My recommendation as a Saga veteran is Emilia her story is simple and can be progressed pretty simply. The downside to her is only Emilia, Annie and Liza can learn rune magic and arcane magic characters can't be recruited until rune is finished. I started with Asellus though, and Blue is indeed a good starting character but his endgame is wow.
Same. SaGa had the misfortune of playing second fiddle to Final Fantasy for so long, I am absolutely thrilled that the series is finally getting this much-deserved attention!
I pre-ordered I was so excited. I always LOVED this game, but the improved graphics (and better lighting) make finding your way around SO MUCH EASIER. Also, the indicators, OMG the indicators!
@@AlexDuck yes! The quality of life changes makes this game even better! And I love that they retained the gold & junk shop glitches to make leveling easier
When I bought this game for the PlayStation 1, I also purchased the strategy guide, which helped tremendously. The remastered version gives hints as to what you should do next. After playing each character several times, my favorites are T260G, Asellus, and Red.
Ha, I picked Lute first, followed the Story directions, ended up at his final boss unleveled, ungeared, and with only Capt. Hamilton as a party member. Needless to say, I had the totally wrong preconception as for how to play this game, lolol. But I restarted, ran around the world picking up party members and such, and he ended up being my first clear. I like how each character has some kind of gimmick. Emelia has her costume changes, Red has Alkaiser, and so on. Lute... I guess his ability is being able to be taken out of the main battle party. Really suits his easygoing personality. Plus due to the NG+ feature to carry over stats and skills, and being recruitable by literally every protagonist, he ended up being my strongest Human.
Yeah, Lute's scenario is mostly just doing side quests then talking to Captain Hamilton to start the final mission. (Once you start the final mission to go to the final boss's base, you can't leave.)
I started with Blue but I don't think he's the best one to start because it's better to learn which of the magic choices are better since I think choosing 'correctly' makes your first run with him more manageable.
I understand your point and this may be the case, but I think that because he forces you to understand spells and affinity/gifts better he also makes all other scenarios easier to run, since much of the endgame resolves around quests related to it
I always used Blue for the final scenario, so once I beat his/all scenarios, I can use him for the main character to beat all the extra post game content on the Cygnus. ❤ Overdrive combo is OP. ❤
I remember playing this way back when. Had no idea about Battle Rating system. Which would explain enemies were OP. I only beaten Blue and T6( robot) Red: I was stuck on mission with Fuse( boss was Spider and then I had to sneak around in ship or it blows up) Asellius: Had no idea what was I supposed to do in the beginning. Riki: I got all the rings and had no idea where to go from there. Emelia: Was stuck on mission with Asellius and Rose. Enemies one shot me. Lute: No clue where the main storyline took place. Mostly been doing side quests Can’t wait to relive my memories once again and finally beat the other stories
The game is a lot more newcomer friendly with the remaster, in my opinion. Knowing for certain what some abilities and gear actually DO is quite helpful in itself.
Lute is only sidequests. You go to Owmi and talk to captain hamilton and that opens up the endgame. So as lute just grab All the people you want, start grabbing all the side quests. Grind until you are ready for a really tough final boss
Such nostalgia. I had so much fun playing this game in PS1 and was grateful that the first character I started with is Blue. He is a good starting point to learn and understand magic mastery before picking another character (my 2nd was Asellus).
Man, I hope and pray that Square-Enix gives us a full remake of this game with a similar engine as Romancing Saga Minstrel Song. This game is easily my favorite of the franchise .
To be honest, people keep saying that Red is the best story to start, but I actually feel like Red's story has some weird chokepoints from only having one party member for a long time. It's also one of the more obtuse ones when you open up free roaming. Emilia, the other common suggestion, suffers from feeling super incomplete until you finish a couple of other storylines (especially if you don't know there's 2 endings to the scenario). I actually feel like T260 is one of the better starting points, because Robots are REALLY good at grinding out a lot of battles quickly to level up human characters and monsters for other arcs (if you bother using New Game+). It's also one of the more interesting final bosses.
First time player of SaGa, long time player of Final Fantasy. This is very different from what I'm used to, and I'm so confused. I hit what I think are the Valkyrie sisters, and they seem unbeatable. I don't know where to go or what to do. I like the different style, but I feel like a fish out of water.
My first character in the game was Lute. That was a mistake. I considered returning the game, but when I read the manual and saw Emilia, I decided to give it another chance. I’m glad I did. From that day on, Emilia was always first and always will be.
Great video. In past when I played I started with T260G as it was my favourite character. After that Blue and Riki. Moved to Asellus but ended on her. Can't wait to play more when I buy it :P
I am in Asellus' quest right now, and I am happy with the additional scenes they have added (or rather, finally included) so far. It's also worth noting that now Asellus can recruit Dr. Nusakan! My favorite mystic!

agreed, I usually start with Emelia, but cause Blue obligates you to learn about elemental gift and the likes, it forces you to understand the spell system that can be used to make any other journey easier
I started with Lute in 1998 (or whatever year) and I started with Lute in 2021 - back in the original I did eventually beat all 7 stories, though. Lute should definitely come with a warning though!
If you do Blue, go Shadow, Rune, Time. That way you can do his Overdrive 8 hit super combo asap. (Cast Overdrive, cast Shadow Servant, do 5-6 moves (whatever you like), then finish his last action with Soul Rune. Then have someone use a Snake Oil on him, and now he can do 7-8 actions per every one of his turns)❤
Blue is the best. Any spell you learn Rogue learns the opposite... And if you die to Rogue you play as Rogue then on. Regardless of which you take all the spells of the other over, truly unique and unexpected.
just got it today on my library after a week of waiting the payment to process, came here bc I don't know who to pick. i've started this game two times before in the ps1 version but that version hasn't aged well at all. i'm so glad they did this remaster, i'm thrilled to thrown myself into it.
@@ScherBR my main problem is that she plateaus for a bit which can make her scenario a bit less fun just before things get really rolling. It’s always when I am hunting down the last of the runes. Blue is like playing with Gray in minstrel song, both of them forces you to master the game in order to advance or fail misserably and pick another character.
Blue is my favorite character and I tend to like mage classes. Starting with him back in the original ruined all the other characters for me as they just couldn’t get all the magic mastered like him. In the re-make I’m saving his story last and started with Amelia.
My favorite in the series. Over the years have played n ended all heroes atleast 30 times or more. Just finished all 7 heroes in remastered. The additional content they advertised is really not there. Arsellus "new content" takes 10mins top to do all 3 "events". Going to start final hero now fuse. Hope his new content good. I love the new plus feature carry over everything from hero to hero. Makes clearing all 7 heroes easy and fast. The removal of original 50000 gold cap a nice welcome. Next remastered i want is Chrono Cross. 😍😎
Fuse is hmmm an interesting addition to make amends to the game, I feel like they only added what was kinda already inside the game but not used, Fuse journey will be very interesting for you or veterans, at least the game is so much better now. An Hi5 on that Chrono Cross remaster!
I started with Riki as my first character, but I highly recommend people save him for last. His story feels like it is at the end after all other character's stories.
My favorite music piece is definitely t260 caballeros theme. Im glad this remastered included all the tracks in menu for free. That was thoughtful of team. 😎

Then, for some reason about 6 months later, I felt compelled by some unseen force to give the game another shot. This time, I picked Red and was blown away by how different his scenario was, and his cool transformation mechanics. After spending time with Red and his group, I quickly fell in love with the game and have enjoyed diving into it again once or twice a year since.
Blue is best choice, imo--can power up Rouge for most other games for future games. can grind up several mystics, humans, robots, monsters with ease. :)
@@ScherBR is what i was told to do as best newcomer advice from a SaGa fangroup in telegram. entire chat group spammed me with "Blue or Emelia! Blue can get almost everyone to train for their runs though."
playful counter-argument for picking Lute first: he's the best protagonist to introduce you to the Free Scenario system as a whole, to the overall tone of SaGa Frontier. having come back to SGF again and again over the years, and now enjoying the heck out of the remaster, the primary way I like to play is to fire up whichever protagonist I'm in the mood for that day and just run around fighting and growing the characters. and Lute lets you go everywhere from the start, recruit a diverse cast of lots of characters, and build them up for a super hard final boss. that's the heart and soul of SGF right there, if you ask me! :)
from my childhood I did in fact played with Lute many times, but I believe it's too much to take as a beginner without knowing a single thing about the game, still fun tough
Bruh, I made the same mistake. It's not to say that his story doesn't have a couple redeeming qualities in the overall narrative, but...ugh. It was painful enough that I couldn't deal with it my first time playing. Having now played all of the SaGa titles out there, I can say that Lute was clearly supposed to be like Gray from Romancing SaGa. He has the ability to go anywhere and do anything from the get-go, with only monster levels holding him back. The difference here is, Gray at least had a couple of decent companions with him, and you couldn't accidentally stumble into the last dungeon literally 10 minutes into the game. Maybe the freedom was supposed to make Lute be everyone's favorite character, but in my mind, that backfired horribly, just like their intentions with Kimahri in FFX.
The trailer tried to warn you "his only redeeming quality is his honesty." He's also the dark souls start lol, you get a pocket knife and a pat on the back wishing you luck.
I think they wanted the same feeling as the Romancing SaGa originals on Lute but since there's a more complex world and travel system it became hard to understand what you could do with the world, specially since many quests are related to magic gifts
So they added Fuse's whole storyline, and they added additional content for Asellus, but couldn't be bothered to give Lute *ANYTHING*? LOL. They really hate my man Lute.
@bobby Tran Blue is mage, Red is knight/superman. Just pick what you prefer. This is like an MMORPG where the character you pick will have their own quest line, but they all share the same world and side quests.
im so tempted to get the game.. maybe ill wait for discount.. and Riki tho,, you got trolled by the community.. lol im looking forward to see playtrough..
@@Hachimitsu1151 Thunder = Triceratops or Sphinx form. That was the best I could ever get. Heck, still the best I have ever gotten. But he is a beast at least.
Emilia or Blue are the best characters to start with. Red has the most linear story. T260G, Riki and Ausellus are there to teach you how to play their respective types.
@@louisdellalucca8969 If you REALLY want to finish fast, consider finding Emelia in the Baccarat Gold Card quest and grinding the biolab until you can learn the 4 specific moves required for DSC. DSC trivializes most bosses. To clarify, DSC requires you to equip Sliding, Collapse, Giant Swing, and Suplex at the same time. It shows up in your combat menu if you did it right. DSC does up to around 25k damage. Although usually it just does 10k.
You should definitely check it out. I highly recommend SaGa Frontier 2 (don't worry, like Final Fantasy, there is no actual chronological relation, so you can play them out of order) which is one of the most stunning RPGs on the PS1 in my opinion. I also recommend the Romancing SaGa games, specifically RS1's remake on PS2 if you can find it. It really defines what a remake should be, in my opinion.
I went with Riki as i like playing as monster races usually. He's not that hard to use. Once you manage to turn him into a Chimera (can do that as soon as you can absorb Dragon Whelps) he turns into a powerhouse. I think he's a bad start though because his story is mostly forgettable and a couple of the mandatory dungeons in it are fucking terrible.
@@ScherBR Its my first time playing this since i played the original in like 6th grade :p. Its just a lot of trial and error to figure the good monster forms. Also his story give you Gen and Fei On for free super early who can carry damage super hard and eventually 2 good healing Mystics (Dr.Nusakan and Mesarthim). Even Mei Ling eventually gets really good as either a caster or gunner by the end of the story (did take forever for her to start learning good gun skills though.) So even if you struggle using him, the rest of his cast makes up for it. Idk just my experience with him, like even if you mess around with his forms you can get by. His main low points for me are really Mosperiburg's dungeon who's a gimick festival and the overall weak story.
@@briankenney9528 she did fine by the end, just took her a while to take off. Seems common with Gun users, same thing happened with Roufas and Doll in my Red playthrough. Weak at first then Doll learned fairly quicky Quickshot and became my combo enabler while Roufas went from ok to an absolute monster whenever he learned the Dual Wield gun skill.

I think they wanted the same feeling as the Romancing SaGa originals on Lute but since there's a more complex world and travel system it became hard to understand what you could do with the world, specially since many quests are related to magic gifts
I pick Blue for my 1st adventure every time, I replay this series
I usually start with Emelia, but I know why Blue is so popular
@@ScherBR I'm starting with Emelia. :) Are you planning on playing Nier: Replicant next week?
I start with Red because he meets and can recruit nearly every other protagonist
So they added Fuse's whole storyline, and they added additional content for Asellus, but couldn't be bothered to give Lute *ANYTHING*? LOL. They really hate my man Lute.
I'm not sure if his journey is exactly the same, I'm yet to play with him
@@ScherBR I have and it is exactly the same as original
@bobby Tran Blue is mage, Red is knight/superman. Just pick what you prefer. This is like an MMORPG where the character you pick will have their own quest line, but they all share the same world and side quests.
Thanks for the guide!
I didn't see Fuse on there D:
...Don't tell me we've to unlock him with done all character scenario first.
I think you need to play through at least one scenario first
yup, finish at least one
Nice, now I know. Can't wait to try his scenario, since it's the only one I've never played or beat. ❤
This is welcome for my Birthday. 🤗
Mine is close!
Why don't Google play store have it
@@ScherBR how soon bro?
23th this month
im so tempted to get the game.. maybe ill wait for discount..
and Riki tho,, you got trolled by the community.. lol
im looking forward to see playtrough..
Riki is better than I expected this run xD I'm sure this game will receive discounts, it got released with a cheaper price too
@@ScherBR i think so... lets see then...
Asellus. All mystic squad.
those that already know how to play with mystics will have fun
@@ScherBR indeed. Monster and mystic are little bit tricky. I still remember without guide, i surely had no idea about how to play them. Lol
@@Hachimitsu1151 Thunder = Triceratops or Sphinx form. That was the best I could ever get. Heck, still the best I have ever gotten. But he is a beast at least.
@@AlexDuck try to build mariche. If remember correctly, u can get this form by gather gaze skills
Emilia or Blue are the best characters to start with. Red has the most linear story. T260G, Riki and Ausellus are there to teach you how to play their respective types.
Picked Asellus, big fuckin mistake. Its a whole bunch of "where the fuck do I go?" And checked places hoping bosses attack you.
She is good once you star enjoying the world building and game system, but as a first... Agreed
I believe Red is the easiest and the one to start, whereas Blue and lesbian chick are the most difficult.
I wanted to get Lute out of the way. I STILL haven't finished him yet. The last boss just. Won't. DIE!!!!
yeah you may need to find better equips and learn more skills...
@@ScherBR yeah, im doing more sidequests, trying to take out the Earth Dragon. The Shield and Bazooka are really handy
Oo I'm excited to see this series! Im not familiar with this franchise at all
It's a nice game, but can be a little confusing
It can be confusing but there are many videos to help out. Its a game that stays with you for many reasons. Especially music.
Just choose whoever you want it's just the same story
Lute's story is basically unchanged btw.
what do you mean basically? have you noticed any difference?
Only difference I've noticed is ability name changes and graphics updates for lute.
T260G
Powafu Robot!
robo gang flair up
I went with Riki as i like playing as monster races usually.
He's not hard to use if you're a veteran, but the whole method of acquiring the best forms can only be done by doing research...
I wouldnt take too much time building up mei ling on riki's scenario
@@briankenney9528 she did fine by the end, just took her a while to take off. Seems common with Gun users, same thing happened with Roufas and Doll in my Red playthrough. Weak at first then Doll learned fairly quicky Quickshot and became my combo enabler while Roufas went from ok to an absolute monster whenever he learned the Dual Wield gun skill.
@@jonathanabgrall6075 thats not what i meant. Shes a perfectly useable character. Just dont put too much time in her on Riki's scenario
I wonder if junk scrap glitch still working or not
Not working
good to know
@@true_gamer39
It actually still works.
thanks, you're the second to confirm @badmaaash
still working.
i started with Asselus lol :)
she is very strong!
@@ScherBR She can also now recruit Dr. Nusakan as part of her new story elements, if you didn't know or if you care (like I do)!
Riki's mission would be fine if monsters didnt suck
They can actually get pretty strong but humans are way easier to use
@@ScherBR yeah but building monsters up feels completely random. I had riki go from wyvern to a rocky with one move
The Tanzer at the beginning is extremely hard too I used to start with Riki as a kid and idk why cause I think its the hardest character at the start because of the Tanzer. But after that it felt easier
Why is it not on Google play store its the 15th
maybe some synch, but it should be by now
@@ScherBR still not on there
@@ScherBR i want it damn
if it doesn't appear it may be that your mobile device may not be compatible, try to search using google
Do you guys know if there's a physical copy? All I'm seeing are digital
Google play store don't have it why
I think physical release only on switch
Playasia. It's japanese, but the switch is region-free and has english options.
I wouldn't recommend asellus as the first character due to the random nature of her story.
Same, she was my 3rd or 4th I guess
Fuse cant be the first protagonist so he shouldn't be on the thumbnail lol.
but all official art has him! xD
