    what great scholarship on your part. I took Professor Kleiner's course on the history of ancient Rome. It was listed by Yale University as a free on line course. It was very worthwhile and helped me to understand and appreciate what I was seeing in Rome

      Thank you so much! I appreciate your recognizing what a great scholar Dr. Kleiner was. I am so grateful to have taken her course online when she was alive and answered our questions. She is the one insisted on offering her course online for free, a radical, pioneering suggestion at the time. Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments.

    This is on my list for Rome. Thank you for the information about the cafe. I was looking, but it seemed to be inside. Apparently, the views of the Forum from it are amazing.
    I do love a freebie in Rome. 😊

      That's very kind of you! I tried to become a guide but the process in Italy is utterly Byzantine and next to impossible. Do you know the last time they gave the exam for Rome tour guides? Neither do I. It's maddening. So I gave up. I enjoy sharing what I know here and on my websites, and hope people like you find it interesting and enjoyable! @@lilpenny1982

    I've always wondered why Eastern Roman emperors such as Constantine, Justinian, Theodosius, etc. are not as popular as the Western Roman emperors such as Caesar, Augustus, Marcus Aurelius, etc. For example, people are aware of the 5 Roman Good Emperors (Nerva, Trajan ,Hadrian, Pius and Aurelius) which are all Western Roman emperors but there no studies of the 5 Roman Good Emperors from the East. Another example is people know about the bad emperors from the West such as Nero or Commodus but not from the East.

    • @lilpenny1982
      @lilpenny1982 Місяць тому

      Why is this?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  Місяць тому +1

      Well you raise an interesting people. I am not sure of the reason why people are more aware of and perhaps interested in some of the emperors of the Western Roman Empire. It may be because of the literature that was left by authors of the time such as Cassius Dio and Seutonius. It may be because there are some fantastic stories around them (sometimes exaggerated). Popular literature and filmmaking have also tended to focus more on these time periods and these emperors.
      I don't know the answer but thank you for raising an interesting point. Perhaps others commenting here might have some ideas?

    Thank you for all the amazing information. Me and my partner go on April 20th and are really struggling to find any tickets at all for the last couple of weeks. Apparently the co op culture site is no longer doing tickets as of April 8th and has a new website who only have tickets from may 1st. We are very confused.

      I believe you are referring to the Colosseum. During the month of April, CoopCulture is still the vendor.

      Tradition says that Constantine converted to Christianity in 312 and one year later, with the Edict of Milan, made Christianity the official religion of the Western Roman Empire. He was baptised on his deathbed in 337 by the Arian bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia.
