    At 9:41 the sound of the snow beneath your boots tells me how cold it really is : ) Living in Minnesota these little cues tip you off. Even the snow is mad at how cold it is.

    Bucket with hot coals also warm up an engine very good. Germans used it using WW2 during the Russian winter.
    They developed synthetic oil as a result of that experience in Russia.

      Totally makes sense…. Warm up your food then your truck! 👌
      Yeah full synthetic oils for me…. These rangers have issues with the timing chain tensioners. So I only run synthetic in there. Make sure it’s going to stay consistent cold and hot….. interesting about the Germans developing it, never knew that.

I used Honda generator with a custom tote for protection from snow with a 3 plug outlet. 1 to the trailer to run lights and fans to keep heat moving around. The other 2 plugged into the Jeep block heater and battery blanket, worked great.

  • @rs1961

    Wow! Those subzero temperatures are scary cold. You taught me that in those temperatures you need to remove the battery to keep it warm and also to heat up your engine oil the way you did before trying to start the vehicle. Getting stranded in those temperatures without a working heat source could be deadly. Great video!

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I knew it was going to be cold... but... it was much colder then we expected. We thought we’d just make the best out of it.
      In those temps I would normally either keep the engine running all night or a trickle charge the battery to keep it from freezing. Since I couldn’t do that I figured I’d just keep it warm and then warm up the engine. Thanks for watching!

      @@waysoutbackA high quality Synthetic motor oil is your friend in sub -20 °C weather.

  • @jeffs7573
    @jeffs7573 2 роки тому +4

    Ok, I live in Alberta and the 3 weeks of cold weather we had, far colder than what you had, I never plugged in my truck once nor did I remove my battery to keep it warm. This is Canada, cold weather is always a given during winter, I was very surprised by what and why you did to warm your truck engine bay.
    I always use synthetic oils and I have the yellow top AGM Optima battery. You have to trust the vehicle to always start in cold weather by the oils you use and having a quality battery.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  2 роки тому +7

      Right on…. Love Alberta, I lived up in Grande Prairie for a few years working as a diesel mechanic.
      Here’s my thinking your right synthetic oil is a must also my battery is only two years old… but when I’m parked at home and my truck fails to start no big deal. When your camped out of cell service and a couple hours drive from help…. I like to make the odds in my favour it’s going to start. For about 10min of work I could almost guarantee I was getting out of there. 😁👍

    Getting ready to start a build on a used one. I am so excited. Had it over a year but never had the time. I love your set up. Am thinking of doing it but putting the shower and cassette toilet where the stove is and refrigerator top of counter in corner with water heater under, sink where toilet is and then stove where sink is. We have a propane heater for pop up. Using parts from pop up. Is a diesel better and safer? I have no idea what a diesel heater is. Would love to see how you store all the things you brought and needed. We camped in tents and pop up allot. Also, a little runaway square drop but found when husband got sick on trip no way to stand up created a problem getting in and out. So, son is buying it from us.

      Sounds like a good layout… I’d tape it out on the floor and even use old boxes. Sometimes I found that the space was different once you were in it.
      That’s a great idea using parts from a used rv..
      I’ll try to do more videos inside packing etc… no way around it though it’s tight in there 😁

    Im glad i found your channel! Love the camper setup, i would like to do something similar. How do you vent the trailer when you are cooking on the propane burner? Have you ever had an issue with CO inside?

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  2 роки тому

      Glad to have you along! When I built the trailer I put the vent almost right over the stove. I always crack the vent when cooking and run it, bringing in fresh air when I have my on demand hot water heater running. I have a CO detector that counts the ppm and it never gets off zero in the trailer.

    • @waysoutback

  • @lifeisgood141
    @lifeisgood141 Рік тому

    Do you even need stabilizers on a small trailer? Maybe on the front. I don't like the fold-up Solid Steps. It dumps dirt inside.

    • @waysoutback
      @waysoutback  Рік тому

      It all depends on how you build the trailer if it’s too light on the nose it will need a weight distribution hitch to keep it locked down.
      I hear you with the dirt inside. We take our shoes off before going up them, I have a small broom if needed… if I’m somewhere for awhile I dump water on them to clean before packing up. For the clearance, stability and nice wide treads I am willing to make that sacrifice. Everything seems like trade offs.

    • @waysoutback

      Good question! You need to make sure it’s fresh diesel bought in the winter.
      In these cold climates when winter hits they add anti gelling properties where you buy it.
      If you were to run summer diesel when it got this cold it would freeze up.
