Trouba is a problem with that contract. He isn’t worth half his cap hit, let alone $8MM. Doesn’t bring it offensively anymore, constantly takes brutal penalties, and puts himself out of position to make hits.

@phil Yeap! That trade was a bad one. But they tried to add to some grit at the time with Sam Blais who got injured at the beginning of his tenure with the Rangers.
Who knows if Buchnevich would have made a difference with the "odd couple" long term?
Kreider and Zibanedjad play like a duet anyway. Maybe that's why nobody fits with them at the end of the day.

A very memorable moment and special gesture from our future Captain (#16) as he consoled Igor after the loss. All Igor really needs from us is a few goals per game in the post season and he will handle his business. It's a shame we can't oblige him. The saddest part is that Igor puts so much on himself and seemingly self-shoulders much of the blame. He deserved far better from his supporting cast.
I've read a lot of articles saying that Trouba cost us the series. We will never truly know what would have happened if he avoided ridiculous penalties, giveaways, horrid decision making and atrocious puck handling in our own zone. But it goes without saying, and I've said it for 3 years... He seems like a good guy, but that doesn't equate to Good hockey player. Making him Captain backfired, because they'll never bench a captain. Thinking back to 1994... If Mike Keenan were coaching this team, Trouba would have been wearing plain clothes for the entire postseason, and rightfully so.
Trouba has been killing us for the past 3 postseasons and I'm getting tired of screaming "NOOOO TROUBA" every damn time he touches the puck, misses a hit or lets his man fly past him, leaving him in the dust. Enough is enough.
Vinny has overwhelmingly become the heartbeat of this team. He is our captain as far as I'm concerned, and while dumping the contract of #8 may prove difficult, I would pull every string possible to make that a reality.

It's the same song and dance with the Rangers every playoffs. They are not physical enough. They Continue to skate up hill. Opponents constantly in Rangers zone. They don't score. PK Suban was very critical, yet correct about Rangers lack of aggression. Rangers wasted years under King Henry. They are doing the same with Igor. It is rare to have back to back really good goalies. Rangers keep failing these goalies. Their last coach was fired because of this very same thing we just saw. The problem isn't with any one player like Zibanejad or Trouba, though they, especially Trouba, had some serious issues. The problem is that for every player like that, there isn't any other player that balances them out. They are a quick team, that gets a lot of rushes, makes passes, and scores nice goals. They take advantage of their talent on special teams. But there needs to be some size. There needs to be better playmakers for the scorers. Panarin, Zab, Kreider, and Lafreniere need some people that bring it all together. More people like Fox, not necessarily defensemen, that can quartetback this whole thing. Florida played better as a team. The Rangers get individual blaming because it looks like a disrupted unit, with different, skilled, and capable guys trying to get it done almost in an improvised fashion. And they don't deal well when their flow is disrupted. So more size, physicality, and complementary players that balance out the skill, with smart gameplay. Someone like a Messier, who doesn't necessarily get Messier numbers in terms of scoring.

@spinin ...someone like Matthew Tkachuk's brother maybe? Those are the types of players a team that want to win it all should look for.
But to do that you need to make a blockbuster trade like the Panthers did 2 years ago with Calgary and I don't think that Ottawa would take the bait knowing what we know now about the result of the Calgary-Florida trade.
BTW, there is no one like Mark Messier in this league anymore. But there are a few close enough like Brady Tkachuk who could give the Rangers the grit and balance you are talking about.
We can dream about what a Brady Tkachuk instead of Mika Zibanedjad would have done for the Rangers this year. Imagine the Florida series between the brothers.
OK! I'm done dreaming. I have to get back down to earth again. ;)

The Panthers won the presidents cup and that off season trade Hubberdeau the top score and Weegar thier top scoring D man . Why ? Beacuse they were not built to win a cup. The Rangers have been trying to hide certain issues for a long time. No first line right wing and the fact that they could ususally out score teams but have had issues with heavy teams all the time. They have a bunch of soft players and to be honest to many soft players. You can have some. Not everyone can bang and hit but Rangers have way to many of these type of players. They need to change the mix.

Trouba and Goodrow need to be traded for cap space. Kakko should be traded because its just not working out and you cant justify giving him an extension with money being so tight. None of the UFAs should be kept. With those savings the Rangers should have enough cap space to extend Igor, bring in a RW1 and two solid veteran heavy hitting defensemen. Those are the biggest offseason needs. With Othmann and Berard promotable the Rangers will have more than enough players on contract to staff the bottom six internally. Trading Kreider would be a mistake that would gut the top line. And the Rangers cannot get it done with just one scoring line.

Finesse disappears in seven game series against bigger teams. During the season, they survive. It’s a game here, a game there. No matter what guys think it’s not just finesse. Toughness with ability will always win out. Panarin 49 goals in the regular season, big deal. Give me two like Bennett of Florida for one Panarin. That’s my point. It always comes down to physical. That’s this sport. Then go play tennis. From the very beginning of this series, they were out of it.

Bare with me if you will.
3 of the 4 cups the Rangers have won in their storied franchise were before the end of WWII when you had to win only 2 series to get the job done in a 6 teams league.
Since then they won just one and the silver lining is that it's one of the most memorable in NHL history for good reasons. In 1994 they found a way NOT TO BLOW IT but they almost did. If not for the leadership of Mark Messier at the time we would be talking about a Red Sox or Cubs kind of drought. At least the NHL 54 years record without a championship which was "owned" by New-York has been broken by Toronto (57 years and counting) and a couple of teams are chasing it like Vancouver and Buffalo. ;)
In 1974 I became a Rangers fan thinking in my young and gullible mind that my team would win the cup many times only to realize that winning the Stanley Cup is a matter of "destiny" more than anything else.
In other words, the stars need to be aligned for that to happen.
And who controls that? Not me, that I can tell you.
This year I thought they were because of the 4 wins in OT, the spectacular performance of Chris Kreider in Carolina, Shesterkin's outstanding play all around, Trocheck's poise, the arrival of Lafrenière, Goodrow's timely goals, etc. But no, not yet, not this year...again. :(
The New-York Rangers always find a way to disappoint, except in 1994 and when the NHL was a totally different league.
At least the Yankees seem to have something special cooking this year, so there is hope for Gotham City. :)
This season I tried to see if the stars were aligned for the Rangers and watching the standings I thought to myself, hummm! Maybe a final between New-York and Vancouver, 1994 vs 2024 (sounded great), Laviolette's influence, the best goalie in Shesterkin, the quarter back in Fox on defense (overwhelmed a bit in this year playoffs), one of the best PP and PK in the league, no serious injuries to the core players (apparently), the arrival of Lafrenière, Rempe's as a joker (needs to learn how to time his hits though, hitting the boards gets you nowhere), Trocheck and Goodrow's impact, the return of Chytil, and Panarin (of course but of course not), etc.
But frankly, nothing seems to be enough to get them to the "promised land".
So, I bet on the alignment of the stars yet again. Next possibility, they win it for their 100th anniversary in 2026. ;)

Sounds like you bought what the media was selling in an effort to get clicks and eyeballs on their jibberish.
The Cup is the hardest trophy to win in pro sports.
The road gets harder the further you go.
If u are not built for it, you only go so far on that road.
Granted, a team can ride a hot goalie a long way down that road.
But eventually, your forwards have to get their noses dirty, as that road gets narrower and harder to navigate.
#10 has never been, and will never be that guy.
      Ditto 93.
73 was a novelty act, and 20/16 got neutralized by a rugged, nose over the puck, hockey team from FL
All in all, it was not a bad season for the NYR, built the way they were.
But no way were they a reincarnation of the 1994 team. Not even close, when u look at the lineup.
That team was built on ex Blackhawks and Oilers players that had been there before and knew their coach well.
2024 team had nothing like that.
Too bad the NY press did not know that.
Might have saved some fans some anguish.

With the series with FLA i did not see 1 single hard cross-check to the back or head of Tkachuk or Bennett even if it costs them a penalty or two you are sending a message to the other team. There was no sticking up for Shesterkin when he was being harassed by all the Fla players. Whats worse is players like Kreider & Miller who are built like stone walls rarely use their bodies for hard bone crushing hits, its almost as if they are too humble or shy to use that aspect of the game. Also getting Wennberg & Roslovic at trade deadline was worthless & Kakko is a compleat bust, how they keep playing him is beyond me...Rempe with his limited ice time was more of an offensive threat than kakko was or ever will be,,,,get rid of him pleaseeeee.
