I like to think no one cares about your rig like you do. If you're willing to build the skill to do it- you're in great shape and it's a great feeling!
I think it also makes you understand its functions more so, thus making you a safer sportsman. Which is why I bought my first motorcycle not running on purpose. Rebuilding it from the ground up helps you to understand and appreciate it so much more, in my opinion. It scares me to know that I share the city streets with people who don't even know what their battery looks like or if they're running the proper gasoline.
the philosophy at the shop I worked at was heat cycling was important on 2 strokes but significant combustion pressure is needed to seat the rings to the cylinder wall before the cross hatching glazes. Nice video, I can't wait to get a paramotor
From my days of racing motocross and enduros The manufactures were not too concerned with the match between the transfer ports and the cases. I would always match these ports, usually going no higher up and down than needed to give a smooth radius. I have cured several jetting issues with this and the smoother flow the more power it will make. You might want to check this the next time you split the cases.
This was amazing I definitely learned something I needed desperately and I got to see you doing something extremely cool, Ofcourse I don't think I have the balls to try it but thanks for taking us along on the ride. Keep up the great work bro.
I was taught to clean the cylinder bores very thoroughly with hot soapy water using dish detergent to remove any tiny grit and iron particles adhering to the cylinder walls after honing. Maybe it is not quite so important now, because of the new different cylinder surface treatments and piston ring combinations that require a much finer cylinder finish, but cleaning was very important with plain cast iron bores. Immediate oiling of bores after cleaning is of course required to prevent rusting of iron surfaces afterward. Anyhow, thank you for your great and always interesting videos.
I was hoping that this was going to be a video on how to find a moped cylinder and piston that will fit on the Vitto 185. I can actually afford to lose some power. Many people are dropping down to Atom 80 size motors. Would be neat to find something cheap that fits the lower case. I've been told that the original Vitto was based on another companies pistons.
Great video. I have the same unit. Have gone thru 3 exhaust in less than 40 hours. Cracks at bend. Otherwise a great engine. Wish Vittorazi had used a two or three piece exhaust.
Replaced with new one each time. So the first one lasted less than 5 hours, number 2 lasted 8 hours. The new one I replaced has not cracked yet. The first one was chrome, the 2 and 3rd are black.
@briansmobile1 I always thought that using a stone hone/deglazer on a coated cylinder was a big no no? Tip for next time... I just redid my '77 moto-ski motor. Used the same tool, but non coated cylinder(maybe it was lol). I found using oil on the stones clogged up fast and made a mess... I ended up filling a sink with water and lots of dish soap...seemed to work great. Just get the cylinder dried and oiled asap after!
So I’m buying anew flattop paramotor and how often should you do the piston / head rebuild? You said in the video you had 400 hrs on it? And what is your recommendation on hrs to do this service to keep you motor in tip top shape. How many hour did it take to do cylinder/piston and carbonated service total? I want to do these services on my own also but would like to do it the first time with a pro like you. Are you for hire because I just live in Am. Fork near you?
I love two stroke engines. I think everyone should have a go at rebuilding one. They are so inexpensive and easy to run and work on. You could pick one up at a scrapyard for cheap or free.
that piston can still be used. i do it all the time also scratches can also be caused by the mixture for bike 2 stroke engines it sould be for litre 1:50 the vertical scratshes only affect the power wen they go past the piston rings at the top TDC
Alway good Brian I would love to fly in your machine, but am quite terrified flying in a jet wonder why I think because you have no control of what's happening
How do you monitor fuel usage to make sure you don't run out? Did you have an aversion to heights before flying? Does the wind from the prop fill, and lift the sail/chute? What happens if you loose thrust/engine while flying?
Dude. You're like me. Lots of questions. Here goes. 1. I lean left and look at the semi transparent tank. 2. Yes. I still do. I just manage it with directed thought. (think over pre-flight checklist and gear- training etc.) 3. No. Forward motion does. 4. Fly like a regular para-glider.
...You can be my wingman anytime... You mentioned two different oil mixtures 32:1... and then you never completed that thought. My 185 is on a truck on it's way! Thanks for this vid, I'm sure I'll be reading my own instructions, but what is the normal operating mixture? different than the break in mix ratio?
Great video. What do you call that tool you used to take the marks from inside the cylinder head. The tool you had attracted to the drill. Where can i buy it.
No, in the US, paramotors are licensed under FAR 103, which doesn't require any airworthiness certification, or even any pilot certification. You fly at your own risk, so it's your responsibility to minimize that risk
When BMW came out with Nikasyl cylinder coatings on their bikes in the dark ages, they said to not hone the cylinders at all, just wipe them clean and reassemble. It must be significantly thicker stuff these days.
I've always been under the impression that you shouldn't hone nikasyl due to the fact that the coating is porous, and the the fine powder created from the honing stones fills in those pores, thus taking away lubrication..
hi, i know its been a long time since you posted this video, can you remember details about the piston and where you got it from and do you have numbers from the box it came in
Hey brian, love your channel. Could you do a video on the moster 185 pull start? I'm obviously doing something wrong. Mine slipped from day 1, and wore out quickly.
Hi Brian, i hope you can help, as you seem to have quite the experience maintaining your moster! After my 25h maintenance , my power band is not constant especially at cruise rpm, which is 6000rpm. My motor runs smooth, rich, yet when it reaches 5800rpm and while I continue to throttle slowly, nothing happens for like 2 to 3 mm of throttle abd then suddenly it jumps to 6800rpm (climb). I cleaned the throttle handle and its cable, and adjusted the hi/lo screwsxpn the carb bit i still face the prob. Any advices?
Hey Brian as always another great vid. I must ask what is a good torque wrench you would recommend for low- higher torque specs. I currently have a Stanley fat Max torque wrench but the range is 20-250 ft/lbs. I'm looking for something in the lower range like 5ft/lbs and up.
At 14:21 that's a landing pad for "Yellicopters" it's like the "H" you see on buildings and adjacent to Hospital parking lots. Yellicopters are not only yellow, but they are so loud they're not allowed to land in town. (you can see the commuter path that connects it to town below it) The yelling is too much for young ears and especially during the early & late hours that yellicopters fly. (just kidding!) The other reason you might find Y's on mountains outside of college towns is for college spirit given that the college has a Y in it's name. (too bad Yale doesn't have a mountain like this near it- Brigham Young University does though)
want more bang for your buck? the hack way is take a half round file and do 5 stokes over the top side of the exaust port want even more? widen the u ports on the bottom of the piston also. wy up? the exaust gets out faster and the new mixture gets in faster in a bigger volume dont forget the engine will get hotter and so you will need a hotter sparkplug there are guids on UA-cam to help you further just search 2 stroke engine. also you can make more compression or "sqeeze" by using 2000 grid sandpaper sticking it on some glass NO BUBBLES! and sanding the surface down on the gaschet side flat make sure the piston does not hit the sparkplug on TDC with some bubble gum on the piston and the head in place turn the engine one time by hand. if it cant go one stroke you need a new head because you hit the sparkplug
HOW MANY HOURS WAS ON YOUR MOTOR B? Yes Instruction are there for a reason LOL Honda is building the cr125 and cr250 again :) Yes!!! 4 stroke sucks. They even sound like shit and with no power band :). Wow that is a awful price for a piston.. actually that is ridiculous as far as I am concerned, and there is no reason for it in this day in age. But when something is popular and kind of new they will rape you.. I still rebuild my 2stoke 600cc yamaha snowmobile motor and the pistons are like 35-50 bucks.
WHY DIDNT YOU MENTION THE DECOMPRESSION CYLINDER HOLE.? THAT WILL CLOG UP .AND WILL MAKE STARTING THE ENGINE HARDER WHEN TRYING TO START? OR DID YOU FORGET? AND THATS WHEN THE PROBLEMS STARTS .... YOU FORGETTING LOOK AT 5.23 BE QUICK THEN PAUSE YOULL BE ABLE TO SEE THE SMALL HOLE IN CYLINDER.. VERY TRUSTWORTHY KNOWLEDGE. BY BRAINSMOBILE 1
6 years ago you helped me fix my Cummins truck all the time... Now years later I'm following you around in my new hobby.
Great video! About how many hours did you put on this piston before you replaced it?
Nothing is more trustworthy than your own hands. Great video.
I like to think no one cares about your rig like you do. If you're willing to build the skill to do it- you're in great shape and it's a great feeling!

Brian.....I've watched your car/truck repair videos in the past.......didn't know you were into ppg.....very cool !...
the philosophy at the shop I worked at was heat cycling was important on 2 strokes but significant combustion pressure is needed to seat the rings to the cylinder wall before the cross hatching glazes.
Nice video, I can't wait to get a paramotor
Well done Brian and the bonus footage is something I always wanted to do but I think I'll buy a drone first. LOL
Enjoyed. Thanks for sharing this vid. Nice to see a real mechanic working on a Paramotor

Good work bud, nothing wrong with the way you did it, i have been round two strokes for too many years all good
Super informative. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome Josh!
Very nice video Brian, bookmarking this one for sure!

Helped me a lot on my motor, thanks man!!
any tips for removing the old base gasket easily
I always oil both sides of the new base gasket and it usually comes off easy the next time
"savvy" would be the operative spelling, but thanks.
I use a razor blade and shave the paper down to just a film taking care not to take any aluminum.
Nice Video! Very informative....it helped me with my rebuild...
Thanks! Happy flying!
Great video. I have the same unit. Have gone thru 3 exhaust in less than 40 hours. Cracks at bend. Otherwise a great engine. Wish Vittorazi had used a two or three piece exhaust.
Crap dude! Did you just weld it? Or replace it?
Replaced with new one each time. So the first one lasted less than 5 hours, number 2 lasted 8 hours. The new one I replaced has not cracked yet. The first one was chrome, the 2 and 3rd are black.
@@davidh7636 is it possible that you're not tightening it correctly in a cross pattern and I wouldn't torque them over 14lbs.
Very nice video on the rebuild.
@briansmobile1 I always thought that using a stone hone/deglazer on a coated cylinder was a big no no?

Interesting idea for sure. I did very, very little honing at all. We'll see how it turns out. So far it starts fantastic compared to before.
BFATE,,, that shit is nuts. I bet flying that thing is fun. I can't tell if it's an adrenaline rush or peaceful?

You were dropping red paint bombs on the Y, right?
Riiiiiiiight. : )
Hopefully you can get Walbro carb parts locally and save money. Pump gas these days is hard on the plastics and hoses.
Alway good Brian

Worked fixing two strokes all my life....think I'll just stick with my drone for aerial footage, just saying😀
Good video.
Nice man!
Once your feet leave the ground you will have the sickness bro!

Bonus Vertigo at the End!
How do you clean the cylinder compressor hole? Thanks for your videos, are great!!
Soften it with solvent and use compressed air, or use a small phillips driver if you have to.
What type of wing are you flying, how many square meters? Like Sundays and Wednesdays, Thanks for you commitment.
كيف يتم تعديل البستون على الملف المغنطيسى
Is there any requirements for an inspector to check off your work after completion? It's a great hobby and boy that area is beautiful for flying.

I went SUPER easy on it. I rambled on and on about that, but I had to cut it. Wiping it out is best.
How many hours did u have before the rebuild
Is piston slapping pretty much the same thing the GM LS motors have been accused of doing? although they deny it.
Sounds controversial for sure.
hi, i know its been a long time since you posted this video, can you remember details about the piston and where you got it from and do you have numbers from the box it came in
Do you use fine or medium grit stones for honing
Thanks for the good video
wow, those must be some premium parts for $200! Oh well, it should run good as new now.
Hone job looked pretty good. I didnt see any of the common mistakes people make.
Hey brian, love your channel. Could you do a video on the moster 185 pull start? I'm obviously doing something wrong. Mine slipped from day 1, and wore out quickly.
Moster185 Is that the name of the engine?
Any experience with the redfly 210 motor. Looking to buy one, but I can't find any info on them.

How many hours did you have on the engine before you overhauled it?
I bought the engine used, so I have to guess.. my guess is about 400-500 hours. I obviously don't know for sure.
Thanks. That seems a reasonable TBO for a 2 cycle. I've seen the mountains you fly over, so I think you were wise to overhaul the engine.
Awesome! No.need for ring compressor I see.
You could put some oil on the gasket, so it won´t adhere the next time you open the cylinder, and can, of course, reuse it.
good job
Hey Brian as always another great vid. I must ask what is a good torque wrench you would recommend for low- higher torque specs. I currently have a Stanley fat Max torque wrench but the range is 20-250 ft/lbs. I'm looking for something in the lower range like 5ft/lbs and up.

impressive,,God speed
Nice ! Don't forget the DECOMPRESSION CYLINDER HOLE ! LOL!
That's what I'm being told. I'll have to do a video on that too it seems.
That's the way I do it too .
Skills
This video was a stoners delight!informative and Hilarious in the beginning (rhombus) and zen at the end with the engine fade out. Great video! 👍
Phew 250 for a single piston..... Gotta love aviation stuff
