Today i visited Coldstones Cut and Malham Cove. Both of these iconic places in The Yorkshire Dales. Join me whilst i explore these locations and share some history on them.
I dropped my pencil case on that limestone pavement on a school field trip. It's still there, somewhere down a crack. Wonderful scenery and memories of that place. Never disappoints. Thanks. x
I don't know why your reply makes me so happy 😶 I just kinda wonder , given the fact that I am old lady now , how much shit did I drop on so many school trips ?? Historians of the future might be baffled 😶 Somewhere out there is a rusty door locker key 😶👋❤️
So weird, I was only there on Wednesday (22/9/21) Most people do the walk along from the village, Malham to the base of the rockface. It's very weird how the water from above seeps through the rock and comes out at the base. During exceptional rainfall, the lake at the top, called Malham Tarn overflows from the top and it becomes a proper waterfall. Literally only happened once in living memory for the locals of Malham. Last time was during Storm Desmond in 2015. Before that, the 19th Century and possibly 1720. The area became more popular after the limestone, crazy paving section at the top was used as a filming location in the last Harry Potter movie. Edit: Gotta visit the Brimham Rocks next, just the other side of Pateley Bridge, from your visit to Coldstones Cut.
Your videos are simply made, and yet very entertaining and interesting to watch. I could watch them for hours without getting tired. Oh, and the quality of the cameras and drone is just perfect for UA-cam, no need to stress to much on fancier equipment. Keep up the good work!
Educational, intriguing, enlightening and utterly engaging as ever Jack! Yet another area to visit for the bucket list, the comments your vids provide are a goldmine too! Love the edit - please don't tell me it's also you on guitar for the sound track!! 😉
haha no Charlie it's definitely not me on the guitar :D but that would be a neat complement to the videos if i wrote my own music. I certainly wouldn't have to worry about copyright then lol
Great video, I'd just like to say please don't pull up the rocks and leave them in a different place upside down. Show more respect by putting it back as best you can. Thanks
One time when I went to Malham with the family, we watched people practicing for the upcoming free climbing championships there. Absolutely terrifying to watch, but very impressive. I think the fastest ascent was about 5 minutes from bottom to top! It looks like you missed Janet's Foss, just down the valley with its cave behind the waterfall (when it has been raining - right now it's likely to be dry enough for easy access). In spring, the valley leading to it is full of delicious wild garlic, so smells amazing! Go back in 6 months. Also, the 'h' in Malham isn't pronounced, it's Mall'm, like Callum. Also like Balham: ua-cam.com/video/bVCkvheedWA/v-deo.html "Malham, Gateway to the North!"
As someone who lives in Yorkshire (and flies a drone) this whole area is very under-appreciated and I love that fact that you make such amazing content about such an amazing place!
Thanks for checking out my new stuff and your kind words mean a lot to me! Still finding my way with the editing stuff always learning you know how it is
Malham Cove looks like Lovely place. I expect I'll never experience it IRL. Would love to hear a bit more of YOUR commentary about the history of the sites you visit.
Your pronunciation of Malham took me for a spin haha. It's an amazing landscape around there, and definitely do the circular with Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss on the way round.
You've set an expectation that any future content you put out is of great quality. Props to you brother for the work you've done so far and I hope you enjoy the journey ahead.
Hey Tracy! Yeah this was Malham Cove at the end there. Spectacular place. I was kind of freaking out when the sun came out and hit the cove wall whilst i was filming it haha!
Cheers Alex really appreicate you checking out my other stuff! I am planning for more Strid content but i want to go bigger and better with the ideas there. I'm really enjoying taking the camera out with me wherever i go though it helps me explore places with finer detail!
@@jackasnacks I’m not from Britain mate, if it helps today’s video was awesome, you showed me an awesome place not many people talk about. I had to confess that my taste is corky but hope my suggestion help with something 🤙🏻
Its actually a life-size sculpture of the "family jewels" on a guy who spends hours scrambling on the banks of the Scrid, dunking various objects to the bottom‼️
Coldstones is wonderful. Beside the sculpture you have the beautiful view. Works like that enrich lives. Another great sculpture with a twist. This one didn't get the public's approval beforehand. The Charging Bull sculpture on Wall street was "illegally" placed by the artist. However, this sculpture was overwhelmingly accepted. Beauty wins the day. *Public artwork that I do have a problem with........ Graffiti spattering the city landscape (found in any city in the USA). I describe graffiti as ......UGLY-Criminal-Vandalism (except rare instances)
Looking over this landscape reminds me of the Fourth Doctor, exiting the TARDIS into yet another quarry filming location, "Oh, look. Rocks." I think it's a beautiful piece of art, personally! But then, I really love rocks.
Was great to see you in Malham Jack, its kinda my stomping ground if you will, its a truly beautiful & has plenty to offer. As many comments have stated already, you should definitely go back in summer, the walks are stunning, many waterfalls to admire, there's even the privilege of catering/cafe vans perfectly placed throughout the hikes (Great cuppa & sandwich ). Beautiful little Malham village, superb ice cream shop 😊. Lake District/ Cumbria is very close to my heart as Ingleton was a place of residence for about 7 years, Windermere, Barrow, Kirkby Lonsdale (known for Devils Bridge) Bentham both higher & Lower are all places i have friends. Kendal, Lancaster and Heysham are also amazing places of interest history wise also but I imagine you visit them often. Lake Coniston was a favourite camping holiday when growing up and I also kept up that tradition by taking my children there so they could enjoy everything I was lucky too 😊 Great video as always hun x
That cove is quite the geological feature, very cool. Personally I also liked the sculpture. Though found it odd that someone might call it an eyesore when it sits right next to freaking quarry! To each their own, etc. Any chance this quarry is the one where they found the petrified tree from your other video? I was thinking that the geology looked like the kind of ancient sediment layers that might produce fossils... (I mean, I took one (1) geology class a loooong time ago so 🤷🏻♀️ )
Thank you for the video. Enjoyed seeing the art installation. Earthworks are one of my favorite forms of art. Also enjoyed seeing more of the Lakes District. Cheers.
Are those ridiculously large stone walls in a grass landscape? Why, or interestingly, how? Seems like a lot of work to denote boundaries (of whatever kind)
This is random but you have a gorgeous voice/accent. I'm American and idk if I've ever heard an accent quite like yours. Also I had never heard of these places! Thanks for the video. The art installation is really cool :)
Great vid. I used to live just down the road from coldstones. Usually an evening dog walk and great sledging in the snow. Defo do Brimham Rocks next time you're in Nidderdale. Go in the evening and you'll mostly have it to yourself. 👍 Guiscliffe woods too as there are some old cup and ring stone markings which are interesting.

Great video. A quick note to other people interested in visiting Malham Cove and flying a drone there: Malham Cove is often used by peregrines to rear chicks. Best to avoid drone flying there during the rearing period.
Thanks Leoht, didn't know about that. What time of year is the rearing period? Something i'd like to keep in mind. I did see a bunch of birds flying about but they looked like crows to me
The sculpture is a great idea poorly executed. It does look like reproductive organs and the passageways are far too narrow. If it becomes popular you won't be able to move and a single wheelchair would block the whole passage.
Yeah it is definitely a single file system as you go to the view points. I think they have hosted multiple events here so it would be interesting to see how they work it on days where there are a few hundered people there at one time
