Does anyone that's upset about him pruning the tree stating he hurt it get upset when people mow land or prune fruit trees or pull weeds? Asking for a friend.
People, why do you think it is possible to torture a tree? Plants are not sentient organisms as they don't have nervous systems or anything simmilar. With your logic, you could as well say that cutting leaves off a live plant to use them in cooking is torture.
Yes, I get the misconception a lot. By the same logic mowing your lawn or pruning your hedges is torture. But I think it is okay that it’s not for everyone. Those that like it get what Bonsai is and cherish the connection to the tree.
For anyone who is saying that this is a spiteful process, i would like you to take into account the following about bonsai before you jump to conclusions. This is an extremely old art form, based entirely around the human appreciation and love for nature and its beauty. A tree’s health will always be the absolute top priority of any bonsai owner. A tree will never be put through too much stress if it cannot handle it. Bonsai trees are probably the most meticulously cared for plants you’ll find, and part of this reason is the genuine bond you develop with each tree when you raise and care for them. I can appreciate that the process of removing branches and foliage may seem careless and spiteful. I can confidently say that it is one of the most difficult and important decisions in styling a tree, and a lot of thought goes into each chop. Nothing will be removed unless the tree is deemed to be healthy enough to be able to handle the changes. It’s also important to know that removing branches/foliage is commonly done to promote new growth and help a tree thrive. Bending of the trunk or branches is another thing which concerns people. It is again a process which when done properly, requires good judgment and much thought. Trees will never be styled a certain way by a good bonsai keeper if it puts too much stress or strain on the plant. The argument that this whole process is interfering with nature is a fair one, and if you truly believe that it is unjust for humans to interject on a plant’s natural development, then you’re absolutely allowed to feel that way. One point i will make though which i don’t feel gets mentioned enough, is that the vast majority of bonsai trees come from nursery stock, bought from a company who mass produces the material. It is only a small percentage of trees which are taken from the wild. I feel that although bonsai is an art form, the tree is not just another medium to be manipulated carelessly. It is cared for deeply, and gradually developed into something beautiful over many years.
Nicely said. That pretty much sums it up. I would also like to point out that the survival rate of trees in the wild is much lower than that of Bonsai. Bonsai trees are spoiled in a lot of aspects and only the first transition from nursery stock to first styling is as harsh as what you see here. Afterwards the actions performed on a tree become less and less intrusive. Another thing I’d like to say is that if you’re eating meat, have wood in your house, buy new clothes all the time, drive your car everywhere etc. your negative impact on nature is far greater than what you see (and according to the amount of comments don’t understand) here. It is okay not to like something and I am not trying to preach any type of behavior here. Do with that what you will. Anyway, I am glad there are so many people here that get the beauty and meaning of Bonsai ⭐️
So how you make a bonsai tree is to torture a plant by not giving it in enough nutrients and chopping off It's roots .... plant needs dirt not this one Sorry everyone's thinking it no one's saying it.🤷🏼
Let me try to address this. Btw there are tons of people saying exactly what you’re saying. However torture would only be possible if plants felt pain, which they do not. In terms of soil a granular soil is needed to allow aeration of the roots for faster root development. The conditions for growing trees in pots are a little different than growing them in nature. And in terms of nutrients, this tree is fertilized frequently. Hope that answers your doubts
You are wrong With everything you Said. Chopping a few roots isnt Bad at all. Same With pruning. Tell me do you Go Off to people mowing their lawn, or trimming their hedge too Like that? Bonsai trees because the roots are pruned also have plenty of soil, plenty of water and plenty of fertilizer.

I bought a Chinese juniper (Stricta) from a nursery and while wiring it I accidentally managed to strip basically a complete ring around the base of the trunk, the strip is about 1cm high and goes around the whole base of the trunk (😳) I didn’t realise quite how delicate the bark would be and I can’t find much online in terms of what to do.. Will it survive? Should I tape up the wound to stop moisture getting in? Any help is much appreciated!
Man how do you keep yours from being so brittle it falls apart at a touch? Mine hasnt changed colors but it is so brittle you touch it and parts fall off, the thing has plenty of light and water and bonsai soil with fertilizer and moss topped
I had that happen to mine last year. The color can hold for a long time, even when it's dead. But like you experienced, the needles will fall off at the slightest touch. I suggest you test your juniper by cutting off a small section of it, preferably the a trunk or off-shoot of the trunk. If the wood is dry inside, it's dead. Let's wait for the spring, we will try it again.
@@Bonsaifly you can go ahead and take it personally. It’s just a weird feeling. @@jordanhancock279 Studies by absolute quacks. Plants have no nerves and no brain. They have purely chemical reactions to stimuli.
I know this is late but how do you keep the soil together on the “hill”? I have trouble because I have a super shallow pot for a forest, and it can be a struggle to keep the soil (s.moss and akadama and a tiny bit of filtered natural substraight) together.
You can use sphagnum moss (as I did here). Just lightly put it onto the soil without pressing in and then add some granular soil on top and press it in. Do that a couple of times and you’ll have a mount that will hold. Then use top dressing to secure
thank you so much@@Bonsaifly !
That is beautiful.
That juniper looks like the haircut of my nephew after they gave the kids scissors in the kindergarten for the first time 😂😂
Low key feels like you destroyed it
These things usually look worse before they look better.
That's bonsai. You torture the tree to survive at its bare minimum. So you take away as much as you can to slow it down. Again and again.
@@DembaiVT There is no torturing involved. People go to great lengths to care for their trees.
@@iamaduckquackLike a parent with muchausen by proxy.
Its literally a plant...
Wow❤
Only humans can ask of another living thing to bend to its will and aesthetic and feel no remorse. It’s pretty but it almost feels like torturing the plant 😔
if you think more about it you are comparing manipulation in families or in relationships, gaslight that shapes human without even noticing
Bonsai is like torturing little children, but for plants
People can call this torture but remember, a dandelion thinks the middle of a dehydrated crack in concrete is the perfect spot for their new home.
That's dope
Looks great ❤
Looks great as always man!!
Thanks dude
Excuse me, waiter, there's a dead pine tree in my pork fried rice...
It ain’t dead though
The Dark Eldar would love Bonsai
Gorgeous
beautiful
BEAUTIFUL! 😍
Wow so amazing!
“Elegant”, when you shred almost everything and make it lose its identity as a tree.
@bonsaifly do you give away tips and tricks on how to make a bonsai and mantain it?
I have some long form content out and am thinking about creating digital courses once I have a bit more time on my hands ✌🏻
Beautiful.
You sounded still sad when commenting on what you had to do to it's roots❤
This comment section is proof that social media has destroyed so many braincells
That's why i dont like to show unfinished work to people.
All comment section is filled with comments on "how ugly it looks". Just wait 4-5 years, and I promise you, your opinion will change
Yes. People that do Bonsai know this is true.
Even though people are being negative in the comment section their engagement helps out the channel though 😄
some wouldn't even believe it's the same tree or they will say it's so natural, where did you found such tree 😂
That tilted style is actually called windswept, so of course it looks windy 😅
This is a slanted style. Windswept style has branches that most only grow in one direction
Not the people getting mad over it and then eating plants and writing on paper while sitting on a wooden chair.
This
@Bonsaifly To be fair I couldn't do it, but I still find it interesting.
Good job dude
Didnt know Philza was into bonsai
🤫
He just killed that beautiful juniper tree
Nope, still alive and well
it survived a year so it will many years to come
Dude i just saw a german comedy special a few days ago and the guy is like the biggest stoner, he just gets on stage and talks funny stuff in like a very slow way. And dude he had a joke about him and his friends having a group where they save Bonzais and put them in normal sized pots, "so they can grow up like a normal tree" 😂 but dude what he said after that just completely f***ed me up haha. He finished the bit by saying "the japanese are kinda weird, why would they want small trees? They're like the pedophiles among gardeners" 😂😂😂😂
Lol
Uhhh?? 😧😧
That's disturbing 😧😧😧
Uh. I was looking forward to a good joke, but that is really just gross 😬
It feels like animal abuse, but for a plant
Can you expand or do you have videos talking about the top dressing ?
Not really but basically it’s just to highten the moisture levels and protect new roots as well as give an aesthetic moss look
Ah yes tree edging i love it
Nice... 👍🏻
How do you prevent unwanted new shoots growing out from the trunk?
I believe they just stay on top of it, or when it's replanted it just doesn't grow because of its forced living conditions. Idk though
You must prune the buds as they appear, or the shoots if the buds have sprouted
This tree actually back buds a fair amount. Since it’s still a skinny tree I honestly let it grow wild for a while and then just cut back again. That way it grows better
Great short video!
Thanks 😊
Pretty and calming
Bonsai = (low key) tree torture
while I do think a lot is personal responsibility let’s not forget how they genetically modified and processed the food which resulted in a product with a higher caloric content and lower nutritional content so in some cases you have to either eat more or take supplements. Cereals are the biggest perpetrator I think of on the spot
People its not tree torture it's bonsai 💀 and bonsai was made like this pruning wiring small pots thats what bonsai is to the people that thinks this is torture kiddos
Gin. Juniper. Good ol Gin.
Man so beautiful! Wow
Thank you ☺️
Bonsai trimming is literally the tree just being happy, and humans going NO, and torturing it into submission until it does as it's told.
I want to learn this style of art. Is there anyplace in Vegas?
No idea tbh
This comment section is hurting my brain
Many hurt brains in this comment section 💆🏼♂️
This feels like plant torture
Does anyone that's upset about him pruning the tree stating he hurt it get upset when people mow land or prune fruit trees or pull weeds? Asking for a friend.
Made me laugh
People, why do you think it is possible to torture a tree? Plants are not sentient organisms as they don't have nervous systems or anything simmilar. With your logic, you could as well say that cutting leaves off a live plant to use them in cooking is torture.
Yes, I get the misconception a lot. By the same logic mowing your lawn or pruning your hedges is torture. But I think it is okay that it’s not for everyone. Those that like it get what Bonsai is and cherish the connection to the tree.
Tree tortureeee!!!!! (This is satire I really don't care lol)
Haha
yo, my homie was wondering if you still made that mead from those juniper berries
Still? 🤔
When would be the best season to re-pot a bonsai?
Does anybody else remember bonsai cats?
So glad he pronounces "bonsai" correctly. Most people pronounce it like the "s" is a "z".
So how you make a bonsai tree is to torture a plant by not giving it in enough nutrients and chopping off
It's roots .... plant needs dirt not this one
Sorry everyone's thinking it no one's saying it.🤷🏼
Let me try to address this.
Do research before committing to a comment so ignorant
@@sophiebell4758chopping roots certainly isn't great, but the constant water, fertilizer, and reduced canopy which lead to reduced water/nutrient demands certainly make up for it.
A healthy bonsai is a healthy plant.
@@sophiebell4758 mowing isn’t good for the plants and nature it selfs. It’s literally only somethin people do to make there grass they brought into the new environment look better. It’s a damn shame
Hello, I have a quick question that I hope somebody can help me with.. Can a young juniper survive if there is a ring of bark removed from the base of the trunk? I bought a Chinese juniper (Stricta) from a nursery and while wiring it I accidentally managed to strip basically a complete ring around the base of the trunk, the strip is about 1cm high and goes around the whole base of the trunk (😳) I didn’t realise quite how delicate the bark would be and I can’t find much online in terms of what to do.. Will it survive? Should I tape up the wound to stop moisture getting in? Any help is much appreciated!
So did it survive?
Nothing you can do, that's a sure fire way to kill a tree
Obviously it's probably too late but not exactly true that theres nothing you can do, can always try bridge grafting
“Quick” question????LOL 😂
it will live, tree grow back bark, but it may or may not leave scar and can take some time
The tree looks good but the nebari needs a lot of work . looking forward to the update.
For sure, it’s a work in progress. Update in spring
Man how do you keep yours from being so brittle it falls apart at a touch? Mine hasnt changed colors but it is so brittle you touch it and parts fall off, the thing has plenty of light and water and bonsai soil with fertilizer and moss topped
Can’t really tell you what that is about
Sounds like it's dead, Ashtego. Sorry to say. Try again!
@@ErikPukinskis how did it die and not even change color???
I had that happen to mine last year. The color can hold for a long time, even when it's dead. But like you experienced, the needles will fall off at the slightest touch.
I suggest you test your juniper by cutting off a small section of it, preferably the a trunk or off-shoot of the trunk. If the wood is dry inside, it's dead.
Let's wait for the spring, we will try it again.
i get more an more weirded out by bonsai over time
Same with me and people commenting the strangest things on my videos
@@Bonsaifly you can go ahead and take it personally. It’s just a weird feeling. I can easily get behind trimming a plant but the effort involved in mal-nourishing this thing until it looks like “that tree over there” while also being right next to you is strange to me. why not look at the tree over there.
Viking bonzai!
🥲 i remember, i tried to bonsai a plant and failed miserably.
this is a really cool art form.
if people dont like it, they shouldnt watch it.
"pLaNtS hAvE fEeLiNgs"
"pLaNt aBuSE"

you shouldnt cut over grown hedges then.
you shouldnt mow a lawn either.
dont say, oh it like a hair cut.
did you ask each blade of grass for permission?
the more they watch and comment the more it will be for them recomended
What top dressing do you use?
A mix of moss and sphagnum
Wondering how many of the folk who are concerned about the tree's 'feelings' are vegetarian. lol
Haha never thought about it that way. Not many probably
Bonzi reflects the same philosophy as Chinese foot binding does…making a free, natural life conform to some man*s personal dominance….
With the difference that a bound foot will become an impediment in later life, while a Bonsai can thrive and far outlive its untouched natural counterpart
@@Bonsaifly
Oh well that means you enforcing you petty will on another living thing is the best thing for it, right?
Guess that makes you the God of plants 🤬
@@Bonsaifly^ This is the lorax if it was a karen. It bitches for the trees.
If only common sense was actually common nowadays. However, we don't get that luxury. Someone's gotta humanize fucking plants, maybe even give it one of those shiny *NEW* genders and bother mentally sane people online with their stupidity.
If you ever have a failed project, send us a video of it with a woodchipper. I'd say desecrate it in some way, but we both know that you can't do this kind of work and not have a love and respect for nature and plants. You can respect it AND stick it in a woodchipper, though.
@@MKR5210it has nothing to do With being a good of plants. Tell me, how do you Talk to people mowing their lawn? Trimming their hedge? Or having houseplants of any sort?
Na thats wrong. Most plants in Nature are Not free at all. The majority dies Long before adulthood, those Who do survive, have to constantly "Fight" For nutrients, light and water with Others.
Bonsai trees Most of the time are very Well cared For, and very healthy
Wow - are those one of those super expensive bonsai scissors??
Nicely done 👍
I’m curious about something. In the past I’d only ever seen or heard of bonsai trees being to one side of the pot or the other so there was room for the Buddha to sit beneath it. Has this been a recent change or was never a concrete rule?
