Can you give a detailed guide on choosing the epoxy mixing ratios. And the materials required to make one in a cost effective way.
Nice work! Great design. Just a tip... When you work with epoxy you should wear gloves and preferably a face mask when you are routing or sanding. Skin and epoxy are not a good combination. It can take shorter or longer but in the end you might develop serious skin-issues. The infamous epoxy eczema is no joke. Neither is lung cancer. There is good reason why professionals take precautions.

Hi greg, when you put your table tops onto a metal frame, do you put the screws inserts into the wood only, because sometimes I see only epoxy in the corner areas and no wood near the corner, I wondered how you then attach your metal frame to the top.

Gorgeous work, love that table! But can’t second the dust mask/dust extractor comment enough, epoxy dust can be lethal, it’s just not worth it!
Hi Greg. Love your work. I live in the US Pacific Northwest where it is cold and rainy for half the year. I’m planning a table like this for a covered outdoor kitchen area. In a driving rainstorm the table will get wet. What would your recommendation be for finishing such a table for use in these conditions?

What do you use to clean the slab before placing in the mould?
What are all the waxes,oils,polishes, and release agents you used
Would you be in favour of sanding down to 2000 grit before using the Odies Oil so that both the epoxy and wood have a natural shine from the sanding alone?
Definitely not. Sanding wood to higher grid is not a good idea, then the oil will not penetrate into the wood.
Odies we normally sand to 400 and stop from there, rubio we and to 180.

Hey Greg - great work...I too agree that island tables look much better than the standard river tables - much more flowing and natural.
That being said - I'm curious why you don't seal all sides and edges of the slabs with epoxy before you do the pour?...from the research that I've done it seems that sealing all surfaces helps to eliminate random bubbles while also protecting the raw wood from getting stained when using dark liquid pigments???

Honestly speaking both methods are working perfectly, if you going to use a solid colour epoxy then if your slab will make bubbles then you won’t see them only if your epoxy are going to be see through.

Could you see the layers through the top or the side. I’m doing the same transparent black. I want to do one pour but ecopoxy says it’s too thick not to do it. Your table turned out great. I’m just hoping not to see a line every time I made a pour
Hi James, thanks for the kind words.
So the epoxy application we are using only allows us to pour layers and not do a deep casting, so to get the same colour consistency throughout theres 2 methods.
Mix your colour pigment into your main batch of “Resin” NOT YOUR HARDENER!
Or you can add exactly the same amount of colour pigment into each batch you pour.

Isnt the Odies oil gonna be removed if u buff it away like that on the epoxy?, because it doesnt penetrate the epoxy, it only sticks to the surface? I think you need to use a machine to buff it out evenly? maby im wrong
No, odies oil is a legit product. They even say you have to buff it in, we give our clients a jar of odies and show them how to maintain the table.

Came to this channel after watching Blacktail Studio videos. UA-cam suggested this video. Very impressive work, interesting to see the difference in techniques. Just a question, the wax on the bottom mold surface is there a reason for that? All the best from Fiji. Hope things in South Africa turn right for everyone. God bless.

The wax we use is to prevent the epoxy from sticking to the wood, I know in the US they like to use the tape method, we find it best to use the wax, its cheap and fast.
We have about 7 tables lined up so theres alot of videos on the way.

Going to build my house first from timber sourced from our clan owned land. Once I get past that then will look into other end user timber products. All the best mate.👍😎
Can this type of epoxy stand the outdoor elements?
Not recommend.. the sun can cause discolouration on the epoxy.
Greg, why can't you put screws into the epoxy? Is it necessary to put your screws into the wood portion of the table?

Does torching the live edge to make it dark cause any issues in binding between the resin and torched wood? What grit do you use to sand the torched edge? Great work new subscriber
Thanks for the support, the bonding will still be good, we used 120 grit to sand the inside edges, also make sure to wipe the edges off with a cloth.

I get little sanding swirls on my epoxy how can i get rid of them. What pad did you use
There can be so many things that causes the swirl marks, im making a video in the near future regarding swirl marks
