly modern mansion.
5:00 What's that shelter above the Roman shrine of Minerva? It isn't there now. Interesting that they emphasise King Edgar, the Anglo Saxon. He had his semi-mythical crowning, nearby, on the River Dee.
I live here and was born here, and I just lost my MIND pointing out all the places I go daily. Most of it hasn't changed. How gorgeous.
I’m proud to say that I was born & raised in Chester, a beautiful city and this presentation shows it’s former glory. Deva, Deva, gaudeamus👍

Many of the buildings that make up its familiar landscape are listed, so it's more or less unmolested.
A priceless historical document of this wonderful town - one of my favourites. Very tastefully colourised, and tremendouslly nostalgic

Very true
This is a wonderful video. Thank you for posting. It's fabulous to see this old footage.
I miss Chester. I spent a good part of my childhood growing up in Boughton Heath in the 60/70s.
It's very much the same really.

poor things, just starting years of the Depression, then years of World War 2
What a treat.Thank you.
Brilliant footage not seen this clip before.
My family holds the record for the most salmon and trout in one net still to this day a Buckley from hand-bridge
How wonderful to see this and the narrators accent too. These are fascinating to watch .
Not much has changed. love going to Chester and down to the river.
Not sure what's more depressing, that i'm not alive there or how it looks today
What a great video this is

Never been prouder to be Cestrian
Amazing
That was great 👍
The city of balconies!
Been telling that tale about Harold for years...no one believes me.
I'm afraid the tale is just a tale. That Anchorite Cell was built in 1363
We've ruined ourselves forever.

I walked past there in the 80s for school and it wasn't there then either.
Seriously. Why is this video using the American spelling of colourised?
Who cares??
Well, I do!
@@TheGambino007yup people like you just give up our culture then when you hit 60’whine about’i remember when’.
This video was colorized in the USA 🇺🇸
What's that about King Harold not dying at Hastings???
What did they fight for?
And today the council have made it a circus.
Before they trashed it in the 60s and demolished Newtown
After all that, where is the Cheshire Cat?
it's beside the canal near Christleton lol.
It a shit hole not like 70 a nd 80 lived all my life
great piece of history
Amazing
