    just so everyone understands, not every performer who use in ear monitors playing with metronome or cues in their ear pieces, the number 1 use of IEMs are to replace the stage speakers so they can hear their own performance better, cause sometimes the place they were playing at has too much natural reverbs that make the stage speakers gets inaudible so bad

    Remember though that this is an example where the band is playing along to a click track to stay in time. The band/artist may be using other sounds not being played live by the musicians such as loops, samples, supporting tracks such as backing tracks/vocals.

    I use IEM’s for a balanced mix and convenience of less stage monitors, if any, and backline. Let the P/A do the work.

    An artist I manage just told me at a small venue she could barely hear herself or the band over the crowd. While that's a great problem to have an audience so into your performance, IEM's would have helped her and the band to hear themselves despite the crowd :-)

    Hey there! I had a question I can't find answered anywhere online. just saw a live show recently and was wondering if the singer can hear the audience? Like could the musician hear the audience roaring/cheering?
    Thankyou very much :)

      Hey! Thanks for the question! If we are using in-ears, sometimes we can and
      sometimes we have no idea what everyone is saying or doing haha! It all depends if the sound tech places a couple mics facing the crowd. If they do then they can put the crowd into our ears so we can hear which is awesome! Sometimes though that isn’t the case and is why you’ll often see artists pop out an ear on stage to listen to the crowd! Hopefully that helps! :)

    • @Gurofluff

      @ThatsMeHaileyB it helps so much! I think that Melanie Martinez must have the mics toward the crowd, since I just saw at a different concert she had to tell the crowd that since they weren't singing, and just screaming, that she couldn't hear properly. That must be such a strange experience!
      Thankyou so so much for taking the time to respond to me, you wouldn't believe me if theres no answer to this question elsewhere - no other musicians or techs, not even on reddit! Haha.
      Thankyou again ♡

    Everybody does something differentwith the in ears, a lot of metal bands, for example the drummer has a loud click track. Everybody else follows the drummer to stay in time. And everyone else has something different going on in their ears based on their own preference.

      they also make everything quieter, without ear protection you'll get hearing damage

    • @Ashtonklein-ln3xo

      not really a requirement, it's just a preference, the benefits are you'll get a consistent and isolated sounds to monitor your own performance and you can also add a metronome or cues that the audience doesn't supposed to hear. but some performer still prefer the the regular stage speakers for their own monitors cause it's just sounds more natural to their ears

    Does that mean that a guitarist cannot hear the whole band as the audience hears it? Each member hears only his parts, and maybe a metronome?

    • @EmmanuelB
      @EmmanuelB 7 місяців тому +1

      You can chose what you hear. Typically, you'll want the click and the cues loud enough to be heard over everything, but you want to hear yourself (obviously), be it your voice and/or your instrument, and any part that might help you be in tune and time.
      As long as it's going through a mixer, you can chose to have it or not in your IEM. Also, it's not 100% isolating you, so if you're not playing in a gigantic festival scene, you'll hear the drums and the crowd a bit.
      You can find a lot of videos of "what a hear in IEM". :)

    • @ThatsMeHaileyB
      @ThatsMeHaileyB  2 роки тому +7

      Yes totally!!! Drummers have something called a “talk back” mic that they can talk into to communicate any signals that the band should know. & only the band can hear it in their in-ears!! So yes they could totally let the artist know they see a fan with a great sign!!

    I know all about this but find it a bit desperate that musicians dont even need to remember their own songs anymore ..if you dont know where you are in your own song...well...

    • @laurenpelto325
      @laurenpelto325 Рік тому +12

      It's hard to know where you are in a song if an audience is screaming at you out of key and out of tempo, combined with echo and the general loud noise of the concert where you can barely hear yourself... I would say they're pretty important. Obviously they know their music... They're singing it

    • @Newmusicreview
      @Newmusicreview Рік тому +1

      @@laurenpelto325 well….Gigs and bands have been pretty successful over the years, I’m not arguing the principle, it’s all the cues, if you don’t know when your chorus is coming….

    • @priyankanarwade6321
      @priyankanarwade6321 Рік тому +9

      It's kinda like when u talk in mic you can't hear yourself and often time get confused. Now imagine being a singer where u not only have to remember lyrics to one of their 100s of songs but also remember the cues, exact timing of chorus, verses, etc in a loud audience and blasting speakers and echos.
      The biggest problem is the echo. That thing makes it like 5 times worse without in ears. You feel lost even tho you know everything of the song that you have practiced 1000 times😂

      @@NewmusicreviewBands have been successful before because they use stage facing speakers which basically does the same thing. The only reason why musicians prefer in ear monitors nowadays is because it eliminates feedback, you can now basically point your mic anywhere and you wont hear that annoying screeching sound. These click tracks and PA systems are just add ons, but the primary reason for this really is just for better sound quality (because you can turn the mics louder without causing feedback)

  • @PlayGtr

    Okay young lady, the reason why "musicians" use in-ears is because back in the day bands performing live had monitors on the stage facing the so they could hear themselves sing over the music but there was always problems that would occur with those on stage monitors. Fast foward to in-ears being invented, musicians and singers no longer needed to use on stage monitors because the new in-ears were playing their vocals in their ear so they can hear themselves AND not to have to use a crutch of some voice cuing up telling them what to do next or a click track giving them the tempo to play to because that is what the drummer is for, just ask Ringo Starr. Also if you are a musician you do not need to be told when to sing or when to come in on your guitar solo because you are a dam musician and you already know how and when to do that by many years of practice and working the song out in lpractice. Do you think Brian May or Freddie Mercury of Queen ever used that kind of cheating crap?!! Heck no and neither has any other classic rock band .. Brian is currently playing with Queen and Adam Lambert right now in Japan and he still isn't using something so ridiculous. I'm sure that is how you were taught but this is not a good thing to get used to using. It's a crutch a true musician doesn't need and it ruins one's musicianship.

    • @ThatsMeHaileyB
      @ThatsMeHaileyB  10 місяців тому +6

      Hey! I also use floor monitors but I prefer IEMs mainly because when I play with my band & use floor monitors my vocals and guitar playing can sometimes get lost and buried in the mix. The IEMS also have helped save my hearing. The track cues are definitely not necessary as you said but it is handy to have for those who wish to utilize it! Also unlike IEMs, wedge monitors don't provide a balanced monitoring experience you can rely on night after night, venue after venue. Bands choose IEMs for improved sound quality, reduced feedback, hearing protection and more. Also all of Queen except Brian May uses In Ears today. :)

      Yeah true.. after using a inears for a few times I also feel it's not good for musicians, it's probably good for singers. It completely spoils the way we enjoy playing on stage with other instruments.. I've noticed we will not be able to make good music with these inears. Inears are Totally a crap.
