How To Install A Drain Pan Heater On A Cold Weather Heat Pump

  • Heat pumps accumulate ice/frost in the heating cycle on the outdoor unit. During the defrost cycle, the ice/frost will melt and water will drain out the bottom. In cold weather applications, you may need a pan heater so the water does not re-freeze into ice. Ice accumulation at the bottom of the outdoor pan can cause issues with fan obstruction and potentially cause coil damage if the ice is allowed to build up underneath coil. In this video, we install an OEM drain pan heater on a Daikin outdoor heat pump unit.

Termination thermostat in transparent tube suppose to go close to ice buildup area. Not away.

It only need to sense outdoor temperature, not the presence of ice.

Are those heaters Daikin specific or universal
    Where can I purchase one
What's your thoughts on a drain pan below the condenser, I have a fujitsu heat pump condenser that produces lots of condensation.

Cool stuff. Working in the northeast this is invaluable.

I had my HVAC dealer install an 18K Daikin mini-split, replacing a failed (10 year old) Fujitsu. The Fujitsu cost $5,000, about 13 years ago. I did not want to replace it when it failed, account the high replacement price.
The Fujitsu did not have a pan heater, and was a constant problem with ice build-up in our West Michigan winters. I had to take the top off and frequently pour hot water over the coils.
The Daikin salesman said I did not need a pan heater, but he was wrong. After a two inch(!) ice build-up on the exterior coils, the service tech came out, adjusted the weight of the refrigerant, and installed a drain pan heater.
If you are in a cold climate, make sure to wall mount (or platform mount) the outdoor unit well above your winter snow cover, build a sloped cover over the unit (tall enough to allow servicing), and always insist on a pan heater.
Also, my installer mentioned that a ten year service life was good -- he said that in Florida, where he had installed mini-splits, they usually did not last that long! "Modern" mini-splits are a good idea, that still have a way to go before they are reliable and a good value. They are very complicated to service, and cleaning the inside units is difficult (at best). Buyer beware!

I literally just intsalled 2 goodman 24k mini splits with cool bot pros and found out they didnt come with heaters. Lol. Apparently goodman doesn't sell pan heaters so i fabricated livestock water bowl elements to fit in the bottom for now under them unitl i could figure out a more permanent solution. I wonder if these dankin kits will work for the sister goodman condensors.

Efficiency, I’m not sure. But longevity of the equipment 100%, I’ve seen so many coils messed up from ice and yes a couple chipped fan blades.

How efficient is it if the fan blade is stuck on ice?

Sir, will you please explain or cover, how to recharge refrigerant a heat pump during winter specially ambient is below zero C.
    Thanks

Mini-splits are far too complicated for a layman to trouble shoot, and/or recharge. Follow the owners manual for trouble advice, and call a service man if you cannot find a fix. It takes expensive special tools and special knowlege to charge them. Even the length of the refrigerant line needs to be taken into account when charging the system.

Interesting video, was this installed as a result of a failure due to freezing up, or just a preventative install?

Must be a Daikin. Only brand that sells it separately even tho it needs it. Lol

so is this heat pump specifically for cold climate? I know they make some that are compatible with very low temperatures while retaining good COPs..... Was wondering if those specialty cold-climate heat pumps even had reversing valves for AC or if they were only ever meant to be run as heating.

    • @HVACKnowItAll

Yes the have reversing valves for AC most definitely
