The FULL Story of the Monster at Enfield

  • The saga of what has come to be known as the Enfield Monster, or Horror, took place in Enfield Illinois, in 1973. Like many of the musty corridors of Fortean lore, this particular flap leaves more questions than answers, and the explanations range from the likely, to the impossible.
If nothing else, this tale goes to show that sometimes, the accepted explanations are just as perplexing as the alternative.
We'll never know what happened here, but the events of Illinois in 73 are an essential piece of Americana's cryptid-lore.

You are right. Similar proof of this can be observed in the old police interrogation trick of asking a child/young adult found in the area of an incident if they happened to see a couple of (insert the appropriate minority or sub culture members) running from the scene. The child, thinking there can be no harm in confirming what the cop “already knows” will probably say yes. The police then tell the child there actually was NOBODY seen in the area and begins to expose and exploit the child as a liar. The pressure, feelings of shame and guilt have been known to get the unsettled child/young adult to confess to something they didn’t do. It’s a terrible technique that ruined lives.

We thought we had lost our puppy and ran out into the street, closing the door behind us. A boy of about 8 or 9 helpfully told us he had JUST seen it running down the street, and he pointed to where he saw it last. Off we ran, in pursuit. An hour later, we found the puppy hiding in a corner of the kitchen.

My name is Hugh and I have been a Sasquatch enthusiast since I was a kid in the '70s and you sir have some of the most entertaining videos and content that one can find anywhere. I would recommend to anyone that is interested in Sasquatch/Bigfoot to get the last actual printed newsletter on the subject...The Bigfoot Times by legendary Sasquatch historian Daniel Perez. So I mainly landed on the left side of my upper-face, then because it was mostly downhill, when I crashed going that fast, I skidded off the pedestrian overpass into the creek. Now, I'm sweaty, creekwater-wet and the C.H.P. says I have to wait 45 minutes before Medi-Flight gets here, and County Sheriffs won't let the E.M.T. into the creekbed, because of all the blackberries down here. Sheriff's say if Medi-Flight has one of those U-Haul pads, they'll think about it. I can't reach my wallet, that's on my left back pocket, by my left shoulder is all bent up behind me. It's hard to concentrate to text with all the flashlights, and them shouting. @@napatora Agree. And we will do this to a fault, even. It's even been told by people, like bigfoot witnesses for example, that even when they've had a clear view, with ample time to see details, and they KNOW that what they are looking at is something 'that isn't supposed to exist', that their minds will still try to somehow rationalize and go to something that you are taught is "real" and 'believable'. Like, people have said to the effect "I knew what I was looking at had to be the creature they call Sasquatch, or bigfoot", then they go on to say how their mind still kept trying to go back and somehow fit it into categories that are known, like that it still somehow was just a bear at an odd angle, or a deer or raccoon and the lighting was just bad... We are taught that there is so much mockery and stigma around the "unexplained" that even when we are by ourselves we fear admitting when we see the unusual, and feel like we are crazy or wrong or something of the sort.

At the time I was relocating and rescuing reptiles so I immediately decided I would have to take my husband to the call with me because she sounded like she was hallucinating. Maybe she was dangerously mentally ill? I didn’t know but it concerned me. When I got there, I was amazed to see a brick wall with baby green tree snakes coming out of the weep holes like tendrils of ivy emerging and swaying slightly. The mother or even mother/s had laid their eggs within the foundation of the wall and the babies had hatched and sought their way out by climbing up the inside and come out the very small aeration holes. I didn’t know this woman but this strange and unlikely event caused me to consider her hallucinatory. My ignorance, not hers!

I grew up in Kokomo, IN, and am well familiar with WWKI. I worked for the founder and owner of WWKI, James Gregg for a few years( 2003-2005). I believe he sold off the station to a larger conglomerate of radio stations sometime in the 80's, and started other businesses. When I worked for him he was running a video production company. Point is, he was meticulous about backing up and making copies of audio and video recordings. He had a room that was FILLED with recordings from his tenure owning WWKI, many on reel to reel, or these large clunky tapes. Most were of the call in shows to the radio station, and there had to be a few decades worth on the shelves. At the time I had no interest or reason to go digging through the archives of the recorded shows, but had I known about this case, I would have certainly tried to locate the recordings of Rick Rainbow interviewing McDaniel. Sadly, James Gregg passed away several years ago, and I am sure much of his "Archive Room" wound up in a dumpster.

I mean you'd be surprised how often people are right about someone seeing something else. My girlfriend is a scaredy cat, so her imagination is pretty active, if she gets spooked she sees shit all the time. The likelihood that he saw some unidentified 3 legged creature that has never been seen by anybody else in history, is absolutely dwarved by the likelihood that he simply saw it wrong, or is straight up lying. Idgaf if some other random guys from his town that I don't know say he's honest, they can be lying too ffs. Who knows, maybe he's used to seeing a certain type of kangaroo and this one was different, maybe had some deformation or disease and lost it's hair, could look like a completely different creature to him, especially if the lighting isn't the best.

@@colecampbell1906 although I agree with you that this is the most reasonable explanation more often than not I also want to point out that the opposite is almost as likely. I think that it`s a natural reaction for people to disbelief stories of this sort even if they`ve witnessed it themselves. And when it comes from some person you never met the most sane conclusion would be that they are full of s**t. However when you actually think about it 99% of the time there is no reason anyone would do this. The most common line of reasoning is that someone made up a story in order to make some financial gain or become famous but it`s really kinda weird that this is such a usual concept since it almost never results in this apart from a handful of cases (can`t even think of such). By telling stories about paranormal/supernatural stuff you basically doom yourself to a lifelong of mockery and being outcast socially - you can not only loose your lifelong job but also risk to be shunned by your closest friends and even your family. Getting into legal trouble is also very likely. I just don`t see how anyone with more than average intelligence may think that this is a good idea.
And in regards to misidentifying something - speaking from the position of someone who has witnessed stuff that is arguably equally unusual as the creature in this story - when you see s***t like that if it`s the "real" deal there wont be any room for doubt. Your brain instantly sets your body into panic mode so to say. It`s not exactly fight or flight mode but you just KNOW that you are seeing something that is not natural.
I`m not claiming this particular story is legit tho but as I said I`m just pointing out that the possibility of stuff like this being true is actually more likely that we`d usually think.

      @Octoberfurst 2 роки тому +26

I agree. When he first mentioned the kangaroo theory I thought that sounded very reasonable. Kangaroos can have gray fur--although it is often a reddish-brown. Plus the tail can look like a third leg in the dark, its arms look short and their eyes can reflect light. (Although I don't think they would look pink but I am not sure.) So my first thought was that is was an escaped kangaroo. But, like you said, the witness had been to Australia and had seen kangaroos in the wild. So how could he mistake a kangaroo with the hideous creature he claimed he saw? That makes no sense. Plus he said he shot it at almost point blank range and the creature just turned and bounded away. Kangaroos are not bullet-proof! So who knows what that thing was?

At first I thought maybe I was looking at the Denver demon because this footage is from denver, but no matter how much I wanted it to be the Denver demon I couldn’t get over the fact that this thing appeared to either have a tale or some kind of grass hopper back legs, but I kept looking for the other back leg and it never showed up in the footage so I assumed it was a tail. Then I found your amazing channel and boom I almost fell out of my chair. The girl I spoke with said the thing was constantly scratching at her door, so she grabbed her night vision camera. She was ballsy enough to check outside for it and to everyone’s surprise it was gone in an instant. This lines up with this account of the creatures ability to jump and cover huge distances. Judging from the creature standing by the door she estimated it was roughly 4 ft. Only major differences I see when compared to Denver demon is that this thing has no visible mouth with sharp teeth or eyes the size of flashlights. If you see this message please contact me I want to send u the footage. Btw I’m also an artist/animator which is partially how I’ve become fascinated with cryptids and your channel.

The whole "mistaken identity" BS is bothersome to me because most of the time, at least when it comes to sasquatch, the skeptics are like "Oh, you just saw a bear." Sorry, but bears do NOT match the descriptions given by people who've managed to get a glimpse of a sasquatch that is out in the open. If it was 90% concealed and all you could see was hair on something that was big hidden in the forest brush, then sure, mistaken identity can be had there. But out in the open with a clear view of the thing's face? No way in hell you're mistaking that.
That is assuming witnesses are telling the truth about what they saw, if they saw anything... and I'm inclined to believe at least some of them actually did.

What strikes me about this one is how unique and unusual the creature was. If someone wanted to make up a sighting for attention, they probably wouldn't have been so specific about how unlike anything anyone has ever reported was. They would have just had a typical bigfoot sighting, or a ghost, or a grey alien, etc if they were making it up, because there would be no reason to make the creature more complex if you were just lying about the whole thing. But this thing is so disturbingly weird and described so specifically, that it really feels like a real sighting just on that alone.

Ironically, half of us were Sweetins and the other half were Sweetens due to some confusion on the part of the local doctor when he wrote my dad’s birth certificate. My grandmother Leota Sweeten was the Postmaster in Ina for a while in the 70’s. My great grandparents were Taylors and also lived in Ina by the elementary school. My brother and I spent time there in the summertime in the late ‘60s through the late 70’s and during that time heard the stories about the Spring Garden Ape, another mysterious creature that was spotted in Sesser, etc. Simpler times…

I always get a kick out of these skeptics. A lot of encounters seem to happen with hunters with cryptids. A lot of these hunters know virtually every sound, track and animal that is in a certain area. These hunters are experts in the field that they enjoy doing. But for some reason, these hunters have no idea what a bear is. Something screams a weird scream or leaves an unrecognizable print yet somehow it is still a bear.
It would be the same thing if I went to these skeptics places of work and told them that what they physically held in their hand was not a pencil, but a stapler. That they must have been confused and rattled to think that stapler was a pencil. Some of these skeptics seem to be nuts and have no common sense.

As I walked through the old clear cut I saw my deer, antlers and all. Until I got within 6 feet of the deer it slowly morphed into a on oblong granite boulder that was kinda deer shaped. @@oneoflokis What's the point? Most people that don't sleepwalk through life have noticed high strangeness on more than one occasion, so it isn't a warning they need. Practical advice maybe, but if they don't know the game is afoot by now, they never will.
And I have zero need for some form of validation; I know the reality of my experiences, what I've seen and felt. I'm not frightened or in need of consolation or protection. And another story or two from some 70 yo geezer isn't going to tip the scales.
Besides, I've watched this escalate from a few hysterical reports on the third page of some weekly paper to National Inquirer and then to serious research. This isn't going away.
Because it's growing bolder every day, logic says the bubble will burst from the strain at any moment. Even at my age, I think I'll be around to see it happen, that's how close it feels and appears to actually be. These things aren't even trying to be stealthy any more. The dark and lonely road has become a Phoenix freeway.
My main curiosity is to the how. Exactly what protocols govern such a thing as two civilizations meeting? Will we show up with armed soldiers like the old Japanese Godzilla movies? Will we appoint Cheech and Chong as Terrestrial Ambassadors, to soften our image a little bit? Would Bill Nye the Science Guy be able to understand them better, or maybe Max Tedmark?
And if they are here for slaves and sex kittens, instead of conversation, Arnold has already left in the "Choppa", and Segorny Weaver can't even use an exoskeleton anymore, so what the hell could we do about it?
Me, I'm buying shares in Orville Redenbocker and getting a better recliner. This may be a hell of a show. My only problem is which group to root for.

You're obviously interested in such fields/channels: or you would not be here on the comments! 🙂
      Don't be so lazy...
As to "sleep-walking". I am both a believer in, and a long time student of the paranormal. Plus, I am a Neopagan. But I can honestly say, *I have never yet personally experienced anything of true high strangeness* , despite being a believer.
But then: *I haven't spent much time wandering around the woods of America* ; nor any woods. 😏 I haven't spent time overnight at haunted houses, nor on ghost hunts at old castles. I used to belong to CUFORG, my local UFO research group in Cornwall, UK.. But financial problems and then health problems in the early 2000s put paid to my going out on skywatches.
These days, I don't even have a car: I don't travel, and am strictly armchair.

No, not Covid, hell, I haven't seen a neighbor or been anywhere since the 1st of July, so my social distancing is working. (Yes, I got both shots, I said I was a curmudgeon, not an idiot.)
But strangeness loses too much in the retelling. How to explain a forest trail that has subtly changed from the last time, and now WANTS you come down into the valley?
