White / fair skin in a lot of countries is actually a sign of wealth, it goes back to the times when only poorer people worked outside in labour type roles, which tanned their skin. Fair skin meant they were wealthy enough not to work. You see this in a lot of cultures, I believe this underlying belief still lives on. Where I’m from in the UK, women would paint their skin whiter to show their privilege.

It's kind of sad, but I think it is kind of like this throughout Asia. I currently live in the US, but back in Pakistan, the fairness creams advertisements showed that boys will not like the girl unless she applied the fairness creams. My Indian friend said that they have advertisements of similar nature. I don't understand why is a particular skin colour deemed as attractive and not the other one. Probably there was some sort of joke in this particular advert which I didn't notice, but the way I see it, is that the lady wasn't happy with the guy being black so she decided to clean him and have a lighter complexion guy. I know that in Asia light and fair skin is considered pretty. They do a lot to be pale. In my country it’s the other way around, everyone is pale and wants to have a nice tan.
