I think if you want a less stiff finished product, try using a lighter stabilizer (fusable interfacing), or if you don’t have stabilizer, a piece of lightweight fabric and glue would work too. Since this is improvised project, just throwing out some suggestions.

Maybe the plain stitch is a:"running stitch". That's what my mother called it. Then there was zigzag and basting. That is all I remember on it.

Why do you need to pick up each piece? Just start at the beginning and quilt your stitch on top of each edge? Just wondering.
I want the stitching to be under to look more finished so I pick up the top pieces.
