After the Turbulent Displace on the Sun Comp, while he talked about his Heat Plugin, I added this which looked somewhat similar. --> 1. New Solid (white), pre-compose (named Steam), leave this comp above Sun. 2. Open new comp, Fractal Noise on the white solid. 3. Fractal Settings - Small Bumps, check 'Invert', contrast = 130, brightness = 1, evolve 'time*200' and animate sub offset upwards as Andrew did earlier. 4. Back in main comp, create new Adjustment layer and put it below Steam comp (but above Sun Comp), set TrkMat to " Luma Inverted Matte "Steam"". 5. Effects> Fastblur 120 on Adjustment layer. This added a bit of a Steamy surface/heatblur effect, looks great on mine.
I was having trouble with the glow placement. I managed to get the glow behind the sun to work but then the one in front would still stay behind. I decided to start over and since Im using this for a "whole sun" (not just the top half) I didnt "zoom in" with the camera. I dunno how you pulled the sun down when you zoomed in but that seems to be the issue. I know you right click to zoom in, but when you pulled the image down it appears after effects acts a little funny with the extra glows.
Try seeing if your layers are in the proper order, specifically, where is the Adjustment Layer? I'm a noob at After Effects as well, but try to see if that works because it works in Photoshop.
I had the same exact problem. What i did is created a new layer called inner glow like the other glows and did the same exact process but this time on top of the star map layer...
Hey, i was having same problem here today, i place the duplicated nº3 glow on top of star map but nothing happened... still looking like it was in the botton with the others, what i did was, i turn the 3d layer option off than on again and it worked, it show up just like in the video, i had to reposition a bit, but it worked. i hope it works for you.
Anyone who has problems getting the glow layer under the Star map, lock the Glow layer and move the star map on the z-axis towards you (click and hold on the blue dot of the 3d axis in the center of the star map an drag it to the right)
Just figured that out by looking at the top view now after being frustrated for a while, but now the star layer appears to have square edges like its not a screen layer. SO odd!! hopefully i'll figure it out. This tut goes way too fast and changes settings back and forth several times. arg. lol. But still thankful!
To get some cool flares, incorporate the 3D light rays tutorial with a null in the centre of the sun and a radial blur coming from it, and drop a curves adjustment on it with heavy contrast so the rays only emit from the really bright areas.
Great tutorial. I've been wanting to add more organic effects to my AE jobs, and I can see fractal noise is going to be a big player. Thanks for the insight. Love the quality of your work, your tutorials, and your humor. Best AE series on UA-cam!
the most importent and crazy thing is, that it's without any 3rd party plugins, I mean this just shows that after effects has far more possibilities than we ever have thought and Andrew just shows one of the crazy things you can do with after effects for free! thats freaking amazing and I thank you so much
If you get an error with the expressions "value+lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.toWorld([0,0,0]),position)[0]" After Effects auto changes toWorld to to-World. Just change it to toWorld and it will work.
For those who get an Error while copy and pasting the expressions ... try to write the first expression down but don't copy and paste it... then when you wrote down the first expression .. you can copy this one and paste it at Y and Z. This helped me :) I hope you could understand me ^^"
For those who have an issue with the rotation expressions, there is supposed to be a space between value+lookAt and (thisComp... This fixed it for me and i didn't get anymore syntax errors
Stoked to try this tonight. Andrew would you consider doing a workflow tutorial? I feel like I'm not alone in being a noob who just compiles everything in After Effects and completely avoids Premiere. Which works alright I guess, but I can see how it is limiting.
At 14:46-ish you were talking about animating the fractal noise upwards and you said you could keyframe it. But then you deleted the keyframes and did SOMETHING, then said the other thing I did was turbulant displace. Something in there got cutout that explains how you got the noise to move upwards without keyframing. Would love to know what that was/is.
Andrew is the man. Many have tried and nearly all have failed. I always have a blast doing these. I learn more from him than the 2 million others.... "Put 65 for the velocity and 25 on the opacity". NEXT! , yea but why and what else can we do from that point or done differently for a more interesting result? you Learn nothing. I guess that's why Andrew gets the big jobs and pwns the Nab event.
OMG. I did it. But all those flames - they are made with rather different settings than as you show on the video. Had to spend a couple of hours to find some solution that could be more or less closer to your final result.
That was an awesome tutorial. Avery time I get my hands on something like this I can't understand how do these cool tutors figure these things out... Thank you.
value+lookAt(thisComp.activeCamera.toWorld([0,0,0]),position)[0] After Effects warning: syntax error Exspression disabled.
dasciuri value + lookat (thisComp.activeCamera.toWorld ([0,0,0]), position) [0] After Effects warning: syntax error Exspression disabled. how to fix it?
Hi, I was following this Tutorial Step by Step till postion 10:35 minutes. After I created the the 3D Glow layer, after I put it under the Star layer, I was NOT able to get the Star Layer on top of the Glow after "Auto-Orient" => Orient Towards Camera" . Video Copilot : Please help. I read comments about this, but I do not know how to get the glow really behind the Star Map. May be I made somewhere a stupid mistake. Thanks for helping.
Hi there. I am having issues with the white solid (glow min.10:07 of the tutorial). When I make it a 3D layer it changes position and it is transversally inside the sphere. Where am I wrong? Thanks and congratulations for your tutorials
Thx For the Video as new to Ae this was easy to follow and learn alot.. will look to see what else i can create with this and see if i can merge a few things..
Andrew your my man, you do an awesome job. my only push back would be that in some of your steps you do not explain how your doing what you are doing. example for the expressions part your not telling us how you brought up the expressions notepad for us to copy and paste it. Im still knew to after effects but i am progressing and watching your videos truly help me. so if you could walk us through your videos with a little more of step by step's that would be perfect. thank you Andrew.
I knew this included some animated fractal noise, I used something similar to create the effect I used for TrekCore's title and ending cards. You can kinda see it here: TrekCore Interviews DS9's Casey Biggs
great tutorials. at 7:04 -7:05 where he talk about the issue with the sphere that can be fix, I believe he call it "pulling issues" could have heard it wrong (apologies if I did) how do I fix that issue with the pulling. Thanks
@Video Copilot Thank you very much for your tutorial!! I was able to create a planet in Adobe After Effects! I know that the quality isn't the best .. but for me as a beginner .. i'm happy with my result ^^
Cool tutorial but two thirds into I received: This project contains expression errors: error 1 of 3; next my sun went white. I checked the expression several times against yours, they are the same. So sad to not see my Sun finished. :(
At 11:40 I follow the steps for the inner glow but after adding the subtract to the Mask 2 even when I adjust the feather nothing seems to happen. Have any suggestions?
15:02 I was just doing the " TURBULENT DISPLACE " thingy and then you said " Shoutout to Ryan Connolly for making that a household name " I bursted in laughter.
Followed the tutorial up to 9:04. Why does my planet remain flat while using the orbit tool when yours rotates? I've auto orientated it which fixes yours. My planet doesnt 3D rotate anymore, it stays flat to the camera.
you can also simulate the heat distortion effect with a simple trick: duplicate the Sun layer, usa an gaußian blur effect, create a solidlayer with an turbulant noise effect (play with the settings) and use this layer as a luminanz-mask for the duplicated sun layer. done.
Everyone who has a problem when making the torch 3D.. right click on the torch layer in the SUN composition > Transformation > Auto-Orient > Orient towards camera. YOU WELCOME.
Problem at 10:20 for me ... cant switch the first Glow-Layer to 3D, to be more precise: I can set the Button but this will not switch the layer to 3D - Layer - Transform - Auto-Orient is done the way it is said and shown. Can some 1 help me?
I dont understand how he can be so creative to use so many tools to create one result. Ahh i have so much respect for people like this!
Kevor Studios
Because he's secretly a god! Lol
Its awesome that you began to make regular tuts. Keep going!
Watching this in 2024 and this still amazinggg !! Can’t wait to see what you have for us ! 🎉
After the Turbulent Displace on the Sun Comp, while he talked about his Heat Plugin, I added this which looked somewhat similar. -->

Love watching his tutorials. This guy is a freaking motion graphics genius.

I just started this tutorial and Im having the exact same problem. Its like it disappears when its at different angles. Fuck you after effects!
I had the same exact problem. What i did is created a new layer called inner glow like the other glows and did the same exact process but this time on top of the star map layer...

The glow part was a game finisher for me....
What a great tutorial! And great humor within the first minute in typical Andrew Kramer style
Great tutorial! Also, even before you gave the shout out to Ryan, I started singing the Turbulent Displace song XD
I know how you feel :D
TURBULENT DISP:ACEMENT! TURBULENT DISPLACEMENT! :D
Anyone who has problems getting the glow layer under the Star map, lock the Glow layer and move the star map on the z-axis towards you (click and hold on the blue dot of the 3d axis in the center of the star map an drag it to the right)
+Hadeseffect Thank you LOL, that was really frustrating.
THX MATE!
Nope, that didnt work for me :(

@@sean.sullivan got this problem now, did u figure it out?

dang thats a damn fine idea there

Everything Video Copilot puts out is beautiful. You guys rock. You rock, Andrew Kramer.

Every time I set out to create a cool effect, I do search and low and behold, Mr. Kramer has already done it. And better. Arrgggh!
"We get the knowledge,...they get skin cancer"lolol I immediately thumbs up'ed and sub'd \m/
did exactly the same! lol
my god that cracks me up.
For those who get an Error while copy and pasting the expressions ... try to write the first expression down but don't copy and paste it... then when you wrote down the first expression .. you can copy this one and paste it at Y and Z. This helped me :)

This fixed it for me and i didn't get anymore syntax errors
helped me so much, was stuck on after effects trying to make a sun and this was my savour
This is truly awesome! Thanks for the hard work and the willingness of sharing your knowledge and experience.
You've done it again Andrew...beautiful work!
For 2019 users, apply Fast Box blur instead of Radial Fast blur to ensure no clipping :)
I'm addicted to your channel man.
Just awesome and amazing how quickly you put it all together. Thanks for posting.
Alright, bud. I'm sold. I'll learn freakin after effects now. This info is too good to pass up.
Stoked to try this tonight.

with every tutorial you show possibilities of AE become more and more wide...
thanks.
VitaminD ;)
You're the best Andrew! Thank you for your FANTASTIC tutorials!
OMG. I did it. But all those flames - they are made with rather different settings than as you show on the video. Had to spend a couple of hours to find some solution that could be more or less closer to your final result.
Awesome stuff Andrew! Testing this out first thing tomorrow at the office :) Thanks for great inspiration and tips!
It was about time you made a new sound pack, thanks!
haha yes! this is the most sun i gotten in weeks! Great tutorial btw, looking forward to more of your tutorials.
Your lessons seem to be from the gods! I studied at your site!
Andrew, you are good at what you do - amazing designs.

Excellent tutorial as always!
This tutorial is really great! !! I made something like a scene from a movie.

you are always so much resourceful Andrew, thank you so much for the video.
Here in Italy it's 2.10 a.m.
This is probably the best sun in a long time XD

Great tutorial. Thank You so much for Your work!
9:49 Inadvertent Cylon Base Star reference. Great vid. Very helpful.
The king's After Effects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thx For the Video as new to Ae this was easy to follow and learn alot.. will look to see what else i can create with this and see if i can merge a few things..
I like Tutorials w/o other plugins .. keep doing this! :)
thank you so much for this tutorial its helping me learn after effects and really get the the knowledge of the effects
U r always awesome ! :) :D
wooh that was hard but crazy cool effect! thank u!
So cool !!!!!!!I'll try this effect in one of my videos. Thank you
if anyone has a problem getting the glow layer right just copy the transform contents of the star map layer and paste them to the white solid layer
Andrew Kramer knows after effects more than Adobe itself!!
I'm with you...The night time is the right time.
Awesome tutorial. Thanks so much guys!
Learned so much! Thank you Andrew!
I like the torch layer!!
Wow, was more shocked by new SFX library adverted. This smoke over title @ 30:28 so epic. Maybe tutorial or advice how to make this?
Kramer& You best! I like you tutorials
Awesome tutorial as always Andrew :)

Ryan Watson i think maybe with masks on the poles and then feather it out?!
@Video Copilot

This finally worked for me. I had 3 ccsphere effects on one fractal. Apply it to the main layer in comp only.
Seriously awesome tutorial! Thank you!
i love learn from your video, thank you so much
AAAAHHHH! THIS WAS AWESOME! I'M SO THANKFUL! Thanks!
I would absolutely go to see Andrew Kramer do stand up. Hilarious and awesome! Hilariously awesome!
very cool tut, THANKS!!
Amazing tutorial mate, great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We get the knowledge "
Right !!
Think I'm going to give this a shot!
Can you do a tutorial for Title which comes at 30:28 for motion pulse? Mainly for the part where the assets move with the text shape. Please.
If anyone has trouble with the blur getting cropped in 10:53, uncheck the "repeat edge pixels"
Awesome bro.... Kramer President !!!!
VIDEO_COPILOT and SIR Andrew Kramer...ROCK!!! 3rd Rock from the Sun :-p
Yes yes yeeeeeeeeees, universe and after fx r one, mr cramer u r awsome, just do more stuff about space....!
you can also simulate the heat distortion effect with a simple trick: duplicate the Sun layer, usa an gaußian blur effect, create a solidlayer with an turbulant noise effect (play with the settings) and use this layer as a luminanz-mask for the duplicated sun layer. done.
Love your work. Exellent tutorial
This is art ! :)
Awesome tutorial, but I have a question. Is there a way I can render this with a transparent background?
Awesome tutorial.
Also 0:44, as a programmer I can relate.
Everyone who has a problem when making the torch 3D.. right click on the torch layer in the SUN composition > Transformation > Auto-Orient > Orient towards camera. YOU WELCOME.
I am having a problem where the internal glow wont go over the sun no matter where i place it... How do i fix this?
Would love a video combining the fractal noise with E3D obj. I watched the other Star Trek video but it's about a 3 second part about it.
I love Video Copilot. and Andrew Cramer😜👍
Problem at 10:20 for me ... cant switch the first Glow-Layer to 3D, to be more precise: I can set the Button but this will not switch the layer to 3D - Layer - Transform - Auto-Orient is done the way it is said and shown. Can some 1 help me?
i have the same problem... glow-layers dont switch like "star map" when i change Auto-orient...
At 9:34 you drag it down. How do you do that? I am trying to drag the layer down and it goes all over the place... it doesn't just drag straight down.
