First time listening

Roberta Flack has such a beautiful voice. Roberta had a lot of great hits in the 70's such as "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" which was used in the 1971 Clint Eastwood film "Play Misty For Me", "Feel Like Makin' Love" & some great duets with Donny Hathaway "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You".
Yes, that was such a great song in a great movie, loved the both of them 💯💯👍
The first time ever a saw your face is also an outstanding song from her. Keep up the great videos!!!
Yes, my favorite ❤❤
Written about Don MClean, who did American Pie
I was going to say the same thing. I wanted Shon to know some of the back story.
I came to say this! I only learned that about a year ago. I've always loved this song.
Lori Lieberman sang the original, but in my opinion....Roberta vocally owns it. ❤❤
The duet with Donny Hathaway is priceless! "The closer I get to you" and "Where is the love?"🥰
👌👍
Absolutely! I love “The Closer I Get to You” since It’s release in the late 70s.
This is the finest version of this song, Robert Flack is an amazing vocalist, this is perfect.
Imagine being a teenage girl & hearing this on your little transistor radio in 1973.
That was me.
This song was written about a live concert performance by Don McLean, specifically his song Empty Chairs.
Roberta Flack OWNED the airwaves with this song. This was written by Lori Lieberman after seeing Don McLean in concert.
Shon. I love your emotional intelligence. You just seem to get the songs immediately. Sometimes more than i have after hearing them for 50 years! 😂
IKR? I keep saying that on his page because every time he does a reaction I’m like damn he swallowed the whole meaning of that song in like 30 seconds. It’s uncanny.
She trained as an opera singer, and it shows. Sublime vocals, smooth as silk.
Her voice is crystal clear
Some other hits are..., "the Closer I get to you" (GREAT song), "Where is the Love" "If Ever I See You Again" "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" Her vocals were amazing and angelic
Roberta Flack was ridiculous. Underrated I feel and one of the greatest vocalists ever
I agree
You have found one of the most angelic voices in the past six decades.
This beautiful lady was a school teacher before she finally hit it big what great luck for us she has a fantastic voice
Knew you'd love this one, Shon, A perfect song. And a song that is equally as amazing is, 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'.
"The Closer I Get To You" is fantastic.
Love her song I love this version first but I can’t help but say Lauren Hill did a beautiful beautiful job both favorites. ❤
Yes I was waiting for the beat to drop lol
I remember this song from the 70's, so sweet , so beautiful, the vocals - amazing!
Roberta Flack was phenomenal. Great pipes❤
The best version and the original 👍👍🏴
Shon, one of the many things I love about your channel is you'll listen to songs that I would never expect. Even if you never plan to listen to them again, it's such a treat to see you experience the music of my youth (and before). You're one cool human!
She has the voice of an angel!
Awards were well deserved. 50 plus years later, still a FAV
Ms. Flack's voice has always given me the best chills, since I was a kid. What a phenomenal talent.
One of my favorite's from the 70's, her voice is so soothing 😌 ✨️ 💕 love Roberta Flack. Peace 😍✌️ and Love ❤️ your 70 year old forever Young Hippie Gary 🕺💃 Great Reaction👍
Seeing her sing these songs live/video, you can see the emotions. Voice of an angel.
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is an even more beautiful song. Written by Ewan McColl, but Roberta Flack's is the definitive version. There's a great video of her playing the piano and singing it live, but the studio version is also wonderful.
"The First Time Ever..." Yeah, I think she's killed me a few times. What an incredible voice and true vocal talent.
Roberta Flack is an icon! Her voice is so very beautiful! Love your reaction!
Bro, I CANNOT WAIT for you to react to the cover of this song by The Fugees! Late 90s R&B/Hip Hop sound. You’re gonna love Lauryn Hill’s rendition of this.
Yes! Shon please give this version a listen. You really will love it.
Fair enough, but to me the Fugees' version is a lame cover that adds nothing to this definitive version, and takes away Roberta Flack's *exquisite* timbre and phrasing.
This is a cover. It was first released by Laurie Lieberman. Flack first heard the song on a flight into Chicago and knew instantly that she had to record it.
Beautiful. I get chills when I hear this. To me the lyrics illustrate the incredible power music has. Thank you Roberta Flack for singing this and thank you Don McLean for writing it.
The best song she has is ( The first time ever I saw your face ) is a must listen. Thank you brother.
I was a 10-year-old white boy when this came out And couldn't get enough of Miss Roberta Flack ! To this day she is one of my favorites and always will be ! Everything she touched turned to Gold !
"First time ever I saw your face" is a STUNNING song, you must hear it 🥰❤️
Oh man, this brings back many many old fond memories. All over the radio, driving to work and driving home after work, it was on the radio.
Roberta Flack .. " The first time "... ! it;'s Gold dude
I love that you really take in everything you listen to...
I was a 11 year old white girl in Canada and could not get enough of Miss Flack's sliky smooth voice. ❤️ from 🇨🇦
went upstairs to shoot pool at this huge house and party, and there was roberta flack sitting down playing a harp that was part of the decor. about ten people in the room.she was cool as could be. nice moment.always think of that experience when i hear her songs
So many great artists came out of the 60s both groups and solo act… Your rabbit hole will go on for years, and yes, Roberta Flack is in that rabbit hole💙💙
What a fabulous song by Roberta Flack!!!!
Grew up listening to Roberta Flake. Sensational talent.❤
Whenever I think of the iconic Roberta Flack,,
I always end up trying to decide which is more beautiful,, Her piano skills,, Her voice or Herself..I decided,, (D) All of the above. ❤
Written about Don McLean. Beautiful song, she deserved all those Grammys!
I have loved this song all my life she is so good she touches my heart others have covered it but this is the best
I met Roberta in the 80's. We were visiting another resident in her building and we met her in the lobby. She was very sweet and gave me a hug when I told her how much I loved her music. Her building is the famous Dakota building - home to her and many famous people - including John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Such gorgeous harmonies in the background. I've always been in love with this song. Great choice to react to!
Love her voice
🌸 I remember when you reacted to simple Man and it touched me so much because that song is the song I dedicated to my son when he was born and the fact that you were so moved by it really did move me
"The First time Ever I Saw Your Face" will hit you in your feels, Shon.
Oh Boy
This song reminds me of nights out dancing with my beautiful hubby
❣️🤗❣️
Norman Gimbel wrote the lyrics. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. Charles Fox wrote the music and Lori Lieberman was the original singer also helped write it. This version by Roberta though is considered by most (including me) to be the best.
Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack - Where is the Love. And A Song for You by Donny Hathaway is a must
I saw Roberta ca 1988. She opened for, um, Cosby.
Wind beneath my wings, It will make you feel it..
I love Roberta Flack, and her songs remind me of my teen years, being in love for the 1st time! Shon, you have to hear Roberta's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."
As for me, "Wildflower" by Skylark speaks to me as a teen, and "Blackbird" by the Beatles speaks to me as an adult.
This is such a lovely song.
I remember listening to this with my mom in the 70s!
I saw her in Cleveland in the 70's. Peabo Bryson opened for her.❤
This song was written by Lori Lieberman about Don McLean (she'd attended his conference and wrote this); it's Roerta Flack's cover.
Lori Lieberman in 1972. According to Lieberman, the song was inspired by Don McLean, a singer/songwriter famous for his hit "American Pie." After being mesmerized by one of his concerts at the Troubadour theatre in Los Angeles Lieberman wrote a poem on a napkin describing how she felt about McLean's performance and brought it to Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who were writing songs for her new album. Peace out
Im lucky enough to be acquainted with the man who wrote the music to Killing Me Softly, Charles Fox. He gave me a handwritten page of the music and signed it to me. A treasured possession.
She has a million great songs , one of my favorites is actually from a movie and the song is titled "Making Love" I think you'll really enjoy it !
So much my past. Thank you!
Love watching Roberta Flack perform live. Such passion!!!
Excellent choice!!! Classic.
I'm sixty-eight now. When I was a teenager, my first boyfriend played this album lot. So great.
Live Version is Even Better!!!
From what I remember (it was a LONG time ago), she had been a local performer in DC. I think she was playing piano at Mr. Henry’s Tenley Circle (an upscale restaurant & bar) where she was “discovered”. I worked not far from there, and would stop in on my way home from work. I was young, probably only 19 or 20. I’ve been fortunate to enjoy & experience a lot of artists on their way up, and she was one of them. ❤
A couple that hit me hard are "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro, and "Let Her Cry" by Skylark. Very different songs but, both tell the story of my late wife's life. A little eerie how much connection I have with the lyrics of both songs. I played Skylark at her funeral. 9 years and either will cause a small leak in my eyes.
A song that gets me everytime if Jeffrey Osbourn on the wings if love.
My grandparents were married for 50+ years and when my my Grandma died on the operating table on the Friday, my grandpa went to sleep on Saturday night and went to join her. He was ‘on the wings of love, only the two of us together flying high’. True love. X
I looked it up, this song was written Norman Gimbel, music by Charles Fox.
It was written about Don McClean. Check him out performing "Vincent" and you will understand why this was written about him. The list of songs that kill me with lyrics would be way too long but "Vincent" is certainly one of them. It was written about Vincent Van Gogh
A most beautiful song, thank you Shon❤
It’s hard for me now not to expect the beat to drop in and the Fugees version to start. Lauryn Hill does this song such surprising justice.
Roberta Flack was a mainstay while I was in High School in the early 70's. You might consider "Where Is The Love" with Donnie Hathaway. Thanks for this reaction. Peace
B.B. King's "Blues Boys Tune" if you want a song hitting you in your soul ... it's an instrumental, but you'll get the story for sure!
The 2 songs that got me thru my divorce back in the day they were all over the radio are I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and My Life by Billy Joel that gave me strength that I never knew I had.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
……this track is so amazing ! Makes me emotional every time I listen ❤️
First time ever I saw your face is in my opinion, one of the best love songs ever. Studio version is the best
So beautiful version too of Laurynn Hill❤
This is probably her best, but my favorite is "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". as intimate a song as you will ever hear.
Bette Midler - The Rose
India Arie - I’m Ready For Love
Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind
Shon, this was written about Don McLean who wrote American Pie and Vincent.
Absolutely 🔥
Pizza hut in the 70 this and scorpions lady starlight always on jukebox
I was in 11th grade & will ALWAYS love Roberta Flack.
Great song!!!
Shon, from a Baby Boomer, I enjoy you're genuine appreciation for music that is timeless. Also enjoyed your reaction to "Cry Baby" by Janis Joplin album version. I would love to see your reaction to her live performance....... Janis Joplin - Cry Baby [Live in Toronto (1970)]
I was 19 in 1973, and I could so identify with songs that felt personal to me. My personal song would be "What Do You Want the Girl to Do" by Lowell George.
Yooo Janis Joplin and Tom jones have a joint together. Check it out
August 1969 Janis was performing at Woodstock, and on December 4,1969 she was on The Tom Jones Show singing "Raise Your Hand"🤚 with Tom, great performance! And 10 months later October 4, 1970 she left us. Janis RIP 🙏
@ yes thank you, not a lot of people recognize what Janis truly meant to people and how she inspired a lot of artist including me you see my pfp. The industry tried to undervalue her work for being too real. So I can appreciate any comment I see about her work.
Lauryn Hill from the Fugees did an awesome remake of this song. It's a classic.
Charles Fox & Norman Gimbel wrote this song for singer Lori Lieberman. They were inspired by a Don McLean's concert that Lori attended. I think you've already reacted to 'American Pie' and ' Vincent (Starry Night)'.
The guy she’s singing about is Don McLean who sang American Pie and Vincent to name just a couple songs.
🌸 the song always made me so sad
I'm always for originals, but this slam. She it for me!
Teddy Perndergrass: "If You Don't Know Me By Now."
Please review the rest of her songs. Amazing singer.
Ttry Olivia Newton-John: "Sam" and/or "Come On Over". Olivia had the same tenderness as Roberta.
