    i think the difference is in how people interperet the acronym,, its either that the TARDIS is itself a “relative dimension” or that its for exploring “relative dimensions”. i personally like the singular better as it describes the TARDIS itself, and implies that the tardis interior is its own pocket dimension of some kind.

      @@kyrauniversal Timelords don't call it a Tardis. 😎They speak Gallifreyan. Susan's was the first English word for it, so that's how the Tardis translates it for us and English speaking companions.

      Too bad it doesn't make scientific sense! There are at least three dimensionS (plural) in space.

      I guess it depends on whether you want to consider space as a single dimension - the 5th dimension as Susan thought, or as multiple dimensions, like us Newtonian n00bs, or if you want to consider spacetime as a single dimension like Einstein then you'd probably call it SS* - Self-contained Spacetime! *Ooops - triggered by Nazi-alert, maybe he'd call it SCST instead ... pronounced sext, probably ... ... ...

      It should be "dimensions", though - there are at least three of them in space. The scriptwriter of "An Uneathly Child" seems to have got it wrong and/or the script editor didn't spot it.

    For as loose as the TV movie played it with the continuity, it’s good that the name of the TARDIS is something it essentially officially re-established.

    • @markpostgate2551
      @markpostgate2551 15 днів тому +9

      "Dimensions" is more natural given that it has no "article" preceding it. If it had been Time and the relative dimension in space or time and a relative dimension in space or even time and its relative dimension in space then the singular would have felt natural, so despite the fact that Susan, who coined the acronym, said "dimension", every subsequent repretition pluralised the word "dimension" because it felt like a more natural phrase until they were only reiterating what was already common knowledge. To me it seems quite pedantic and fanboyish to revert to and insist upon the original when the plural was more widely known in the general public. Clearly someone was on set for the entirity of New Who prodiction to say "acshurly I'll think you'll find..." 😂

      Well, as Susan was living in 1960s England, it makes sense she might make up an English word for it. And it also makes sense that the TARDIS would use the English word when translating Gallifreyan.

    Crazy how we went all the way from the second doctor era in 1969 to almost the end of the fourth doctors era in 1979 and the name of the TARDIS wasn’t spelled out ONCE! A entire decade. A generation of kids in the colour era didn’t know the acronym. I know the Pertwee & Baker years weren’t overly focused on the shows past, but it’s still kinda crazy that the full name of the ship didn’t crop up!
    (I also wanted to say the same for the Smith/calapdi era, because without doctors wife it would be mostly absent. But then 12 gave an entire lecture about it and drilled it into the audiences minds in the pilot, so Moffat was definitely making up for lost time with that one!)

      At least Dimensions (plural) is scientifically accurate. It kind of annoys me that NuWho has reinstated the scientifically illiterate "Dimension", which was almost certainly a one-off mistake in the first ever script.

  • @paigehuse8856

  • @e-spaceproductions

    Since the TARDIS' acronym describes what the ship travels through, rather than describe the ship itself, I think 'dimensions' makes more sense.

    • @OverWims
      @OverWims 14 днів тому +2

      but when you refer to the TARDIS, you're referring to the ship itself, not what it travels through. So, it's dimension. The TARDIS is a single, albeit infinitely sized, dimension.

  • @JaydenVarghese
    @JaydenVarghese 14 днів тому +1

    It's so interesting how they go back and forth on whether the acronym refers to what the TARDIS can do or what the TARDIS actually is. It can travel through Time and Relative Dimensions in Space, or it can manipulate Time and Relative Dimension In Space (indicated by its interior)
