Getting Dressed in Downton Abbey Fashion: Late 1910s-Early 1920s Wardrobe

- I’ve recently become enamored with the fashion of the late 1910s- early 1920s, specifically 1918-1921. It’s the type of clothing we all fell in love with in “Downton Abbey”. There’s something so stylish and wearable about it, even though it’s 100 years old. I can definitely see myself wearing these clothes for normal wear! I’ve never really been big into “vintage” clothing but this somehow strikes a balance between vintage and historical clothing.
It’s also a really fascinating time period full of incredible and fast-paced change. One can’t deny the parallels between the post-WWI era and our current times, from a worldwide pandemic to racially motivated violence as seen during the Red Summer of 1919. I hope that by looking back to this time period, we can see how much more work must be done in our own.
Other than the corset, which I will link to below, I created all of the patterns for the clothing myself. The undergarments consist of an envelope chemise, corset, petticoat, and camisole, as well as shoes and stockings. The dresses featured are a house dress, linen summer dress, and wool suit.

this era is so underrated and you ROCK it! 🪨
Hehe, hiiiiiiiiiii meme mom. Anyways totally agree with you. You pull this look off amazingly😍
Agreed! Grateful that you made this. :)
"Every historical wardrobe should start with accurate undergarments." So true! I just did a mens Victorian video and had to have the undergarments. The Edwardian era is one of my favorites too. Great video!
yay! Your 1910s wardrobe is so, so, lovely!
I LOVE that you showed so many examples! And those closures are just crazy! They got creative in that era, for sure.
I think the creative closures are one of my favorite parts of this era! I can't wait to do some evening wear and play with those closure methods!
@@TheCoutureCourtesan It's great until it's 100 years later, and you're trying to figure out how the damn dress was worn on a mannequin cause you can't tell the front from the back, and wait what is this strap for and why is there a hook there omg how did I get stuck inside the dress and why is there still a gaping hole over here?!?😂 jk...kinda...😂
This would DEFINITELY be me! 🤣🤣 I kept thinking, the only way I could survive is if I had my very own Anna Bates.
daywear from this is era is such a rare thing to see recreated when it's still so elegant and honestly would make such a great intro for people dipping their toes into historical dress. Especially those beautiful dresses. I'd 100% wear these.
Yes! Definitely more beginner friendly than some time periods and so wearable today!
This is why I'm looking into the 1910s for making my first historical-ish garments. I like the late 1890s and early 1900s but the silhouettes are intimidating and the lengths are too long as I prefer below the knee and shin length.
Absolutely fantastic and well informed (as usual). BUT....I’m having such a hard time concentrating because of your.........pile of amazing longbow arrows in the corner, lol!
LOL you can blame Mike...
I’ve been swooning over late 19teens fashion advertisements for almost two years now. Love getting to see the styles on a person!
So very beautiful. It brought me back to my early, early childhood when my grandmother would get dressed in just those undergarments befor putting on 50's styles! LOL She was just stuck in her time period, but it worked! She was always ramrod straight and smooth.
The hat was beyond adorable, although I think the house dress was the prettiest of the three outfits.
They certainly knew how to dress back then. I love seeing examples of clothing from that era because it gives me an idea of what my grandmothers wore when they were young ladies.
I still have little metal snaps on their original cardboard cards from the turn of that century. Being born (1971) to an older Mom (b. 1934) who was the child of really old Parents (b. 1874/1889). It intrigues me to see their daily dress style "come to live" in such informative videos. Showing your 😍beautiful creations. Truly love this👌🏻.
Just like me. I was born in 1971, my mother was born in 1928 and my grandmother was born in 1888. I love this era of clothing. When I was young I liked Victorian and my mother never understood why I liked ‘old fashioned’ stuff!
@@AntelJM oh my, your dear Mother was even older, then mine, when she gave birth to you. I totally understand why we both like "by gone times". Was your Mother the last/youngest in a longer line of siblings? (My Mom was the first & only child of my Grandmother and 5th child for my Grandfather - who had been widowed twice before. Never got to know my Grandparents). Is your Mother still around to share your interest & hobbies and are you able to listen to stories from her youth and her Parent's earlier life?
Ok, now I want a coat with embroidery and a muff. Like, seriously. How pretty and elegant is that?
This is a style/wardrobe I could easly could ware in modern daily life. Love it.
I would wear the house dress and the autumn suit a lot!
Wish these styles come back ! It is beautiful ❤
Three outfits! Like getting three scoops of ice cream instead of one. Your work is gorgeous. Thanks for being so generous.
I’m constantly amazed at how every period of clothing looks amazing on you! I’ve always thought 1910s fashions were a bit dowdy, but you make them look so chic. Love seeing how complicated all the fastenings are too. More please!
It is amazing how lovely women used to dress and wanted to present themselves. As a fellow I love all three outfits and the undergarments too. Then again I have always been a fan of vintage attire for the ladies. Ma'am, you certainly did a wonderful job with these outfits . 🙂
I love this era on you! This, and Tudor era make you look like you walked out of a painting. Absolutely love the wardrobe, especially the autumn suit!
Simply beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I would wear this in the 2021 era
I am LIVING for this! Hardly anybody recreated late 1910s fashions, despite the fact they are soooo pretty! Thanks for sharing, this was wonderful. I am excited for what you come up with next :)
That embroidery and ribbon work (is that what it is?) on the autumn ensemble is just gorgeous. So detailed and intricate!!
One of my favorite movies, Out of Africa, features costumes from that era and they are stunning! Of course, Meryl Streep can carry off any sort of fashion, as demonstrated in the movie, but you are no slouch, my dear! Beautiful!
Yey! This time period is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to fashion, it's so much fun! You've made some beautiful pieces :)
That Autumn suit is beautiful! The muff is a pretty and practical accessory .
That fall suit is gorgeous!
✨ pockets ✨
LOVED the fall outfit. I would SO wear that!
I love this style very mutch. Thanks for sharing. Did not know it was a pasific era til i came a cross your Chanel. 💗
My favorite fashion era!
I like looking at this cause my grandmother was born in 1895 and it makes me see how she was dressing although she was only 15 years old at this time she passed away when I was 18 yr. Old I am now 72 yr. old She was quite a lady she was a milliner She made hats She was always dressed up in a dress , hair earrings and all. She was a high society lady from Nebraska I miss her still😍
I need to learn this sewing and make historically accurate clothes to wear for each period of history I teach! You do amazing work!
I don't have the patience for sewing, but I would try at least once (with a historically-accurate hand crank or foot peddle sewing machine and hand sewing-thanks Bernadette Banner). I would love a historically accurate wardrobe of different time periods to help me get in the mod for writing each day, and of course, all the research it would provide! Samantha looks gorgeous in the Tudor and 1910s and '20s looks! I'm currently in a Tudor era phase and have binge-watched all her videos.
I adore all the button details from this era!! Everything here looks lovely, and so well made!
That trim😍, absolutely gorgeous!
Gorgeous. Love the summer outfit.
i just found this account and am currently watching every single video on it :)
Thank you so much! Welcome!
Hey! we were livejournal friends about a million years ago. I am so pleased to see you made the jump to youtube! I can't wait to go through all your videos and see what you come up with in the future

Hi there!!
I love seeing this era being represented!! Gorgeous!
Plus, all the snaps and innovative closures are so fun 😊
The summer dress is so cute!
Huzzah! How’d you know I started binging Downton again this weekend?
I wish you had a close-up of the embroidery/ trim of the autumn coat. It was beautiful!
4:40 ?
The late teens also had sheer blouses embellished with tons of lace!
All of these are so lovely, but that last one has my heart!
Love the embroidery on the suit!!
Da heck! This is the first youtubes video of yers I watched. HUHamazing! Your voice is ideal for this work.
0:57 Your kitty is so cute!!
OK that daytime dress is just so awesome, I love the piping the buttons the black-and-white scheme it’s just beautiful.
I, too, love the fashions from this period. In fact, I love the fashions of many other centuries. Not too keen on today's fashions, though.
Oh, how I wish I could sew! If I could, I would make my own clothes, too. Enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing. :)
Very lovely and talented lady .
Oh the suit!! My heart! 💗💗
Suddenly I'm a huge fan of an era of clothing I never previously gave a second thought! Your outfits look even more amazing than the fashion illustrations, and they just look so pretty-yet-wearable that I really want to sew them. Also, I am a fan of your very nice hat.
I edit with InShot too! Nice videos! 🤍
I love this era, the dresses are still beautiful! 😍
these are all STUNNING, but wow this is one of the few pieces of historical clothing that does actually seem like the undergarments would be irritating to go to the restroom in lol. altho tbf ppl wear rompers to this day and i just don't get those either 🤷🏻🤣
The late teens/early 20's look gorgeous on you! Love the slouchy silhouette!
love your vids, i have always loved this era ...i used to watch House of Elliot, basically for the look. i always loved their business troubles, and how they would be upset because they couldn't get the right buttons or something. i designed a line of clothing after this downtown abbey era in the nineties , just love it
Beautiful! That embroidery on the blue suit is amazing!
I love the style of this period!! And you wear it so well! Watching each look come together in this video, I'm transported directly to that time period, so cool and inspiring, I would love to make some of these items for myself 😊
I love the colour combo for the autumn outfit!
You look great in that outfit
The trim of that blue suit is GORGEOUS!!!!
LOVE the style of the dresses! Very practical and modern, but beautiful!
For years I thought my style focused around the 1940s but in recent years I have been pulled back to the 19teens ever so happily. Now to just make some pieces, the Rilla is in my stash just waiting on the right fabric and time to come along.
That last one is gorgeous!
Your whole wardrobe is amazing! Each outfit is better than the next! 😍😍😍
All the outfits were so gorgeous! x
Amazing clothes
I adore you and your channel!!!!
Oh my goodness!!! The decoration on that autumn outfit is incredible!!!! I will scour Instagram in the off-chance you put more pictures of it there! Your work is such goals!
Ahh this is my favourite period, this is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Please make more videos - I really love your channel!
My absolute favorite era of historical clothing!
There could be some pretty racy clothes-shedding film scenes set in this period, with all those snaps! 😂
Do snaps allow for an easier alteration of size?
That's a good question! They are much easier to move around than, say, buttons and buttonholes, but hooks and eyes are easy to adjust too.
Your velvet hat from the autumn suit is so cool!
I love these! Amazing!
The fall suit is my favorite
This is an amazing video and your creations are gorgeous! 1910s, especially the second half are my absolute favorites! Thank you for sharing this look into the period! I hope that you do more of this era.❤
That gingham housedress is beautiful! More "making of" videos please!
Oh my!! 1910’s is definitely my favorite decade, and the first I’m trying to tackle while learning to sew. Making a Rilla Corset now. Thanks for the video!!
Awesome! Good luck with your sewing adventures!
Beautiful! The first two is totally wearable now. It still has modern silhouette. Where did you acquire the checked linen fabric? It’s really beautiful and unique.
Burnley and Trowbridge
Simone Gillette
Thank you, Simone! I’ll have to check it out!
I love that you show more than one outfit.
I'm in love with all of these! It's my favorite era of fashion. Thanks for providing links to patterns!
"Oh snap!"
Me seeing those dresses using snaps.
My mother was a young teenager during the later part of this period! (Yes, I am that old!😂)
This is one of my favorite fashion period too! I shall stay tuned for more!
You look like Cora Crawley in your last look 😍
I absolutely love the gingham day dress!
speaking of downton abbey, was edith intentionally dressed horrendously by the standards of the time because my god, i dont care all that much for the fashion of that time but edith just killed me time and time again
Edith’s clothes in the first two seasons were a bit on the dowdy side at times but once she began her London life and started writing for the magazine, her costumes were amazing.
Edith's role in the beginning of the series was that of the overlooked/disregarded and jealous younger sister, who is in constant conflict with the smarter, more beautiful and sophisticated 'firstborn'.
So yeah, they intentionally put her in dowdy/unflattering clothes to emphasize that point and make the dynamic between her and Mary more believable.
If you haven't watched the whole show, I highly recommend doing so, btw. Edith especially goes from being the ugly duckling to becoming a radiant swan. Her character arc is very interesting and well done and her outfits in the later seasons are breathtaking.
Everything is so lovely, and you really could wear them out and about today!
Gorgeous as always! I’m glad you finally got on the UA-cam bandwagon!
I fully agree with your opinion regarding this style of clothing, they are beautiful I would like to obtain the pattern of the corset you are wearing.
The undergarments are so pretty I wanna dress like this 😭
Amazing! You've inspired me to make all the 1910s dresses now!
Very lovely indeed, and exactly the visual research I was hoping for. (I just saw a colorized & restored 1910 upward vent clip & didn't notice a petticoat. But, if the petticoat was calf height, then it would easily blow above the knees.)
You look great in that outfit,,
Very pretty tortie (and dresses of course)
Absolutely fantastic dresses. I am thinking you could get away with wearing them in today's time too. They look classy.
My Great Grandmother was a milliner during this time in NYC.
This was relaxing and informative to watch. Love it!
Just stumbled on your channel and I love it! Keep it up! You're super talented and I can't wait to see what other historical eras that you work on.
That gingham housewife dress 😍
Great video. I learned a lot. New subscriber!
I had always thought snaps were a more modern invention. Thank you for the video 😊
They were patented in 1885! Crazy!
