What a wonderful musician and bandmate to Brian, Freddie and Roger! Deacy will forever be a huge part of one of the greatest bands of all time, QUEEN! Such a private and lovely man who now enjoys his family and life out of the spotlight. Well done John, you will forever be remembered and loved by millions. Thank you for all the glorious music!

It did, i was lucky to get to know John's right hand man when they were on tour. I had met Wal when i was working on security on other shows. He was a top guy & said John had been devastated by Freddies death, i think he said at one stage John had said "Thats it, Queen is finished!" ... i think he was right, no one can follow freddie!

    Talking about John Deacon
    Freddie Mercury:
"John is the anchor of the band." ('70s)
"If God forsakes us now the rest of the group won't do anything unless John says it's all right."
"He's sort of quiet, lots of people think that. Don't underestimate him, he's got a fiery streak underneath all that. I talk so much anyway, he like to let me do all the talking. But once people crack that thin ice, then he's alright. (You can never stop him talking then)." (1976)
    Brian May:
"John's got a good business mind. He also has a complete sense and understanding of rhythm and how rock and business work together." ('80s)
"John, too, the archetypal quiet bass player - he can be incredibly considerate and inexplicably rude, make someone curl up and die with a couple of sentences. He's very strange, but he's the leader on the business side, studies the stock market, understands the deals." ('90s)
"Well, John was always into funk and always liked sparseness and tight drum sounds and just funky music. He liked R&B and black music, and he only kind of suffered rock and roll because he was in a rock and roll band [laughs]. He's a great bass player, I think much better than people realize. He's very inventive and very lyrical, but also very funky." (1998)
    Roger Taylor:
"We thought he was great. We were all so used to each other, and were over the top. We thought that because he was quiet he would fit in with us without too much upheaval. He was a great bass player too - and the fact that he was a wizard with electronics was definitely a deciding factor,"

The thing that always impressed me was that he was such a great family man. I may be wrong but I think he married his wife in the early 70’s who he is still with & he has 6 children. For someone with a rock band in the 70’s that is quite impressive. You didn’t speak about that at all.

Deacon was always such nice guy and so shy. He would come out of his shell privately due to Mercury being his champion.
Deacon looked up to Mercury. Partly due to the fact that Freddie protected him and helped him with his anxiety in performing and dealing with such incredible fame and its pressures. Freddie also encouraged him to write songs. Deacon was beloved by his band members.
Deacon considered Freddie his best friend and when he died it devastated Deacon so much he never recovered from his grief and depression over it. One day shortly after Freddie's death Deacon said he needed some time off to deal with things and never came back. He did sometimes step in and help perfroming with Brian and Roger but, never on a permanent basis.
Brian and Roger understood this. They knew how deeply the death of Freddie effected him.

The band was already named Queen before John joined. They had 3 other bass players with the name Queen before John. Freddie had written a song called My Fairy King around 1970/71, there's a line in it that goes 'mother mercury, look what they've done to me, i cannot run, i cannot hide'. The mother in the song was freddie referring to his own mother and therefore changed his surname to Mercury

I don't know if John Deacon was the greatest bass player ever, as you suggest, but he is certainly one of the most intelligent.
I've played bass for almost 50 years and I guess I know a bit about it for that reason. John Deacon is a brilliant bass player who doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He was never flashy or showy and shunned the limelight.
Technically he is excellent and his creative skills are outstanding. But then he is a good all round guitarist too. He has a very melodic style and everyone knows his bass riffs, from Under Pressure to Kinda Magic, Dragon Attack, Somebody to Love, etc.
Is he the greatest bass player ever.....well, I don't know. There are many great players from John Entwistle to Jaco Pastorius. They are all great and John deserves a place amongst them
