- It may be declining, but in my opinion there hasn't been as good a time as now to get into racing pigeons, and this is why.

I think it's an excellent idea there used to be something along those lines at the shows, but it was more along the lines of quiz panels, with successful fanciers, answering questions from the crowd.
Nobody's going to give away their secrets at these events but it's not secrets that you're after, it's that basic knowledge to get started in the right way, set out in the right direction, to form a good beginning.
Helping people avoid mistakes will make them want to continue with the sport despite those inevitable setbacks.
Another piece I'd like to add given my own situation, as well as being a good way to start in the sport by acquiring lofts clocks, pigeons and knowledge from people retiring from the sport.
Another possibly easier step into the sport is to find that older fancier and become their partner, and help to keep them in the sport and learn from working with them, instead of just listening to them
My grandfather use to race pigeons from the 70s i believe. i was apart of it in the 90s goinig to the club was a big thing back then with 5 or 6 clubs locally in are town. I think the sport has gone now.. but nice to see you given it ago 👏 wish you all the best 🫶

Iv been racing 20+ years and won a couple of races and when I started not many people helped me it was trial and error for years
So when I can help anyone I will try but im no expert
Few things I think are the most important
1,health
2,loft environment
3,good balance diet
4,don't over use meds
5,don't over feed them
There's loads of things you could look at

Excellent idea about having the experts talk. Maybe even do a live version of it on UA-cam and social media so people around the world including here in the US can even watch them talk to help generate a worldwide response and hopefully get more and more younger people involved.

Not anymore. I think there are about 300 fanciers. At least half of them are people from the middle east and Eastern Europe.
The sport is growing a little bit though, so I hope that the future is going to be bright

I’ve recently joined an old flyer ( an apprenticeship you might say ). The costs are halved, the scrapping out is halved and the loft and stock are already in place. If i was trying to market the idea that is the way I would go.

Definitely think it’s a good idea Dan, having talks and discussions about racing pigeons will be good for new fanciers like yourself.. it’s hard to work it all out on your own without getting any advise from those with experience.
In our club we used to have a pigeon moot at the end of the season with a panel of 1,2 or 3 successful fanciers from different parts of the country and people went and it was like a Q and A. It was always good for learning new things, maybe something like that might help 👍

Hello really enjoying your UA-cam videos. I’m only back racing after a 20 year break. The sport has changed so so much and as you say. It would be great to have talks with champions and get they know out there. Even though I raced before coming back I feel like a new comer Every little helps as they say. Maybe it's an idea to do a kind of podcast with people who fly or flew good with their pigeons and ask them questions about their stories. Here in the Netherlands we have something like that and it is very interesting. I know some good people with pigeons in the Netherlands, but i don't think youre going to travel all the way to here. 😅

I tried to get into it this year but I’m in Ireland and planning permission is required for a loft, something I wasn’t able to obtain on this occasion. I could resubmit for something in The 8x6 range but that’s hardly workable long term 😂

As a builder I used free wooden palettes and odds and sodds most exspence was nails and screws took me a week to make my first loft. Btw old fish in chip oils great for water proofing raw timber palettes .

Ah excellent. It takes over all of your free time if you're not careful 😂 Yes filming and editing takes ages. 2 days filming and about 10 hours editing to make a 12 minute video 😬 but hopefully it'll encourage more and more people to take it up 🤞
@@howtotrainyourpigeon as a newbie I think more people would be encouraged to take it up if they understood the actual concept! I have a few friends now that can’t believe how far the birds fly and the work that goes into it! Also would be good if you didn’t have to write cheques or postal orders 😂 hopefully more people will start flying, I can’t wait but I only have late breds for the OB program, still excited
Hi mate, I’m currently 40 years old, I am currently tied down to a footballing contract with the fa, but I will be free in 2025. So I plan on entering the sport then. I was involved with my grandad form the age of 6-14.. always wanted to do it. I really can’t wait

Hello from Essex I’ve just binge watched your entire back catalogue I’ve been keeping all sorts of birds for years last few years I’ve been a practising falconer 🙈 anyway I’ve had to pack that in for family reasons I need to spend more time at home and falconry means I’m never home
I can’t without birds so I have a few young pigeons on the way my loft is currently half built and there due in a little over a week so this channel has been totally relevant to me in every aspect 👌
I’m not part of a club and won’t be racing as such so just a bit of fun for me and if I can keep my birds healthy this year maybe a bit of racing next year
As oart of my job I’m driving around all over the south east of England and a crate of pigeons in the back is no problem so my family and I will race our own pigeons against each other for now
I think they’re incredible finding there way home the way do and I’m praying my pigeons will thanks for the channel a big help👍
That's a brilliant idea Dan I live in Bristol and it's true none of the most experienced fancy don't tell you anything if you organise something I would love to attend if it's not to far away .
At my club at the end of the season at trophy presentation night, there are 3 or 4 experienced pigeon men from the fed on the panel and there's a Q&A with them answering questions, maybe a thing other clubs could do. Might be a start.
If it can be advertised to newcomers or people interested in getting started. I think the issue with anything that runs currently is it's geared towards experienced fanciers looking to improve or try something new. I'm thinking of something that covers the basics in a bit more detail than is possible in a 15 minute video on UA-cam. It's all about numbers though I guess isn't it?

Hi Dan here‘s a little tip from a old pigeon fancier 😉 if you attach a long board under the „seats at a height of 40cm you donˋt have to bend down when cleaning. Sorry my English is not so good I hope You understand what i mean 😬

I flew pigeons from being a kid in the 70’s and was part of a federation and combine winning loft in the hot bed of the north east.Believe me you will never get a pigeon man giving you all their knowledge (they never have and never will) you have more chance of getting good tips from someone like myself who doesn’t fly any longer after 40 years in the sport and has no affiliation to any loft.Nothing and no one is more fickle than a pigeon man
Probably didn't come across clear in the video but it's not about giving away secrets and tips, it's about explaining how to get started, what's needed etc
the thing is you could talk to 10 top fanciers & they will all have different winning systems .like yourself I had to learn quick flying in the mighty UNC & WDA
@@donaldsimpson7991 yes healthy pigeons & winning bloodlines are a must thats just for starters then I used to focus on the pigeons personality .its about finding lots of little marginal gains to put you ahead of the game.(keeping it simple) 👍

im having a interesting discussion on a shooting youtube vid ,i will put it on here to see what you think ,its some thing im trying to get noticed ,because the RPRA dont seem to care about it going on and its totally illegal ,this is what i wrote after looking at the vid and the shooter saying he shot hundreds of feral pigeons ,i wrote this .rich how many of those so called feral pigeons had rings on ? ,those that did belonged to some one even kids ,so cannot be called feral ,you should also ADD what are you shooting to the list of where and when. ps its nature to get sexual urges so dont shoot a ringed pigeon because of this ,also those with rings are owend by others triyng to enjoy THEIR SPORT ,and need these lost pigeons to come home , he replied ,Hi Troy. You raise a good point as homing/racing pigeons are considered the property of their owners and therefore protected from shooting, even if they do revert to type and flock with other feral pigeons which, as I understand it, renders them useless as regards their racing properties. To put your mind at rest, none of the ferals I shot at the two venues I mentioned on the podcast had rings. Of course, it's very hard to be sure, but I spent a couple of days doing recces of both venues to observe the pigeons and was satisfied that none of them flew like racers or had visible rings. Just out of interest, and I don't know the answer, but if racing/homing pigeons are protected because they are owned by someone, is that owner also responsible for the damage they cause? my reply .they are not useless because they dont come home most are still learning worn out and need rest or been chased by hawks and take a long time to get over it ,also they pair up with feral birds thats why they end up in barns ,when lost or hawked they seek others as any living thing does ,until you race pigeons you really cannot understand the stress , money heart ache and time it takes to get a bird home from a 500 mile race , thousands get shot for no other reason than being a target for a trigger happy want to be big white hunter , im a 64 year old x pigeon racer full time vermin controller for over 45years from mice to boar so i know what does go on and air gun shooters wipe out thousands of stray pigeons just to keep their permision ,i have never heard of a shooter reporting a lost racing pigeon to the royal pigeon racing society even thoe they see them more than most ,pity really because now pigeon racing is about to fold all down to things like this , i will answer your question on being responsible if you tell me what damage they cause that justifies shooting them ,i await your reply ,,and thank you for taking time to reply in the first place,, im waiting on his reply now ,,,.im pointing this out as its part of the problem and a big part that is not talked about by pigeon fanciers .

In the boxes is a good idea. I have grills on the floor now except around the edges where they find spots to nest on, I put wood underneath to make it easy to scrape (stupidly used OSB)

Yes Dan it's important to get information from as many people as possible, I reckon u will get a load of uptake on Ur idea. I grew up racing . The information available then consists of drink liters of tea and listening to the old timers . I must say the problem with someone telling u what to do is you don't understand the biology and physics of what u are trying to make a bird do . That comes from experience. Some of the best pigeons the country has ever seen have come from extremely small teams in small lofts that have been kept as pets . Make of that as u will

when I first started in the sport I used to read write up after write up in the magazines & take the best bits from each one & I soon started winning 👍my mate is well regarded in the sport he gets invited on talk in's or moots.
Is a 'moot' a regional thing? Like a chinwag in the pub after racing or is it more organised specifically for new starters?
@@howtotrainyourpigeon a moot is a panel of top fanciers usually local like her in the north east would attract up north combine & west durham amal fanciers.but my mate is being invited further afield. its actually established fanciers who attend to pick their brains .

@@howtotrainyourpigeon not a problem 👍Iam no longer in the fancy so lost touch a little but for what its worth my tips to anyone starting out would be never overfeed, spend time building a bond with your pigeons (tame happy pigeons will actually race home to you).don't think you have to pay stupid money for pigeons its the right managment that wins races. the basket is the pedigree & keep it simple don't get drawn into the pills & potions trend.hope it helps👍

I think that's a great idea, I've always been in to the pigeons but never been able to start up with them due to family and work, but I'm finding I have some more time on my hands and would really like to start up with the birds. Chatting to yourself or some more experienced pigeon people would be great for all new comers so Yes great idea. If you have any information of who to speak to about starting up first port of call you could do a video on that to get you started and help me and others out
I'm in the US and just doing my homework to start out. I like the conference idea you are floating but since I am not local, I propose an online event. This way it can be global. Have a large Teams or Zoom meeting and have presenters present. I know I would dial in and participate.

Dan as allways im going to give you my HONEST opinion, take it on board if you want to or not, no skin off my nose, after racing 20 yaars being around pigeons and pigeon men 10 years before that, i can tell you this f0r a FACT. Weather you get pigeon men to talk or not there only going to tell you so much, they will tell you what food they use, not how much, not other foods they also use. Most will telll you they just use fresh water and dont use any supplements, some will say they just give vits once a week, they will tell you the treak for coxy and canker and worms before breeding season and again before racing and thats it. Most if not all will tell you that is all they do. There simply not going to tell you everyting they do because they would be giving you and others a stick to beat them with. I told you 2 years ago what i gave my pigeons in the water and food wise and weight wise and how mych proteins etc etc, my pigeons got fresh water once per week, every other day i had someting in the drinker and i told you what it was, now i believe lads put bottled water in the drinker that theres 2 much in tap water witch doesent surprise me at all, as allways Dan i hope you get this going and novices hearvit and pick up some tips , but there is no pigeon man out there unless hes youre best pal will tell you EVERYTING, my last 2 seasons racing my pal our best flyer at the time told me, because he new i was getting out of racing them, he new i had room for 25 young birds in an 8X4 section wit 70 perches in it, young birds should have at least 2 perches each if not 3 more the better, happyer birds. From 24 down to my last 7 in my last season i took 2/3 positions perbweek over 12 races against 30+ fanciers racing 1200 birds every week with out getting 1 win witch we put down 2 my low numbers sent V somenlads sending 50, 70 , 80, and most sending 30-40I then was a silent partner with my pal for several years after that until i had 2 move on in life and my pal won loads more. Moral of this story, pigeon men are the biggest liars even if you buy half there loft they wont tell you EVERYTING, but if you listen and take as much in you will eventually learn enough 2 start getting some wins. Im 46 now i hope 2 get back into racing when im older as pigeon racing has allways been seen as a retired mans sport. Cherers DES
Yeah the point wouldn't be to get all the tricks but the basics and the common knowledge, explained in a digestible way. Novices aren't going to take in too much detail but stuff like you just mentioned will be beneficial.
I get so many messages from people asking simple stuff like where and when to get birds, what's a good pigeon loft, training, medicating for worms or cocci etc. none of that is giving anything away but could save a lot of new starters (including myself) a bunch of time and money. A lot of the info is in books but as I say, it's hard to digest for a newcomer. When I first looked into starting out I had no idea what people meant by YB, OB, Percy, floating, darkness, chuck, reading off, basketing, driving the hen, training to the tin, trapping.... All of that, simple once you know but could be enough to put people off. Then there's the basics of planning your year, schedules etc. Listening to experienced fliers talk about that and then having the option to ask questions at the end would have been useful for me.
We'll see anyway, it might be a non starter but there's no point in complaining about the sport's demise yet doing nothing to prevent it.
@howtotrainyourpigeon well I hope you do get this off the ground, even if it was in a small way and coverd all the basics for a novice, I was lucky 2 shadow my brother for 10 years and see and learn all the good and bad there was in the sport, we so I taught, but 20 years later I had found out I had only scratched the surface in my first 10 years, how where these top fanciers taking the top 10 prizes in the club weekly and 10 mins ahead of the rest etc etc, we'll I definitely learned that in the next 20 and especially my last 2 in racing. There is alot of old interviews in racing on dvd and now UA-cam im sure. In ireland we have a guy lives near me called EDDIE BARRY, he's gone from novice less than 10 years ago to 1 of dublins top flyers, he has loafs of videos out on you tube, where he visits holland and Belgium and lofts all over ireland, and some videos pre auction, some leaving the sport some just selling late breads or tinning out yearlings who are bread in the purple but dident perform as young birds. You will as will any1 who reads this and watches videos. Anyways you go try get some interviews going and help the novices get going, I hope you get the loft visits going I would love 2 see that big time DAN , I applaud you very much for you're hard work on here, and you're very genuine intentions 2 help out fellow novices. PS: you need to go trough what you feed and put in the drinker during racing, moulting, off season, breeding season, weeneing young birds etc etc. Cheers DAN. DES
@@donaldsimpson7991 Personally I think more should be done by the companies that make money from the sport. Clock manufacturers would do well to offer a discounted system for clubs to lend out to new starters for a year. Feed companies, medication, online auctioneers, should all be clubbing together to get more people into it. But until then it'll be up to the fancy I guess
My second year racing, I found the system x video on UA-cam very useful it went by month by month, also the interview with Paul swindle on youtube along with Mike Mcloughlin videos. I never expected racing to be as costly I personally don't think young teens could afford to enter the sport loft, clock, fees, birds, food, etc etc
@howtotrainyourpigeon all really great ideas lad's I have to say. In ireland the only ting I have ever seen sponsored was the 40foot trailer we had in the IRISH SOUTH ROAD FED, BOSMOLEN pigeon food put money towards that, how much I actually don't no I was a teenager at the time. After that we had a pigeon stud in Dublin beside the airport SANDYHILL PIGEON STUD AND SUPPLYS it was called they sponsored some new trophies to replace old ones that had seen better day's, I actually as a 16 year old went on to work at that stud I used to clean it once a week for pennies lol. Other than that if a club was having a charity auction for lets say a new roof or similar, it broke some of the top fanciers in Dublin hearts to donate a young bird or a pair for auction, I no they did in 2016 1 of the lads son had cancer and sadly died the following year, but the lads raised alot of money for that in fairness, since then I don't no I'm generally out of contact with pigeon in and around Dublin. Would be great if benzing and all that gang helped out but there all in f0r what they can get out of the sport rather than give back by the looks of tings, I'm sad 2 see you lads say its a dieng sport, 1 big problem in ireland now I see is you need planning permission 2 build a loft the last 5 years I was blown away
