  • An analog synth paradise.
Whether he's making techno for Berlin warehouse parties or atmospheric soundtracks for installations made in collaboration with his partner Nathalie Djurberg, Hans Berg is a expert at producing with hardware.
We visited the Swedish artist at his Berlin studio, where he showed us how he combines organic with electronic sounds as well as giving us a tour of his prized analog synths, including the vintage Korg Mono/Poly.

This guy is amazing. He clearly has no clue as to what he's doing, and frankly the music doesn't suffer too much for it. Sounds about the same as most of the other producer profiles. Sehr gut Herr Berg!

"Hans Berg is a expert at producing with hardware." I guess he could be an expert at producing without being an expert at synthesis. He could take a stab at making a patch, think "well that's ok, I guess, but I don't know how to do any better" and then expertly produce the unexpertly created patch into an expertly produced production!!

please stop with the extended shots of the musician's faces. I wanna see their setup and exactly how they're using it. Also work on your camera angles.

These videos always seem like a trailer for an actual video. Lots of enticing shots of trs cable / gear penetration and a constant, semi diegetic soundtrack, but no actual information of value.
Everyone says the same thing. "I started when I was a kid with a cheap keyboard, then one day things started falling into place. I don't think you should know too much about how this stuff works, just mess with it and have fun! Analog synths sound warm and out of tune."
Seriously, stop the status quo and delve deeper. Ask more from those you're interviewing. Congrats, you have the follow focus gear porn shots down. But truly, there is more information in a cellphone video if the information is insightful. Maybe it's no one's fault. Maybe it's just really hard for this culture to say anything at all.

Future Music have a load of of videos where a musician will explain how they made a track or three. They definitely go more in depth and will talk about their gear, where they got certain samples. I personally loved the four tet one because he has such tactility in his music and I wanted to learn about how he does it.
"one day things started falling into place. I don't think you should know too much about how this stuff works, just mess with it and have fun"
If you're looking for a more in-depth explanation about the creative process, I don't think you're ever gonna find it because whatever happens in the mind of the artist is actually too complex for them or anyone to articulate it, that's actually one the reasons its an art form. You just have have to do it and let the thing grow as it will or 'just mess with it and have fun'.

Same here- too many people obsessing over gear especially analog synths that have different character and sound "warm" but only can do so much

to be honest the problem is they use it all in the same way ... which is boring , but if u listen musician like quincy jones , herbie hancock stevie wonder etc the way they used it is amazing

its easy to get obsessed haha, I generally think that when it comes to modular there is very interesting sounds to be made but having the hardware changes your workflow and I personally find that I end up doing different things than I wouldn't with software plus its also nice not being completely focused on my computer

    • @AdnanAlsannaa

Can't really think of electronic musician who is not interested in Synths. Do you have examples?
All I can think of is Son Lux, which while they use synths a lot, they use more 'natural' or 'organic' sounds. Send examples :)
