  • Part 5 Printing the speedometer (instrument cluster)
    The paper that I used at the end for my speedometer is the HP Professional Laser Paper Glossy 130g. This seems to have disappeared, but 120g would probably produce the same results: amzn.to/2qeX09H

    im also planning to restore my motorcycle face gauge plate, now what paper/vinyl is best for motorcycle face gauge plate, because it is exposed to sunlight, and does light go thru it, because gauges have small light bulbs inside, so it is easy to see in night while driving, thanks.

      The paper that I used worked really well for that purpose, but the overall problem is that it is a combination with paper/printer. Not any paper will work with your available printer and the paper I used might not be too good for other printers. I would get a few similar papers (they are in the description of the materials video) and try a few print outs. The sunlight is not a problem, as the matt spray layer is supposed to be UV resistant. Now, how long will it survive in the direct sunlight is difficult to guess. Mine is in the car, so there is a bit of shade and it has aged well, no problems.
      The combination of paper and ink that I did here, does not allow any shine through, only the dials are lit. It really does a great job of blocking the light. That is with inkject printer and the 130g/m HP laser paper. Even though the paper is for laser printers it worked extremely well in my inkjet, it just needs a bit more time to dry.

    May I ask. What types of (printer) we need for print this cluster?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  2 роки тому

      I used HP deskjet 6110 (inkjet), but probably any decent inkjet printer will do with paper that does not shine through.

      I have described all the paper I have used in the 3rd video of this whole series (ua-cam.com/video/xUgjYQEcLGQ/v-deo.html). Nevertheless, I ended up using HP Professional Laser Paper 130 glossy. It is 130 grams, designed for a laser printer, but it worked surprisingly well with my inkjet printer. You may need to vary the amount of ink that it is dumped with the printer to achieve satisfying results. Mine was on the default settings, amount of ink was exactly in the middle on the scale for my printer. Hope this helps.

    Hi hello . I just want ask a few question . How you put gauge pictures to the computer ? And how to know the size of gauge like original gauge ?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Muhammad, I scanned the original cluster using a scanner. I scanned it with 300dpi, but 200dpi will also work. When scanning I did not use scale or crop, therefore the size is kept as A4. If you have an instrument cluster you can get the underlay and scan it, otherwise is a bit difficult with all the measurements. Hope this helps

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  5 років тому +1

      Not too sure what you mean by having a copy? You can design your own by using inkscape. You can scan any gauge and use that as a template.

    I want to do the same already scanned mine and design is ready for print but what is the best paper for the light shine through?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  2 роки тому

      Hi Bart, through all my tests I think it is a printer ink + paper combination. I used HP Professional Laser Paper Glossy 130g with my HP inkjet 6110. This paper was really spot on with the shine through. It was a while ago and I think this paper had disappeared, but probably the 120g would be also alright. Hope this helps.

    What would probably be the results if it was printed with vinyl?

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +1

      Hi William, it could potentially work, it is one of the few materials I did not try.

    • @EternalBeast97

      more molecules I will have to try it out.
      I don’t have a printer for vinyl but I can try to print one like you with paper and get the printed buy someone on eBay or something.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому

      @@EternalBeast97 If I were you, I would just get the vinyl and give it a go with the printer you have. It is worth a try to see if it can print on it. My best result was with laser paper and my printer is inkjet, not quite vinyl, but worth a try.

    • @EternalBeast97
      @EternalBeast97 4 роки тому

      more molecules yeah, I plan on getting a new printer because mine is broken and will get some paper you recommended.
      But I’ll have to see where I can get vinyl like that so I can print on it.
      Edit: would you recommend getting some vinyl that’ll print out matte? So it won’t be glossy and cause too much reflection/glare when in the car?
      Edit: would you recommend some hp brochure paper paper of 150g? It’s glossy and has pretty good reviews when printing, I can’t seem to find the paper you used. Doesn’t seem like they have it anymore.

    • @moremolecules
      @moremolecules  4 роки тому +1

      @@EternalBeast97 If you are getting a new printer, perhaps a laser printer would be better than an inkjet. I did not have an access at the time to a laser printer to do tests, but it generally would lay much more consistent ink. Yes, it was awhile ago and probably this paper has been replaced with something else. 150g is a bit too much, but it is worth a try, try to find something ~120-130g. 150g might block the light too much, but it could be alright. Yes, matte would work as long as the details are printed good.

    • @moremolecules

      Hi Slawomir, I disagree with this. Inkjet printers in their majority will always beat a laser printer on quality and especially photoquality. The laser printers that can do this quality are way, I mean way too expensive for the ordinary person.
