The Klabautermann is a rl sailors legend from north Europe. I like that it explains a bit more why Usopp saw the Merry exactly as any other crewmember, more than the rest of the Strawhats who also still loved the ship. Though his fight with Luffy was far from being just about that, he had been doubting his place and "worth" in the crew for a long time, and the whole situation with the lost money and the assessment of the Merry was his breaking point, all his insecurities came out in the open full force.
It’s so cool for Oda to include something like that!! Everything he was feeling had just reached that boiling point. All his self doubt, his insecurities and inadequacies that he’s placed on his own shoulders, combined with the stress and frustration of their current situation that he feel’s responsible for no less. Plus the dude just got beat within an inch of his life only to further reinforce that he isn’t Luffy, Sanji or Zoro. All of whom could have single handedly annihilated Franky house on their own. The merry was the straw that broke the camels back. It was a tough situation between him and Luffy but maybe, really, it couldn’t have gone any other way.
I have an Aunt, lets just say she's kooky. She loves her Car so much that its literally sinking into the driveway. She refers to the car like its a person more so then an object. So whenever I watch these episode, I relate Usopp's situation to my Aunts.
Good analysis on Usopp, it's not as simple as some people would like to make it. There are still far too many people who hate Usopp for not being like the rest of the crew, without realizing that that's exactly why he hates himself.
Usopp is a really multifaceted character. There’s a lot that’s probably laying underneath the surface. Things that could probably even be traced back to his dads abandonment of his mom and him. His imposter syndrome and self doubt have just painted a picture of himself that really just isn’t true.
One of the most heartbreaking moments in the arc. The fact that Kaku said that his assessment was accurate. CP9 might be a bunch of government dogs but they took their undercover job seriously. They wouldn't be world renowned shipwrights if they didn't know what they were doing.
Yeah, after we learn Usopp witnessed Merry's spirit, his reaction that led up to the duel makes a lot of sense. He saw Merry as a crewmate with its own soul and consciousness. It becomes a lot harder to let her go if she's not just an inanimate object. From his POV he was in a way the only StrawHat fighting for one of their own. Yeah, Usopp did say that he was aware Merry couldn't sail anymore. He knows he was wrong at some level. Luffy and Franky were correct when they said that even if they love Merry as much as any of the crewmates, a ship is a ship. And yet he couldn't bring himself to stop taking care of Merry in her final moments. Maybe he was reminded of his sick mother. Maybe he does respect his father and at the same time he resents him a little for leaving. Many things can be true at the same time. Different people in similar situations make different decisions all the time. Some are more logical, and some are more emotional. Idk, for example, some people refuse medical treatment if it goes against their beliefs. Is that wrong? Some people refuse financial help because of their pride. Is that valid? Who's to say? Usopp has a big heart, don't be too hard on him lol
The more you peel back the layers of usopps character and what he’s dealing with, the sadder it is! You make a great point about his mom! The Merry is on her last voyage and to let her go like any old material item, he just couldn’t do that. She was real! The love that was poured into the ship made her real. To accept that is certainly no easy thing. But all of that combined with his self doubts and insecurities, their current situation with the money and everything else. It was just a recipe for disaster. We’re still wondering how they’re going to reconcile this!
Who would have thought at the beginning that the big villains from this arc weren't going to be the Franky family, but some of the nice Galley la company employees? Also that pigeon with fire reflected in his eyes was so cool lol
Hello! I loved your reactions from OPLA and decided to caught up with your anime reactions. Yes, Robin did not call the crew to his names yet. Love that you guys are enjoying the show. Take care!!
Right on! We hope you enjoyed coming this far with us! It’s sure been a journey! Probably so she could detach at a moments notice when the time was right. That’s what we sorta initially thought at least. Thanks for your support!
There is an additional layer to Usopp's mutiny. Remember that in his own faulty view and logic, he is the weak link. He equates "abandoning Merry at the first real hardship", as a redflag and telltale sign of his own future. He thinks that because he is the useless member of the crew, should the situation warrant it they'll cut him loose. And Luffy's outburst in anger, when he was almost about to kick him out, before Sanji interrupted him, reinforce him in his delusion.
You’re definitely right! He’s just too much in his head, plus with the heightened state of the moment and the self doubt that’s been growing in him in top of that! It just boiled over and went to a place it never should have.
Personally I think that Usopp's thinking he is just dragging the crew down is his biggest thoughts. If you go and think that for yourself, about yourself for a long time it will surely have a negative impact. I guess feeling like you don't belong. Being in a band for example. If I where a bit younger and in a band I think I would question if I was of use to the others. I think I'm over stuff like that now tho, and just try to do my best whenever.
No you’re 100% correct. Those things eventually burst when they’re bottled up under pressure for so long. Honestly probably since his dad left him and his mom. But I’m sure if each crew member was asked what they really thought of Usopp it’d bring him to tears how much he’s valued among the crew. This is a very human aspect of OP and probably not unfair to say that everyone can relate to that.
Not Franky being the one to reveal the mystery of Merry's Klabautermann spirit that was set up way back in Skypeia. I absolutely adore how these characters are written. Remember we went from deciding who we wanted as a shipwright between Kaku and Lucci to now this? 😅 So excited to see you guys in the next batch of episodes
I understand your points on how the friendship should not be ruined cz of Merry..in that universe, it makes sense due to all the things Usopp was going through..that u all picked up on.. there's a good comment I remember..if any of us was in OnePiece..there's a chance we could be Usopp..a realist..forcing himself to be brave..Isekai'd in this universe.. and with all those powerhouses around, imposter syndrome will kick in..and to see such a miracle with Merry, no one believing the words, the quarrel will happen..and we might opt for mutiny. Luffy did not handle the case pretty good too right... now how does this resolve is another thing, but things like these need to happen..its life..fiction or real.
The interaction between him and Luffy was probably one of the most realistic situations where you can really dig into the human aspects of these characters and the situation. He feels inadequate in pretty much every way. Plus the insecurity of thinking he’d be cut away from being the weakest link. There’s just so many things putting weight on his shoulders until it collapsed and fell apart.
Y’all need to rewatch that whole scene with usopp and luffy again because usopp didn’t leave the crew Just for the ship. He felt like a burden to them aswell

Lolol probably an apt comparison!

And for a moment you think, no, the Merry is ok! Only again to come back down to reality. :/

Talk about a twist though. Incredible.
The most evil pigeon in all of fiction! Lolol

Great video, guys! What an exciting arc to be in right now
Thanks a bunch!! We’re loving this one so far! It’s a highlight of our weeks to watch OP!
Cat-Cat fruit...on Lucci wearing Gucci, shall we call him Rob Gucci? does he Purr?😅
LOLOLOL he’s got that designer taste!
I always forget that Hattori with flames in his eyes isn't a funny edit, its an actual scene in this story
Right?!? He’s just like the most evil pigeon in all of fiction lolol

Super excited!
Always a pleasure having you here!
Klabautermann is a german word and german ship fairy tale
That’s so cool that Oda included something like that!! Really shows just how many influences he’s had!

The Merry isn't the actual reason for Usopp leaving, have you guys already forgotten or do you just not know
In our discussion, we did touch on the idea of Usopp’s imposter syndrome being a factor as to why he decided to leave the crew.
Did you not watch their discussion? They literally state how all of this led up to his decision. Not just the marry.

you should've finish the video first before commenting
You clearly didn’t finish the video because they talk about that in their discussion.
