My ex's family were like that... She wanted me to meet her brother and his wife for Christmas... They asked her "what car does he drive? how big is his house? does he own his own business?" When she told them I was a health care assistant that helped people with autism, etc. they sharp came up with an excuse not to meet me. In their eyes helping the less fortunate was a complete and pointless waste of time and they couldn't see why anybody would stoop to such a "shitty job." We pretty much broke up about 2 months later because they "opened her eyes" as it were. Her family had to have the best of ALL their friends.. They'd buy expensive things and not even use them just so they could say they had the "slightly better model."

Visiting ones relatives is not of course normal in UK society. The only time you get together with the relatives is when one of them dies and then the rest of the family gather at the deceased person's house like a bunch of professional tomb robbers. That is the reality of family life in UK.
Western family life more like- and it’s been driven that way.

We were always round our aunties house's,grand parent's and even to this day still go to dinner with our cousin's regularly.
Drop my mom round to see her sister's and say hello to my elderly aunts.
