      @@youshimimi I mean, normal trees in parks or on private property are usually pruned regularly. Trees are felled to make paper and wood for furniture, construction, etc. House plants are "forced" to live in a less than ideal environment for the sake of aesthetics. Especially succulents get trimmed and propagated often because you can't give them enough light on a windowsill. Would you say the term "weed" is a slur? It refers to innocent plants that are slaughtered in the name of "aesthetics".
      This might look harsh, but you would really need to apply this sort of logic to everything surrounding plants. They don't have feelings. They can react to physical damage and other stress factors, but they don't feel pain as we do. This is nothing compared to nature.

      It’s not for everyone and I can distinctly remember the first time I cut back a plant hard for bonsai purposes I felt very uncomfortable. It also helps to realize that as a bonsai practitioner, I absolutely spoil my trees. I try to give them the best living conditions (light, humidity, fertilizer etc.) and water them everyday, check and treat for pests and so on. @karenrumney5210 Cultivating and shaping bonsai is a difficult hobby that requires more horticultural knowledge than I have-and I'm literally a plant biologist. But anyway. While, yes, pruning back a tree to so few shoots will encourage aggressive lateral budding (and the development of scar tissue due to the release of auxin), this tree isn't struggling for light or competing with others for limiting nutrients. The reason bonsai trees thrive, even after being so severely injured, is because they are raised with such care and attention. The human equivalent would probably be, well, losing a limb but having all your economic and societal competition absolved. You would be allowed to recover in total bliss.

    Tradtionally bonsai was reserved for trees which were stunted or unable to grow well in nature due to their environment. These yamadori would then be collected and trained further to progress forwards and let these little trees look like versions of their larger species.
    However, with the commercialization of bonsai, many gardeneres started doing what we saw above. Taking nursery stock and unnecssarily cutting and manipulating in order to look like bonsai.
    Instead, go out for a hike in the woods and look for a special yamadori that might actually benefit from these techniques. Also these cuts and adjustments are done over years not an evening like these modern bonsai farmers.

    For anyone who is saying that this is a spiteful process, i would like you to take into account the following about bonsai before you jump to conclusions.
    This is an extremely old art form, based entirely around the human appreciation and love for nature and its beauty.
    A tree’s health will always be the absolute top priority of any bonsai owner. A tree will never be put through too much stress if it cannot handle it. Bonsai trees are probably the most meticulously cared for plants you’ll find, and part of this reason is the genuine bond you develop with each tree when you raise and care for them.
    I can appreciate that the process of removing branches and foliage may seem careless and spiteful. I can confidently say that it is one of the most difficult and important decisions in styling a tree, and a lot of thought goes into each chop. Nothing will be removed unless the tree is deemed to be healthy enough to be able to handle the changes. It’s also important to know that removing branches/foliage is commonly done to promote new growth and help a tree thrive.
    Bending of the trunk or branches is another thing which concerns people. It is again a process which when done properly, requires good judgment and much thought. Trees will never be styled a certain way by a good bonsai keeper if it puts too much stress or strain on the plant.
    The argument that this whole process is interfering with nature is a fair one, and if you truly believe that it is unjust for humans to interject on a plant’s natural development, then you’re absolutely allowed to feel that way. One point i will make though which i don’t feel gets mentioned enough, is that the vast majority of bonsai trees come from nursery stock, bought from a company who mass produces the material. It is only a small percentage of trees which are taken from the wild.
    I feel that although bonsai is an art form, the tree is not just another medium to be manipulated carelessly. It is cared for deeply, and gradually developed into something beautiful over many years.

    • @Bonsaifly
      @Bonsaifly  7 місяців тому +6

      Nicely said. That pretty much sums it up. I would also like to point out that the survival rate of trees in the wild is much lower than that of Bonsai. Bonsai trees are spoiled in a lot of aspects and only the first transition from nursery stock to first styling is as harsh as what you see here. Afterwards the actions performed on a tree become less and less intrusive.
      Another thing I’d like to say is that if you’re eating meat, have wood in your house, buy new clothes all the time, drive your car everywhere etc. your negative impact on nature is far greater than what you see (and according to the amount of comments don’t understand) here.
      It is okay not to like something and I am not trying to preach any type of behavior here. Do with that what you will. Anyway, I am glad there are so many people here that get the beauty and meaning of Bonsai ⭐️

    • @Bonsaifly
      @Bonsaifly  8 місяців тому +44

      Let me try to address this. Btw there are tons of people saying exactly what you’re saying. However torture would only be possible if plants felt pain, which they do not. In terms of soil a granular soil is needed to allow aeration of the roots for faster root development. The conditions for growing trees in pots are a little different than growing them in nature. And in terms of nutrients, this tree is fertilized frequently. Hope that answers your doubts
