  • In today's flip or rather today's makeover I am transforming kitchen countertops! I will take tired, dated laminate counters and give them a fresh modern look for under $150 saving you $1000s. Using products you can purchase from your local hardware store makes this budget-friendly makeover so easy! So good hope you enjoy the before and after xx
    Disclaimer about the top coat: There is concern that the product I chose was not food safe. After doing my research here is a very brief overview of my personal opinion. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) can be found in polyacrylic, polyurethane, and in epoxy. The way VOCs work is that they are present in the liquid form of these finishes it is what keeps these liquids...liquid!. It is in the liquid form and during the drying process that these VOCs can be harmful to humans. Once these VOC solvents evaporate what is left are the non-toxic ingredients. This is the way most finishes work.
    While my choice was not "FDA" approved it is a water-based low VOC polyurethane that was the best option for this job. Some important things to remember in the application of this finish I chose: thin coats, ample dry times between, and a full 30-day cure time.
    Like I did I would always encourage others to do their own research when wanting to start any project and make sure you are confident in your choices going forward. Thanks guys.

    Great job! How generous of you to help them out with the counters. I hope you can show us the finished kitchen when it's all done. I don't know if you ever us epoxy/resin, but if you do.....ArtResin is the best I have ever used. ArtResin is non-toxic (when used as directed) so it's not bad for your health like other resins. No VOCs. No fumes. No solvents. Non-flammable. Non-hazardous. They are a bit more expensive because they don't add all the dangerous fillers. This isn't an advertisement for them 😆 I just love the product!
    Blessings, Kim.

    About 30 years ago I painted my butter yellow laminate counter tops with oil paint and oil polyurethane I used satin. The successful way is a good scuff sand after a great degreaser and rinse thin coats in multiple layers lightly sanded. And I used a brush for all of it. I didn’t count on it lasting but it seriously lasted almost two decades with two kids and they were not kind to it! I ended up redoing the place where they would cut things on it and set pans but that was maybe 15 years in! I lightly sanded it all and repainted two pant coats where damaged and one the rest so it would not look different if the color was not exact and 3 coats of poly. It still looked good when we tore down that house and rebuilt.....it was a two room 1886 school house that was turned into a home in the late 30’s. Built with full dimensional lumber and square nails and no insulation! It was too expensive to repair so now I have soapstone counter I absolutely love. Still I truly loved that old quirky house!
    You did awesome and I hope these newer products will work as well for you as the ones I used 3 decades ago! 🥰🤞🏻

    That looks amazing. My only question is: is it food safe being floor polyurethane also some polyurethanes turn yellow will that happen?

    • @VintageAndPainted
      @VintageAndPainted  2 роки тому +1

      Great questions. Before starting I did research best options for sealing and landed on this low VOC water based sealer.
      The VOCs are present in the liquid form and evaporate during the drying process. With the thin coats and plenty of dry time to fully cure the floor poly was a good option I felt.
      Everyone’s health and safety was a primary concern.
      As far as the yellowing I guess time will tell I knew that about polyurethane and will definitely be doing an update at around 6 and 12 months to see how it’s holding up. Hope this was helpful for you Annetta.

    I think they look fantastic! That was smart to use polyurethane for floors because countertops see a lot of use! It’s also a great way to not have to replace the countertops and give them a fresh look! Years ago we refinished laminate countertops with that speckled rock finish paint and topped it with epoxy. It turned out ok but this method may have been better. I wanted to freshen up our old kitchen and not have to replace the countertops. Since then we ripped out the old kitchen and completely remodeled. You did an amazing job!

      Over 35 years ago I had that happen via tenants. I sanded away the bubbled, loose and burnt bits, sealed it with bondo, sanded it smooth and painted the countertops. Back then the selection of products was a bit limited but it worked. It wasn't perfect but it was better than before. Would love to see a follow up as to how they are holding up. 6 months, a year later. Thanks. I recently did my bathroom counter tops and have run into a couple minor probs. Wondering if you'll have any unforeseen issues. Example, didn't think about my daughter's setting the hair straightener on the counter. Ya, no..... Do not set hot plates, pans, irons, etc on counters. Be sure you use pot holder or something to protect the counters. The heat, if hot enough will melt through paint.

      Oh definitely! I'm pretty sure that even though it has an oven they never use it so that will be one less thing to worry about. Will definitely keep you posted ☺️

      @@VintageAndPainted Thank you. I was surprised that there aren't more videos about people using a clear top coat over their painted countertops. I also considered using the polyurethane floor coat but during my research I concluded that because of the type of countertop paint that I used (Rust-Oleum countertop paint) it would probably be best for me to use the miniwax polycrylic. But it took me a while to come to that conclusion because there wasn't much info out there. I was concerned that there might be a chemical reaction if I wasn't careful in the choice of top coat. I tested a small area and it seems to be fine. I have yet to finish the clear top coat. I might give the polyurethane a try as well I'll just test a small area first.

I need to redo my counter tops in my kitchen and I don't want to use epoxy and have been trying g to work out what I can use instead, I'm so wrapped because now I know I can do then without using epoxy 👏👏👏,
    Thank you thank you, thank you I can't wait till it warms up ,because I'm definitely going to go the route you've just shown because this looks amazing and it's going to be durable, my only question is if I wanted to put a colour before the top coat of floor stuff ,can I still do that? And what type of paint would you recommend for the colour coat? Thankyou so so much you made my day, hope you guys are all well,

      Hey Mary 🥰 I’m so glad you found this helpful. Epoxy is just not for me and had to find an alternative this seemed to be a good option.
      As far as the colour layer I don’t see why not. I think if it’s cabinet paint it would work no matter the colour. I guess you could also use a latex paint but I have not used that before so I don’t know how durable it would be. The thing with the cabinet paint I used it’s formulated for cabinets and oil enriched so it has more stickability 😆 Ivey Bunnings would have a cabinet paint.
      Hope your having a great week xx

    Hi Sarah. I did my countertops as well. It’s been probably two years and I have a lot of chips in it. I have Valspar’s professional bonding primer. Is that the same thing? I just did a melamine wall unit and used a different primer and it was a nightmare. Maybe I should try that floor product you used. I was maybe going to peel the laminate off. I guess I couldn’t hurt it. I painted mine medium gray and then went over it with light gray DIY paint using IOD’s marble stamp. Then a load of coats of PolyAcrylic. But it is still looking good. Just a few chips.

    • @VintageAndPainted
      @VintageAndPainted  2 роки тому

      I think that primer is the same thing. It stuck so well the the counter giving me a good base for the cabinet paint.
      I’ll be interested to see if the counters I did hold up. There probably will be chips and scratches but only time will tell. I’ll definitely share and see if it was a good choice or not.

  • @kathystivers3928

    My concern is if that floor poly is safe to use on surfaces where food may be prepared? I would have checked with the manufacturer first. There are chemicals in floor poly that should not be used on surfaces that food is prepared. It’s durable however, the counter Epoxies are formulated for counters knowing food preparation is a consideration.

    • @VintageAndPainted
      @VintageAndPainted  2 роки тому

      Kathy thanks for bringing this up I can understand the concern. Before committing to this I did research the different types of protection I could use. After this research I felt a water based poly with low VOC was my best choice. I still stand by my hesitation to use epoxy.
      The solvents found in a lot of wood finishes are present in the liquid form of the poly. The water based poly has a lot less of these solvents. When applied thinly and once evaporated the harmful solvents are gone. The poly I chose was low VOC and water based. I applied it in thin layers with 30 days to fully cure before it will be used by the leaders at the learning center.
      I feel confident in my choice and would not do something with out the health and safety of others in mind.
      Hope this helps alleviate some of your concern.

    * Try painting the back spaces FIRST to avoid brushing up against or disturbing the front areas or areas painted that are closest to you.
    * THE Best Preparation Leaves Less Clean Up... Try Painters tape

    Now that a year has rolled around, do you know how the counters held up? I have bizarre shaped counters and it would be outrageous to replace and I’ve agonized over painting. I have allergy problems triggered by smells and finding something low odor hasn’t been easy. I found one top coat by Giani but it’s high gloss. Isn’t satin a thing on counters?

    • @VintageAndPainted

      I think it is all personal preference for the sheen you want. The counters held up well but we used them minimally. I also just recently ripped them all out because we had damage to the outside wall and had to raise the whole side.

      They definitely would yellow. I was not worried about this, as the owners of the kitchen had a color scheme that the ambering wouldn’t matter.
      The best non-yellowing topcoat would be a polycrylic waterbase. I would also do research before putting it on your countertop. I did research and was happy with my choice.

    I don't mean this as an insult to the person who uploaded this video, because I don't think they did anything wrong. I just don't think painted countertops look good. I've never seen any that have. If you look closely you can see the streaks. I'm wondering if most of the people commenting watched this video on a phone or iPad. On a desktop I can see all the flaws. Painting is still a viable option if that's all the budget allows for, and in this case it does look better than before the paint as far as I can tell, but it still doesn't look good.
    I watched a couple more of these countertop painting videos recently, and this does look better than the rest.
    Is the poly food safe, though?

    • @VintageAndPainted

      Not insulted. You are correct there were some streaks but like you said it was much better than what was there before. I was giving this a try and for a temporary solution it is a good one…imperfections and all.
      The people who watched and commented are/were being supportive of me and don’t expect a machine finish from a human.
      I appreciate you point of view and the respectful way in which you worded your comment. Thank you for this interaction.

    Food safe?

    • @VintageAndPainted
      @VintageAndPainted  2 роки тому

      Appreciate the check in Shari. I placed this in my description hope it helps your question.
