      @@BentleyHouseMinis Absolutely true. LOL Thanks for cheering me up with your quick wit! The results of your first try were not bad. It has inspired me to give it a try in miniature. I mostly do 1:144 scale, so that will require an eyelash as a paintbrush? LOL

    I'm all over that easy cutter. It looks so much quicker than my gosh darned miter box.

      haha - me too. I have been eyeing one of those for quite a while. I saw Joanne's minis using them and wanted one. They are kinda expensive for me atm, but def on my must have list. They sell them at the Menards where I live. I got the miter box and saw because of you and Square to Spare, but I think this is much easier. AND it cuts wood up to 1/2" thick - I think!

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 років тому +3

      The nice thing about these easy cutters is that they can be taken apart and sharpened like a pair of scissors. (Make sure when you get ready to purchase one to check that it has a bolt that you can loosen to remove the blade). This is a fantastic feature because you don't have to re-buy it when it gets dull... just get it sharpened! ;)

  • @joannecarroll5504
    @joannecarroll5504 5 років тому

    Even without the correct brushes, you did great, Ara. Could be worth pre-watching your next one in order to get a supplies list, as stippling/stenciling brushes & wide flat brushes would be ideal for this piece.

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 років тому +1

      Yes it would make for less pausing for sure! However this is kind of how it would have been back when the TV show aired lol. If you wanted to follow along you just had to hope you had the right stuff... and no pausing! ;)

    • @joannecarroll5504
      @joannecarroll5504 5 років тому

      That never even crossed my mind that pausing wasn't an option back then. Gosh, what a horrible thought. Far from relaxed learning! LOL. I used to watch The Art Sherpa's live streams & there was a few people there who made a point of painting along while Cinnamon was teaching the lesson (like the more advanced painters do). Sadly they were not skilled enough to paint along, as they were beginners like me & could have learned so much by observing her first. Instead they spent the whole time, asking for things to be repeated because they weren't watching or listening. My favourite bit was them wanting a traceable (traced line drawing of the finished project) BEFORE the lesson began, but not seeing any irony in that. LOL.

    Ok you got me on this one😁 even tho it was 3 yrs ago..Bob Ross never gets old! I am going to try this...just got a cheap lil oil set..always wanted to try oil painting..what better way than with The Ross Man! This was comical..loved it..I would be doing the same thing, he is too fast for me..its funny because he speaks so calm and slow..but yet paints so fast..that's like pating your head and rubbing your belly at the same time 🤣 ..I love how your painting turned out 💖 especially for a miniature..love the scene. I'll have ta pick one to do.. He has a supernatural way of glueing you stuck with his majestic and mesmerizing happy lil friends..we don't care let's put him right here..😆 ..not a care in the world when we're painting with The Bob🥴

      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 років тому +1

      I see your point Connie! For a painting that you're going to complete in 30 mins, it's probably not necessary to use oil paint. They are the best for when you plan to work on a painting over several days and still be able to blend and move around the paint. Thanks for commenting!

    You get an A+ for effort. Watching you made me want to try doing a BRoss painting. I did one before - a life sized one on a real canvas with real oil paints a long long time ago. I gave it to my uncle who has it hanging on a wall in his house. Never thought to do it in miniature. I like oils, but as you noticed - they take a LONG LONG time to dry. That's why the master's used them - they could work on a painting for weeks or months without being afraid that they would be dry. I'd never used oils before and didn't know that about them either - I'd only worked with acrylics really. So I did a couple of canvases and put them on the back porch where we stored all our winter coats thinking it would be dry within a few hours. Well, like a week or two later, we needed to rearrange some stuff so someone leaned the canvases against the coats - I thought nothing of it since I thought they were dry already - when we moved the canvases - oil paint was all over the sleeves of the coats! And it took weeks longer still to completely dry so I put the oils away until I could have a reasonably safe place to store and dry finished paintings. I looked online after that and that's how I learned about that. Never used water soluble oils even though I think I have a small pack of Reeves in my stash somewhere. Suggestion: I think you half right - you used the right brush, but you needed at least two. That one thin edge could not do some of the strokes. You need that thin brush for the fine lines and details and a slightly thicker/blunter brush for smooth blending and pouncing strokes. You also could have mixed bigger batches of color and loaded your brush with more paint because the colors seem very translucent and blended together compared to the tutorial. The effect is STILL really great though - I think you captured the essence of a winter cabin very nicely. It's a bit more abstract, but lovely to see all the same and I think it would look lovely in a miniature gallery or library! PS - don't forget to sign your painting!! :D Well done. And I may get out my oils (or acrylics) and do one too. If I do I will add a link to this video as my inspiration!

    • @BentleyHouseMinis
      @BentleyHouseMinis  5 років тому

      Thank you! Did you ever get the paint off of the coats?? What a way to learn about oil paint drying times! I agree that the colors did seem transluscent and def not as bright as Bob's colors. I was also hampered by the lack of room on my palette. That was just for fun and I will never do that again lol. I think if I had more room to pull up paint that would have helped too. Thanks for checking out my video!

    Came to your channel from Jazza’s channel. You’re AMAZING! I love Bob! If you check out the art on my channel that I’ve done, you’ll see many Bob Ross rip-offs. I am sensitive to smell too. I use odorless mineral spirits to thin my oil paint. It still has a smell but it’s very little. I put it in a small bottle with a dropper to minimize the smell. Hope this helps!
    Edit: I use markers designed to cover scratches on furniture to stain my wood or some watered down acrylic paint.

      Wow you have some really cool sculptures too! Thanks for sharing with me😊 Thanks for the tip on the odorless spirits. I don't think they had that when I tool oil painting in college or I would have gone for it! Thanks for checking out my channel!💖

      Bentley House Minis thanks! I’ve just started back sculpting. I found that the odorless mineral spirits at Hobby Lobby are far more expensive than the hardware store but no different!

    Whoa. I'm here cuz you jacked Jazza's channel but dang. I am Impressed!!! Usually the hardest part of following a Bob Ross Tutorial is keeping up and you managed to do that IN MINIATURE. FANTASTIC JOB

      Thank you for checking out my channel and your kind words! I did pause it a few times I remember... I can't imagine anyone being able to follow back when it was on PBS and there was no pause in sight lol!

      @@BentleyHouseMinis I hear a lot of stories of people who recorded it on VHS so that way they could pause Bob just to keep up. Haha It's not uncommon to pause Bob during his tutorial just to catch up. I've seen plenty of them in regular size who pause no less than 10 times because they're trying to follow along and just can't. Still. You did a fantastic job and the kind words are free. Keep up the good work

      You could try it yourself! It's how I got into painting, myself. Michael's was having a big sale - got some 2"x2" canvas board, an artist loft box of itty bitty tubes, and some decent looking brushes. I believe I spent under US$10, and now I have far more painting supplies, in different brands, and the most important thing for me is to learn, grow, and have fun.
      I highly recommend experimenting with no expectations.
      Regardless, you should give it a shot.
      Thank you for making and sharing this!!!
