Having 3 guys approach him in an intimidating fashion like they were following him is pretty unusual considering they are all soldiers and Vito was a capo so this was out of line. As far as Vito was concern they were there to eliminate him.
Fun fact: When Vito is driving away, you can see the guy in a tracksuit slips and gets his foot run over by a car. You can later see him limping a bit. That wasn't in the script, he actually got his foot run over

I really think AJ would years later try to figure out who had his father killed and then go try try to kill them. Probably fail spectacularly like he did trying to kill Junior but he’d try. He had breaking points that would lead him to snap and likely become dangerous. Benny not so much, even taking orders to do violent mob stuff he’s still not frightening.
Vito was still a captain at that point , they couldn’t force him to do anything really. If he would have went in it would have been his word vs the guy why saw him and Vito is a made man so he would have won but he would have been on borrowed time

Size has definitely never been a factor in the mob. If I remember correctly, Meyer Lansky, Toto Riina, and Carlo Gambino weren't taller than 165 cm. The shorter guys tend to have more brains, kinda like Patsy who was 162 cm. What made Benny so special was despite being short, he always went physical. A brute. Admittedly it was never usually in his favour, at least on-screen. But he definitely had his fair share of blood and bones under his belt to work for the family.
I think both groups probably could have handled that a little smoother and gotten away with what they were trying to get away with. At that time anyway. Not too slick to show up all menacingly three deep like that, not like Vito couldn't do the math there.
