I just bought my first house in Sanford, FL because the commute to work is decent. Will be using shellac or oil based primer to stop all the cigarette smell in this old rental house!
Congratulations on your house! I have been use oil based primer in the bathrooms. The humidity makes the walls "bleed" out the tar from whoever smoked in this house before we got it. Good luck with your project 😁.
Help! I also put down a water based kilz. We bought 5 gallons. Didn’t know it had to be oil based. Question and help- can I apply the oil based one on top of the water based one? Per your video I think I can. However I want to make sure. Also thank you so much for posting. I would of NEVER known it had to be oil based. I was planning on doing a 2nd coat of the one I currently have (water based) today. Glad I saw your video because if not I would of wasted another day. Again thank you for sharing. I was ready already getting desperate and ready to cut out dry wall and sub flooring. The smell is getting to me.
Yes, that is what I had to do. Because they are both primers , they will have no problem sticking to each other. It has been 4 months and my dad (who has a very sensitive nose), said that he couldn't smell any urine! I count that a success. Good luck. I'm so glad that I could help 😁!

hey! thanks so much for showing the process! can you explain why you didn't replace the subfloor and sealed it instead? i'm dealing with cat urine on carpet padding that seeped into subfloor. looking into either replacing everything or just sealing subfloor and replacing padding but keeping carpet. thanks!
Thank you for your encouragement 😊! Honestly, it all came down to cost. The subflooring wasn't rotted from the urine,so there was no structural need to replace them. It would have cost me almost 10 times as much money to replace all of the subflooring, not to mention that it would have been difficult and time consuming. I chose the oil based primer because it was the cheapest and easiest way to get rid of the smell, and it has 😊. It's been 3 years since I made that fix and the smell has not come back!
Excellent question! The only time that the urine smell came back is when I peeled away more of the old flooring while working on the rest of the house, but I quickly primed over that as well. Not a bit of urine smell came through the floor that I primed a year ago. I would call that a success 😁!
I sprayed the subfloor with chlorox urine remover before painting it with the kilz oil based primer. I'm not going to lie though, the urine remover just soaked into the subfloor and didn't really help the smell. The oil based primer was the only thing that got rid of the urine smell. 3 years later and it hasn't come back!
I accidentally used the water based one first. Within 24 hours, the smell was leeching through and leaving stains that soaked through the primer. It was horrible. With one coat of oil based primer, the smell and stains were gone for good. I had a year in between painting the floor and laying flooring over top. They never came back.
Yes! I covered these floors almost 3 years ago and the smell never came back 😁. It is definitely a game changer when it comes to knocking out nasty smells.

If you have really warped spots that are going to make laying flooring difficult, I would. There were a couple really bad spots on the floor, but for the most part, I put the primer straight on the subfloor.
Another tip for removing the spell is to soak the affected area with hydrogen peroxide, cover with a sheet of plastic and let work overnight. The next day mop up the entire area and let dry completely. The smell should be eliminated.
No. I have a dehumidifier in the house now, but that floor was coated with primer, left bare, with lots of humidity for a year, and we still couldn't smell the urine!
That question is more difficult because I don't have a time frame. Usually I will use the primer and let it be for a day or two and then cover it up with click flooring. Once it is covered by something(flooring, paint), the smell goes away right away. If you leave the space uncovered, you may get a primer smell for weeks before it goes away. It should work for sheetrock as well. There were very uriny parts along the walls by the subflooring as well. I gave it a good couple of coats and it has remained unsmelly😉. I did however have to seal the crack between the subfloor and the sheet rock before painting because when I left that crack open, the urine smell kept coming back from the exposed, untreated sheetrock.

Thank you so much, I am going to try this. Don't know if they even have oil base anything in California, they like banning everything that works....
Amazing how people would want to let their animals just pee and poop everywhere. Just utterly disgusting. You should just live in a barn.
I'm not convinced that that was just a household pet. The house was vacant for a time before we bought it, and a racoon was living unhindered in the house... 😜Yuck! I also think that a barn would have been cleaner 😉.
That won't cover it. Use fizzon
Actually it has. I filmed that about a year and a half ago. That urine smell has not come back. Thank you for the alternative suggestion though.
