I adore the direction the Square Enix took in this remaster! Upscaled backgrounds should have been integrated into all of their games from the beginning, sadly mods are the only option for doing that for most of their older games, and that option is only available on PC. I can understand why some purists wouldn't like the redrawn sprites, but the new sprites just looks so clean to me. Because of how good this looks I have high hope for possible future remasters of old games by Square Enix. It's too bad that it can't go higher than 1080p, but that also makes sense seeing as how they only upscaled this game and redrew the sprites to make them all 1080p, so going higher than that base resolution would have no point; and the game already looks really clean.

This is making me want some remasters for Final Fantasy 1 through 6 on the Switch sooooo badly! Like if nothing else, port the GBA versions or something.
Couldn't agree more on some of these word changes. The biggest one being the RB3 core fight change from Genocide Heart to Heretic Heart. Made no sense, this machine destroys regions entirely so it is in fact doing what the word entails. It's not being thrown out as some edgy boss name. Heretic sounds more religious which doesn't fit the esthetic of RB3. On another note, the remaster has made me confused on the changing of certain skill moves given the more simplistic names they used in the PS1 version. Been comparing them in my Brady Games guide throughout these playthroughs.
@@iNsOmNiAcAnDrEw It's still better than the Asellus stuff. Mystics are basically vampires akin to Jojo and the like, but the comparisons some are stretching for are just silly.

I played the original like 8 years ago, and now after the remake, whenever I look at footage from the PS1 game I think to myself "did this reaaally look THAT pixellated?". But whatever, I am very happy with the remaster and the way they handled the graphics, the redrawn sprites are incredibly faithful to the original, not to mention the bonus content, being able to transfer money, items, etc... to a NG+. Only thing I could ask for at this moment is that they truly finished everything that was envisioned (Like the mysterious room in Luminous) but it's just nitpicks at this point. Sad that the FFCC remaster was sorta wasted to appeal to mobile phones.
I remember about the game since from the FFVII Manual. So these backgrounds weren't based from the original Source material? I'm still impressed that they were redesigned for 16:9 Widescreen.
They most likely lost the source material at some point. If it happened to KH1 it definitely could have happened to this. It seems AI upscaling is kind of saving the day for these older games.
@@OtenP_ Lol both are great but yeah I think between those two 6 should get remastered; that game was one of the last great 'classic' mainline FF before the whole 3D move. Didn't 9 already get a remastered version of sorts recently?
Yeah the PC version is atrocious, the menus and font look like generic android crap and remastering the 3D models while leaving the backgrounds untouched might have been cheaper for Square but it makes the game look awful for any new players.
Actually, and to my surprise, you can instantly kill Jotnar. I used Petrifying Gaze on it once and was flabbergasted when it actually worked. In your video, do note that the Death missed instead of having no effect.
Great video it is a shame that Fuse scenario still was not as intended tho even in the remaster. also 1 major gripe I have with the remaster my opinion may not be a popular one but monsters I don't think it is a good idea the change was made where you can swap out any ability you want. As someone who knows how monsters work in this game and how to obtain each transformation if a new player discards the wrong skill instead of the keep 1 skill at the bottom of the list that automatically goes it can screw outta some form easier not only that but arranging the skills a certain way in the menu and skill types effect transformation I dunno maybe I am being a bit nitpicky but they should have kept the default way leave a skill at the very bottom of the list and discard it
I think maybe they didn't tell us more about monster transformation, if that's the case I see where you're coming from with your concern, but they could have just added more information to players about it, and they still could I guess with some sort of free update. Many times, it's such a hassle to visit the ability list from the menu.
Looks great. I’m confident Square is saving the best for last with the Chrono collection & Final Fantasy 16-bit era (at least as a single item.) All popular FF’s will probably see a 7R revision at some point.
*Shudders* God I hope not. 7R is awful, I'd be much happier if they just upgraded to modern graphics and added some bits and bobs. Leave that 7R crap to the birds.
I do believe the remastered version is the definitive version of the game, and it made a lot of good quality of life adjustments that make the game more fun and less confusing... But I don't think they made enough quality of life changes. The Mech's story is still as cryptic as ever. They never tell you to find the computer in Koorong, and never tell you that you need to talk to the doctor with the normal default chassis. I also find it odd that they gave three of the Rune spells different symbols, but didn't bother to change the other five.
Just a dream but imagine that being the hook for saga frontier part 2 where they develop the story, gives nowdays 3d work, merge every character story in a final adventure and close most gaps and doors left open in the story.... Yeah, I know, just a dream =X.
The painted look is most likely from the XBR shader most remasters and emulators as a whole use. Not complaining though I love the XBR shader for all 2d based games.

I have this on original playstation and for whatever reason just never got into it. Maybe 10 hours in I just lost interest. Gotta admit, this makes me almost want to try it out again.
Screw the new graphics. They look way too shiny and smeared. I wish there was an option for 1:1 pixel upscale, with no interpolation smoothing crap. Everything else is an improvement over the PS1 version, tho.

Hey now that Bug Fables is getting a physical release at Limited Run Games, can you compare the PS4 and Switch versions of those games? I and many others want to make the best decision on which I buy.
Remastered all the way, that speed option plus extra character story and scenario and they kept the junk yard and gold bar cheats in but they had me at 3 levels of speed so all your special moves go so fast on screen keeps gameplay fast paced. oh yeah not to mention the new game + carry over your data from previous playthrough's cherry on the cake.
speed option helps with Asellus though it's easy to get lost in such a big area with that chateau. Fuse needs you to beat the game with someone which kinda sucks, and your mileage may vary based on who you choose (Red superhero Alkaiser was always fun).
@@MrVariant I think you have to beat the game with Blue before you play Fuse's scenario, I heard if you do you could recruit Blue in Fuses data and if you don't you cannot recruit Blue unless Blue's data is completed before. Just do not know if this is true I heard some article say it.
@@MrVariant If you end up doing it come back here so I can thank you for your sacrifice if not do not worry, it is only a game, in that case fare thee well my friend.

I was waiting for a psn release, but unfortunately, the redrawn pixel-less graphics are way out of character in my opinion. Like eww it’s all high res.
I have mixed feelings about it... The main characters I didn't need to see redesigned, but some of the backgrounds and NPCs look really nice. The main thing that bothers me though is that they covered up Mesarthim. That was some really unnecessary censorship since her original costume has star pasties. @@betacrest10 I've been trying to determine what platform to get this on. It's a toss up between PS4 and STEAM, but leaning more towards STEAM
I got the Switch Remaster for my birthday last week. Still have yet to play it because I am waiting for a special day off to sample it and the other games I got as gifts; Cuphead, Star Ocean Second Story R, Octopath Traveler, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Octopath Traveler II, Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Unravel 2 and Saturday Morning RPG.
playing the remaster and having a great time
The font and dialogue boxes seem out of place, but other than that the visuals look pretty great. Miles beyond what SQEX did for FF5 and 6
Why would they not call T260 "it"? ...
Heaven and hell was my best technique. I think I still have the original game somewhere
Sadly they renamed it Heaven and Earth. I still call it Heaven and Hell though.
personally i think the non-remaster version looks nicer
honestly, this is a really confy game to play on the PsP. Thought with the PS store closing might not be a possiblity. The stretch aspect ratio of the PSP fits this game really well.
Switch for me
Visually this remaster look really good. Way better than the blur filter SE used on the FF7,8&9 Remasters.
Your all ports reviewed vids are blessings
I still come to youtube to play songs from the soundtrack. I played and beat most of the characters stories. All I had left was to finish Asellus' story, then I was going to Lute's story... finally Riki's story. I beat the other characters stories,, but I never finished the entire game tho.
Not only was this remaster on point, your review was too!
So happy to see this nostalgic masterpiece remastered! We can only hope that Sony eventually pushes for a remaster for legend of dragoon! Of which I hope you’ll also review 🤘
It's my first touch with SaGa games and It's brilliant!
This is making me want some remasters for Final Fantasy 1 through 6 on the Switch sooooo badly! Like if nothing else, port the GBA versions or something.
Only catch is that there wasn't a GBA version of FF3...just 1&2 and 4-6.
@@DragoonMS I mean..... so be it then. Lol
The PSP Remakes on 1,2,3 and 4 are really beautiful.
I see AustinSV video, I click asap
Really?
Pink Tiger changes Emelia's talent tree, I checked it myself.
Thumbs up for using the word Completer
Couldn't agree more on some of these word changes. The biggest one being the RB3 core fight change from Genocide Heart to Heretic Heart. Made no sense, this machine destroys regions entirely so it is in fact doing what the word entails. It's not being thrown out as some edgy boss name. Heretic sounds more religious which doesn't fit the esthetic of RB3.
On another note, the remaster has made me confused on the changing of certain skill moves given the more simplistic names they used in the PS1 version. Been comparing them in my Brady Games guide throughout these playthroughs.
I agree but it's not as bad as giving the mech a plural pronoun!
@@iNsOmNiAcAnDrEw It's still better than the Asellus stuff. Mystics are basically vampires akin to Jojo and the like, but the comparisons some are stretching for are just silly.
@@rugalb98 Who is JoJo?
@@mejercit Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The Mystics act like DIO or the Pillar Men with their abilities (and the fact they don't follow the Vampire tropes).
I prefer the old spites......the new ones look fugly to me
I remember about the game since from the FFVII Manual.
Would love to see square give this kind of love to FF9
Screw 9 more like 6 definitely needs a real remaster
@@OtenP_ Lol both are great but yeah I think between those two 6 should get remastered; that game was one of the last great 'classic' mainline FF before the whole 3D move. Didn't 9 already get a remastered version of sorts recently?
@@xil3ntkha0s yeah 9 has good mods especially for PC but even on consoles it looks okay, but 6 definitely needs more love
Yeah the PC version is atrocious, the menus and font look like generic android crap and remastering the 3D models while leaving the backgrounds untouched might have been cheaper for Square but it makes the game look awful for any new players.
I absolutely love the original pixel art gives it a retro feel to it.
Actually, and to my surprise, you can instantly kill Jotnar.
I used Petrifying Gaze on it once and was flabbergasted when it actually worked.
In your video, do note that the Death missed instead of having no effect.
the remaster visuals is how i remembered it in 1998 lol
funny, because old players hate new remaster visuals
i actually liked fuse content especially when you finish blues story
Many times, it's such a hassle to visit the ability list from the menu.
pixel style on a CRT looks way better
Psx of course. For original pixel art sake.
@@palladiamorsdeus Ah, man. It looks and seems to play incredibly (I’ve yet to play it at all). What is it about 7R that you don’t like?
@@palladiamorsdeus 7 remake is amazing to me.
Good video as always homie 👍
I do believe the remastered version is the definitive version of the game, and it made a lot of good quality of life adjustments that make the game more fun and less confusing... But I don't think they made enough quality of life changes. The Mech's story is still as cryptic as ever. They never tell you to find the computer in Koorong, and never tell you that you need to talk to the doctor with the normal default chassis.
I also find it odd that they gave three of the Rune spells different symbols, but didn't bother to change the other five.
As a UI nerd this remaster is a massive no just because of the horrendous mobile game UI they forced onto the remaster on all platforms.
Just a dream but imagine that being the hook for saga frontier part 2 where they develop the story, gives nowdays 3d work, merge every character story in a final adventure and close most gaps and doors left open in the story.... Yeah, I know, just a dream =X.
If only we can have Xenogears remaster.
If only. With the rushed content from 2nd disc.
Only if monolith soft s involved please
I prefer the old sprites over the new character models, but other than that this version seems better.
Definitely getting this
This game was so much fun. Very unique. However, somewhat plot is confusing.
Better than the Star Ocean: First Departure remaster at least.
thanks ! great video!
The painted look is most likely from the XBR shader most remasters and emulators as a whole use. Not complaining though I love the XBR shader for all 2d based games.
This is a Unity port however.
I miss the custom colors for the dialogue text of each character.
0:39 "I'm ready to kick some *blackX butt* " LOL
So sad about Lute still not having a story...
I was hoping Gen would get his own storyline. Maybe it could explain the drinking and why Wakatu is the way it is now.
@@MarkLLawrence trinity destroyed Wakatu. he drinks to block out the memories.
@@matsujonen yeah but get more detail on what happened and why he knows how to get the Saber Card. Gen fighting against Trinity and saving those he could would be a great story.
@@MarkLLawrence he knows about the saber card because he's from Wakatu. He is also probably the only survivor. It you recruit him during Lutes quest it explains a bit more
@@matsujonen You learn more playing Fuse's Lute case file.
So they're finally using AI upscaling for the BG s , You think they would go back and implement that on their previous FF ports? Cuz FFVIII and IX would totally look amazing
How did I not know about this. Holy shit...take my money!
I have this on original playstation and for whatever reason just never got into it. Maybe 10 hours in I just lost interest. Gotta admit, this makes me almost want to try it out again.
I usually stick with the original and dont like the new android remasters however for saga frontier those look really nice!
Screw the new graphics. They look way too shiny and smeared. I wish there was an option for 1:1 pixel upscale, with no interpolation smoothing crap.
Everything else is an improvement over the PS1 version, tho.
It's quite weird that Square Enix put a LOT more love in this remaster than Final Fantasy VIII Remaster lol. But I will not complain, I love "niche" Square games and I can't wait for Legend of Mana. ;)
Which version? For me the originals with an emulator.
thief
@@valentds Don't be a dumb passive and lobotomized consumer.
I think im getting more stubborn the older i get. I don't like the redesign of the sprites or the new localization. It was the same for me with the Secret of Mana remaster.
Imagine actually believing that pixel art is bad
old text way better
I've completed the remastered and just found this video. Looks like I missed some Asellus stuff.
This was great remaster
You can really tell that Kawazu is involved with the production of these SaGa remaster/remakes. They're so much nicer than some of the ones for Final Fantasy that were clearly cranked out only to make money by people who probably weren't even involved with the original development.
I just got this on sale it's fantastic The only thing that bugs me is the robot like him being referred to as it or him was fine they them just seem stupid like he's multiple robots it's just what makes sense if it's just a thing that has no gender it's it's a thing it's a combat unit they are combat unit sounds weird lol it's like human speeches being forced to change or something
Should I buy for switch or galaxy tablet? Still can't decide...I usually only use switch in handheld mode. Tablet would be larger screen, but switch would have the controller option.
Switch for sure!
I really hate that soft effect on these beautiful sprites.
I know they did not have infinite budget, but I wish the BGs were hand repainted as well.
Yeah, some of the battle backgrounds look really blurry. I noticed that when grinding in the Bio Lab.
Shame we never got the original saga frontier here in Europe, I have saga frontier 2 for the original playstation, I really hope that gets a remake.
Well you can play it now, all switch games are region free
@@Alucard_FahrenheitTepes Yeah that's confusing as if you lose as blue and beat it as rouge, I wonder what would happen.
@@MrVariant If you end up doing it come back here so I can thank you for your sacrifice if not do not worry, it is only a game, in that case fare thee well my friend.
@@Alucard_FahrenheitTepes no worries you can check guides I'm sure or fuse playthroughs. I know he tails everyone after beating the game with them.
The remaster was much better than the original and I LOVED the original.
I played the Mobile game, and I love the musics.
Should I play the PC games as well??
Still waiting for a Xenogears remaster. Prices for discs on Ebay are crazy....
If have the PS3, PSP or Vita, head to PSN and buy Xenogear for $10.
Never played a Saga game. Should I play it?
Absolutely. All the SaGa games are pretty good, up until Unlimited SaGa, you should avoid that game and anything released after that except SaGa Frontier Remastered, and Romancing SaGa Re:Universe.
@Dr. Velious
I disagree. Romancing SaGa remake, and SaGa Scarlet Grace are both great.
@WPFreeinternet I get the dates on Minstrel Song and Unlimited mixed up, my bad, Minstrel Song is good, but imo Scarlett Grace's models look ugly. I don't know how the gameplay is though.
Just this one.
Colorful, bright, fun humor, expanisve maps and characters, and mostly, interwoven story.
Admittedly its turn based RPG and lots of exploring beautiful maps, reading dialogue and getting into the strange scifi/magic world might take some time to get into, but will be well worth your time.
There was already a quicksave function in the OG game tho
I think the remaster is a lot better.
Now I feel old.
It's exactly the kind of behavior I'm tired of seeing from Japanese game companies, caving to perceived censorship demands from Western leftist extremists. Ugly stuff.
