At 70, I had a massive Heart Attack with full code Arrest while riding two months ago. After 40+ years of riding. I am lucky to have had people stop to render aid and start CPR. I enjoyed every ride! Well a bypass and an extensive Aorta repair, and I am looking forward to riding again some day. Cycling improved my quality of life beyond explanation. I could die; I could ride till I'm 100. I survived 3 years of Chemo, I will be working to survive this. Cycling gives me a stronger body and a stronger spirit.
Well said as always. I started cycling again, just pre Covid. I’ve shed 16kg, now at 60kg and VO2 Max through training currently up to 50. I’m 68 soon and still motivated to keep building my fitness. Don’t think you’ve left it too late. Just go for it.
Great video, very well described. Nobody wants to hear the truth, but you have to be honest with yourself. Once you get your head in the right place, everything becomes easier. You will fail at some stuff, but that's better than not trying. You'll also learn from failure, you'll not improve without trying. Problem is we live in a time where we want instant results, which is impossible...
67, VO2 Max=50, Fitness Age=56, top 5% for my age and gender (M) - according to Garmin! I feel great, eat healthily and have moved over more to cycling from running due to joint issues. I want to live long, but more importantly, well.
Love this! I get out on my bike quite a lot. But need motivation to learn a new skill to get me into better paying work. So I applied your philosophy to that. Love the presentation style, perfectly done.
Just found this channel. Good straight talking that makes perfect sense. I’ve subscribed and will be following any advice and motivational shite as applicable. 😁😁😁
The 4th “F” is fibrillation, as in atrial fibrillation. If you’re an endurance athlete, you have an elevated chance of AF. I had AF during the 2018 Tour Aotearoa, the 3,000 km ride the length of New Zealand. Just saying, based on personal experience.
@@jamieokane989 You have my sympathy; it’s a frightening reminder of our own mortality (and a real pisser that you can’t do the things you used to, or at least not at the same pace).
@@jamieokane989 I’ve just stopped trying to push myself so hard. I had AF during the Tour Aotearoa (look it up) and really thought that I was dying. That’s been quite an incentive to back off. I still ride quite a lot.
Do NOT for one second think cycling makes you heart attack safe! 53, been riding and racing since a teen and had 3 heart attacks past 10 years until figuring it out. My V02 level is probably why I never died but ultimately it came down to taking and staying on my bp and cholesterol meds. Take your meds. Btw, I like your Oltre, I have the RC.
Gradually warm up. I have angin, but I'm more likely to have an attack if I'm having an argument with someone. I.E stress ! But I've reduced my max Heart Rate while cycling from 175 to 160... just in case. In my 60s.
I was running but not often enough and over last few years I goit worse at it, my vo2 max wasn't good and my fitness age was 10 years older than my real age, so I upped my game a little, run 2 or 3 times a week depending on if I cycle or not and my vo2 maz went up 15% (so far) and my fitness age dropped by 20 years, but not, I have that habit, and more focus, I'm not stopping,
I’ve got mild calcification in my LAD. Believe it or not, ultra endurance athletes tend to have calcification. Will I be taking statins? Hell no! I’m 52 and my recent CPET measured my vo2 max at 50 and max HR 184 bpm
Not every medical issue is due to inactivity. I was a regular on my bike and it actually highlighted an issue for me in as much as I all of a sudden could barely ride up hill. What I thought was a respiratory issue was in fact heart related and heart attack is not the only issue you can have. Got that sorted and got hit by one of the big issues in metabolic syndrome. Two and a half years of gout. But guess what, lemons to lemonade, you should see how fit you get doing 1.5k on crutches. Let your exercise tell you about your body and listen.
I know about 6 very fit cyclists, two dropped dead out riding, and an acquaintance that had ohs to repair his mitrial valve. I just got out of my ohs for new Aeortic valve and a graft. I have to agree that cycling can sometimes bring the problems to the surface.
Yes you are right about Vomax. There are 3 indicators for longevity. Grip strength, Vo2max and balance. Get these 3 right and you should be ok. Just to be safe i add omega 3 😉. Nice video👌
@thetriumphsprint I've lost over 10% bodyfat after one ride before. I've had very different readings for bodyfat morning to morning while being roughly the same weight in consecutive days. I'd trust one of those wind measuring power meters over one of these scales. *I've never owned one of these things. They were always my parents or a roommates scale so I've had regular use of multiple types. All have been laughably bad and not consistent. Kinda reminds me of my Whoop I got rid of. That may actually be worse than these scales.
Pretty sure the lack of jabs made no difference. You are just lucky not to be dead of Covid like the 7 million who have died. Oh and check out all the kiddies seriously ill or dead because their parents skipped childhood vaccinations'

70 here and feeling strong. Moderation is key…and listening to what your body is telling you from day to day. Have a rad day all 👍

What scale do you recommend or use for measuring muscle and fat?
Honestly. For me. Day 4 out of surgery. Feeling great, but fanny score is about 0.
It feels more like me new bike is actively trying to kill me... 😂
Ive only two days per week to train on my bike . Whats the best way to go about it? Im thinking short high intensity ?

Those scales don't measure fat and muscle, it a calculate number
Those scales are terribly innacurate for anything but weight.
They're not great but as long as they are consistent then they are usable. If you see BF come down and BM go up then they are a useful tool.
