Yeah I went to a high end bistro other week and the fish and chip batter was so soggy such a shame cos the fish inside was so lovely but the batter let it down and also only got about 3 chips and 4 peas haha
They also have a 5* food hygiene rating. That's better than some larger pubs and restaurants! Love the fact you took your own knife and fork with you! Another great video.
That looks like some proper ghetto fish & chips, Gareth😋 All the chippies near me went premium a long time ago. I miss the days where every street corner had a backstreet chippy serving up huge portions of tasty food on the cheap. Always good to see you try new types of videos/content👍👍👍
It reminded me of what the Chinese chippies do where all the batter sticks to your chips lol I like my batter a little bit more crisper than that, the batter did look a bit pasty in colour but we can’t taste what Gareth can and he is a good benchmarker, saying that I’ll never be heading up that way to try it no doubt 😊
Top video pal, I love these videos!! Proper back street Chippy that, can imagine that being extremely popular in the local community back in the day. Can remember the days of queuing round the block on a Friday night after work and a few jars. Good old days …. Smithy
Only thing that let them down were the Peas other than that the Fish & Chips looked lovely A back street chippy is a rare find these days Nice to see it’s still there Perhaps the weather is too hot for a chippy dinner that’s why it was quiet 😄
Small fish and chips by us have just gone from £4.70 to £5.00. They're £3.70 further down the road but not quite so good. I always have them in a tray with a lid. They stay hot and it's less messy. Yes the peas let it down. The 2 shops I just mentioned sell everything, they're really clean and they do a roaring trade. I'm in the midlands.
Just came across this channel for the first time and I'm glad I have seeing as my regular go to food reviewers have been letting me down. Great review!
Its a joke when you think of it we once had a huge fishing fleet and fish and chips were cheap it was once part of a stable diet of the UK I remember fish and chips at 1\6 and 2\6 when I was a kid .😠
The back streets reminded me of where i lived in Stockton On Tees where i was born . We had a great fish shop over the road called Megs with the beautiful old range behind the counter . I'm off to Seaton Carew tomorrow for Fish & Chips to a shop called " The Almighty Cod " not been for ages so looking forward to it xx
Apart from those peas, that looks 'spot on' Gaz. There is a tiny old English Fish & Chip shop I still occasionally visit that I first went to during my dinner hour when I started Secondary School in 1983 (I am now 51) and is still going strong to this day and the exterior and interior has hardly changed at all with the same tiles on the wall, same counter, etc and is like walking into a 1983 time warp (though not 1983 prices now sadly, lol) but still one of the cheapest in the town with the same generous portions and still has a queue going out the door when busy. In a country now dominated by Pizza/Kebab shops, Chinese/Indian takeaways and fast food chains, It's great to still come across these old English back street Fish & Chip shops with many of them still stuck in a bit of a time warp after all these years which makes them more charming.
A wonderful comment and you are so right. The original back street chippy has now become a nostalgic thing, particualry when it feels like you've gone back in time when you step through its doorway. Cheers. 👍
A Yorkshire lad here, pleased to hear that you like the way that we cook our fish and chips in beef fat or sometimes its pork fat (Lard). However one word of caution would be to always ask the staff what they are cooking in because several locations use vegetable oils instead as a result of their customers having religious objections to consuming beef or pork products. I would also recommend that you should ask when the fat/oil was last changed, as old fats/oils can absorb other flavours or become distasteful , even to the point of becoming rancid, especially if they are cooking a large range of assorted foods, for example sausages or burgers being cooked in the same deep fryer as pizzas and chocolate bars that have already gone into fat that is being used for the main product of fish and chips. To me if the menu displays a wide variety of foods, it’s a yellow flag warning for dubious taste or quality, but the best indicator for me is the smell of the cooking!
Suffered that for 30 years, 6641. Two chippies within a five minute walk. Run by asiatics. Used to use 'em, just sacked 'em as the flavour just is'nt there. I do "bart". I need a bus journey, which i do use for shopping, so partake in some pig lard f/chips. yum.
Mans kicking knowledge there he’s so right and opened my eyes somewhat to my local chip shop that is now halal with a huge menu I won’t be going again ever !
Great video Gareth, you've really captured the moment. A small fish and chip shop, quaintly tucked away in a back street on a corner which adds a certain charm to the whole experience. The fragrant aroma of the freshly cooked fish and chips in your car brought a sense of comfort and contentment with the stresses of the week melting away, being replaced by a tranquil moment of pure enjoyment on that sunny afternoon as the world outside passed by leaving just the pleasure of this gastronomic delight and immersing ouselves in the moment creating a wonderful feeling of indulgence, nostalgia, and relaxation. It's a simple pleasure like this that brings joy and contentment, reminding us to slow down and appreciate experiences such as this. A brilliant video youve made here. The mushy peas looked a bit too watery though. Cheers Gareth. 👍
Had fish and chips from there quite a few times, though not in the last couple of years they were always nice cooked to order last time I was there. A tip for you my mum was a cook from working in service, always said the best diet was to eat what you like "but less of it " worked for me, also used to walk to Barrow for a couple of pints the walk home back to Dalton.
I went on holiday to whitby during whit week. I got haddock and chips from the magpie and they were delicious. They left the skin on and it made it more tasty in my opinion.
This chippy follows my standard rule. A slightly shabby little backstreet chippie thats a bit rundown is usually the best. The big shiny rumbles is usually a little worse
Good on you Gareth, I was going to suggest that you gave it a try. I thought they were pretty good. A bit greasy but my mushy peas were not as watery as those!
Our local chippy has just closed after over 75 years in the same location as they have lost lots of custom because people can't afford the price increases. This cost of living is getting out of control, everytime i go into a shop something jumps up in price.
Brilliant thanks Gareth. Am just thinking if anyone walked past & saw a man sat eating fish & chips (complete with knife & fork) talking to his phone…….’oh yeah, it’s a long drive, I just pulled over to get something to eat’ 🤣😂
Gareth you so and so! Here I am with a yoghurt for my dinner (lunch) and watching you tucking into fish and chips.....aaargh! Energy costs for fish and chip shops have gone up tremendously, so I don 't begrudge them for prices going up a bit. Here inWakey, we got 2 fish and 1 lot of chips for aroun d £7.50 last week.
They looked like yesterdays leftover chips at the beginning. Our chippy takes your fish order as you walk in the door, you can ask for a lightly battered cod and somehow they know which one they cooked for you when they come to wrap them! Thursday special is fish, chips and either peas/gravy/curry sauce - proper portions and all for £5.80!
Lovely plaice for a fish supper am off up the road to watch some hardcore prawn just for the hailbut and listen to some sole music have a good whelkend mate
Yummy yummy gazza fish and chips cant beat the old chippies mate as i told yer before i live in florida now and i do miss my english cuisine hopefully im going back home for a month in october for a month all going well and i will be throwing proper curries and doner kebab and fish and chips down me neck
That looks so good. My main envy is the paper 😢😅😊 oh I wish we still had them in paper instead of those lined paper bags or worse cardboard boxes that dry them out. Oh I miss chip paper.
Oh I forgot, that they were ready too. I love food that's ready and waiting, not just out the fryer and full of oil. That it's well drained in a hot cabinet is perfect. Got to wait 20 minutes for everything round my way.
the chippys near me are paying 25 pounds a bag for spuds, also the price of gas has gone up and and the price of batter has gone up a lot. the potion in the video must be small.
Can’t believe 8 quid is cheap now. I haven’t lived in the uk for 20 years. Last time in the Walney co op, I was raving about the prices, and Jill working there said, still complaining about the prices John. It had been 10 years since I was there. I love Walney, and Barrow folk are the best.
Hi mate, I'm a Barrow lad and I used to go to York Street all the time about 17/18 years ago, and there was always a queue going round the corner. For various reasons I didn't go for a long time, but when I called in again they were as good as ever. The quality was excellent up until about a year ago, when the fish wasn't a patch on what it was, and I haven't been since; you obviously enjoyed yours, so I think it might be time to give York St another go. And I'm pretty sure you're right, it did change ownership a wee while back, but don't ask me when!
Cheers Martin, yes thought it did change ownership. Yes I remember bigger portions back then but I'm taking 25 years ago. We live in different times now. Nice to see a fellow barrovian is watching. All the best.
Shuger in those peas just to say nice I am a member now love it old school peas I know you like that me to I have seen your revues when mushey peas are involved
Great video gareth. Very jealous. I went to pub in llandudno last week, had haddock chips peas tartare sauce for mindblowing £16. So yours was a bargain my friend. Take care. Karl.
In case it is of interest, the same meal would have cost £11.15 here in North Wales. Quite nice, but we only go once in a blue moon here now, they probably made more money out of us before, margin may have been lower but they used to sell a lot more food. Medium Chips £2.40 Standard Cod £5.95 Peas £1.40 Cans £1.40 We find a Chinese meal a much better deal now.
You can't beat a good English Chippy. I was recently in Rochdale. Spotted a chippy down a side street off the a58 called eskdale Chippy. I walked in to a warm welcome from the staff and noticed the 5 hygiene rating, so off to a good start. I look at the price list and I was amazed. £1.80 for chips and £2.95 for fish. Fish and chips for less than a fiver! That's unheard-of anywhere at the moment. The chips were fresh, tasty and not soggy. The fish was beautifully cooked with crispy batter. It's a country mile better that my local chippy charging £9 for the same. Its a shame I don't live closer.
I used to go to York Street regularly as they were great value for money. If I had one fault to find it was that the chips weren't always hot enough for me!
A fish supper in my local chippie in Edinburgh costs £9.10, no mushie peas or cold drink, so yours are a real bargain. I like my chips done in beef dripping, but most shops use oil nowadays, they can flog their used oil for recycling to make fuel for diesel engines and make a few bob selling it😂😂
My mouth is watering severely 👍. Fairly new to subscribing and loving the channel. I could just put what you got left there in a bap and devour it! Spot on!
A lot of Yorkshire chippies have gone back to dripping but a lot also use haddock which I prefer to cod, but well cooked and a few half decent chips there is little difference cod or haddock. Those peas were you supposed to eat them or drink them :))). But peas again is down to the chippy some do rubbish fish but great peas its swings and roundabouts but its fish and chips and they have to be in the top ten on several lists. :)
That was a fair price to pay Gareth, but yeah, those peas were way too watery, but I guess the Cod and chips made up for that,so all in all it was a 8/10 from me 👍
That's good value ... Medium Cod & Chips with Mushy Peas and a Can of Coke is £13.70 where I live (Kent Coast) ... it's always tasty though ... hardly a cheap family meal nowadays!
Oh,come on man 🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌 Strongly craving the chip shop now….lol I would say it’s cod.chunky white fish meat, probably sweet too. That’s roughly about the price I would pay for the same my way. Awesome upload
The crunch of batter as you had your first bite! SPOT ON! No-one likes soggy batter.
Oh I love soggy batter and chips lol
Or a soggy bottom 😊
That a good price for the size of it. It look so tasty, 👍❤️😃
I like soggy batter, with a hint of fish. It shows a lass is having a good time.
Yeah I went to a high end bistro other week and the fish and chip batter was so soggy such a shame cos the fish inside was so lovely but the batter let it down and also only got about 3 chips and 4 peas haha

Yes we love these videos.more fish and chips.😀👍
More to come!

A back street chippy is a rare find these days
Nice to see it’s still there
Perhaps the weather is too hot for a chippy dinner that’s why it was quiet 😄
Thanks for the info
Definitely a letdown with the swimming peas. Lol. Everything else looked delicious. Thanks for the video, Gareth 👌
My pleasure!
Thanks for another entertaining video 💜💜💜
You are so welcome
Lovely stuff, lovely. I am hungry now....
That looked GREAT! I love fish and chips!
You can't beat fish and chips for a tasty meal

That’s cheap I think .
I know I'm getting on, but when I think of being sent round the corner for "two fillets and a shillingsworth..."
That's cheap near on 20 quid in Devon
Standard rate for most l think!
Just came across this channel for the first time and I'm glad I have seeing as my regular go to food reviewers have been letting me down. Great review!
Thank you kindly and welcome 🙏
I’m impressed that they gave you a proper knife and fork with them 🙃
I love a proper traditional chippy. Not ones that do pizzas and kebabs.😂😂
Great value and great fish and chips. It's all about what you get, not where the chippy is or how the place looks.
Exactly yes
Its a joke when you think of it we once had a huge fishing fleet and fish and chips were cheap it was once part of a stable diet of the UK I remember fish and chips at 1\6 and 2\6 when I was a kid .😠
Great video Gaz and a great price it just goes to show you it can be done enjoy yourself 👏👏👍👍
Absolutely cheers Peter
Billions and Billions of likes Respect to Host and Channel 👍✌️🇨🇦
Nice to see a business still going after 25 years Gareth. Round here everything has changed in the past few years or closed down.
Yes still lots of local chippy open
Good old British food! Love Fridays , for many reasons!!...
Oh yes!
Lovely… I remember the chippy in havering, that was really nice perfect chips lovely fish as well, blimy that was many years ago now

All more reason to support local businesses.

Yes not bad done in dripping.
I'm Yorkshire also and I once asked our local chippy when she last changed the oil ....she changed the subject 😂
Suffered that for 30 years, 6641. Two chippies within a five minute walk. Run by asiatics. Used to use 'em, just sacked 'em as the flavour just is'nt there. I do "bart". I need a bus journey, which i do use for shopping, so partake in some pig lard f/chips. yum.
So if you ask for a Halal fish supper it won't taste of everything else (clean oiil) ?
Sounds like a plan lol
Mans kicking knowledge there he’s so right and opened my eyes somewhat to my local chip shop that is now halal with a huge menu I won’t be going again ever !
Not forgetting the old fray bentos pie that i love

Yes you nailed it mate. Fish and chips on a Friday took away all the stress 😩 hope you're well mate. 🙂
Hey Gaz, I always have a pickled egg and pickled onion with a fish supper then wash it down with a few cans of John Smiths beer. Can't beat it.
Never tried that one but they looked good , when in Barrow I tend to go to the Olympic chippy as it’s handy to walk to from where I’m working

Love fish chips Gareth they can be pricey but a. Treat yes thank you xx👍👍👍👍👍

I went on holiday to whitby during whit week. I got haddock and chips from the magpie and they were delicious. They left the skin on and it made it more tasty in my opinion.

This chippy follows my standard rule. A slightly shabby little backstreet chippie thats a bit rundown is usually the best.

Seems like a decent price for a fish supper especially with the can and side, looks a good Size too, thanks for sharing Gareth spot on 👍🏻😎
No problem 👍
Shouldn't watch this before going to bed....stomach rumbling now 😋😂....another fab chippy review from your good self👍
Much better price and value than the other spot you did Gaz
Yes indeed Chris
That is a bargain, medium is enough for me. Love the content Gareth xx

Thats what i was thinking. I live abroad so this is just torture 😅. It's the mmmmmms that get me ...😊
Let's go straight to eat-o-vision.
@@supalew 😆
The smell of other peoples fish and chips as you walk past them in the street 😢😅
If I eat Peas off my knife my wife would be putting two spherical objects in the chip pan 😅
Guided by the aroma. The anticipation... 😋
Haha yes

Nice one thank you pal.
Cheers Gareth, you can’t beat good old cod and chips with mushy peas.
Yes always a winner mate. 🏆
Brilliant thanks Gareth. Am just thinking if anyone walked past & saw a man sat eating fish & chips (complete with knife & fork) talking to his phone…….’oh yeah, it’s a long drive, I just pulled over to get something to eat’ 🤣😂

Nice, I'm a new subscriber - no worries what you review, but I'm sure local takeaways would appreciate the support right now.
Much appreciated! Welcome to the channel 😀
Friday is fish and chip day! Yummy! 😋
Oh yes!
Love this content, thanks G.
Appreciate that
They look tasty. Can’t get any decent fish and chips where I am. ❤
And i love the british humour which i miss dearly

That looked lovely, I would never have the peas anyway!!! Good review and glad to see they are still there.
Mumsfilibaba..i can almost smell the fish delight over here in sweden. Thnx😊
My pleasure 😊
Looks great!
They looked lovely Gareth, and it was really good value for what you got. I could just eat them. The only let down was the peas.

Very suave with the knife and fork Gareth! What's wrong with hands? Oh too hot? Ha ha. Cheers Debra xxx
Yes I'm thinking ahead lol
The Aldi Triple Cut chips are great, small bag though. But they are beef dripping cooked and tatste just like our award winning chippy in Yorkshire
Yep I buy them myself and lidil ones, the fish fillets are also good 3 to 4 of those on a plate with Tesco mushy peas and there you have it
Sorry forgot to say, great video btw mate , loved it , hope u have a good summer mate , take care
Look lovely those Gareth 👌

Price of fish in this country is insane.
the chippys near me are paying 25 pounds a bag for spuds, also the price of gas has gone up and and the price of batter has gone up a lot. the potion in the video must be small.
Chippies used to get a lot of fish from Russia, but that route has dried up.
Lunch time special near me 2 fish and chips curry source with breadcakes 25 pound not cheap anymore keep up the good work mate 👍
I'm glad you are enjoying them fish and chips as you had a bad time with that sub roll but you can't beat fish and chips .
Yes it's always a winner
Can’t believe 8 quid is cheap now. I haven’t lived in the uk for 20 years. Last time in the Walney co op, I was raving about the prices, and Jill working there said, still complaining about the prices John. It had been 10 years since I was there. I love Walney, and Barrow folk are the best.

Looks and sounds gorgeous! Well done. 👍
Many thanks!
I'm happy you enjoyed them - they look really good. Shame about the grease, but if you like grease, all good.

Yes cheapest ones I've had
@karl8049 Was the Llandudno pub a takeaway? Guessing not so if you factor in, all other over heads of the pub, a fair price.
In case it is of interest, the same meal would have cost £11.15 here in North Wales. Quite nice, but we only go once in a blue moon here now, they probably made more money out of us before, margin may have been lower but they used to sell a lot more food.

Thanks for sharing. Yes it certainly is a different taste.
Very good price where I live cheapest would be about 10 plus. And fish and chip is special at anytime.
That was a fair price to pay Gareth, but yeah, those peas were way too watery, but I guess the Cod and chips made up for that,so all in all it was a 8/10 from me 👍
agree, the peas could do with being a bit more stodgy

That's good value ... Medium Cod & Chips with Mushy Peas and a Can of Coke is £13.70 where I live (Kent Coast) ... it's always tasty though ... hardly a cheap family meal nowadays!

I would say it’s cod.chunky white fish meat, probably sweet too. That’s roughly about the price I would pay for the same my way. Awesome upload
