God damn i miss these years. Hearing all these names announced together makes me so nostalgic. These were the glory years of UT. i feel lucky that i got to grow up watching and learning about football during them. We were vicious
Actually the 90's were just one of Tennessee's decades of glory. The 30's thru 50's were one long winning streak for Tennessee, led most of those seasons by the man the stadium is named after. Then the late 60's, Tennessee had two National Top 5 finishes, early 70's were 10 & 11 win seasons, as Joel Anthony referenced. Coach Majors returned in late 70's to rebuild and won 3 SEC titles in the mid-to-late 80's. Then, of course the 90's and early 2000's were full of Top 10 finishes. Something went out of the program that night in Atlanta in 2001, SEC title game, Vols heavy favorites vs LSU and an emotional letdown from winning in Gainesville the week before along with Fulmer's mediocre game coaching. We still have Cutcliffe as OC that season, we win another SEC and play Miami for the national title. Not been the same since even though there were very good teams thru the mid-2000's.
As an Ohio state fan, huge amount of respect for your fan base. Y’all have been down for who knows how long and y’all still get up every Saturday like your undefeated. Something to admire!
@@burntcorndogs3 Well, you gotta root for your team no matter how bad they are. Thats something the haters will never understand. Tennessee was so good that year. What was so funny was that this is what Peyton Manning was supposed to do but instead it was his backup who finally got a chance to show the country how good a collegiate QB he was.
Yes, MArtin was an accurate passer, could run well, and had that "it" factor that made him a winner. That defense was just NASTY, the line was big, experienced, and well-coached by Fulmer, and the backfield had both Jamal Lewis and Travis Henry, plus the great Travis Stephens who racked up more yards than both. The great Shawn Bryson was a weapon. There were some good leaders on this team, and the season had everything it took to be champions, including luck against Arkansas with that Clint Stoerner fumble. But you still have to do get it done on the field, they still had to run it up Arkansas' guts after that fumble. Actually, I had forgotten how close this game was, Tennessee had chances to put it away and didn't and FSU still had a chance to win with a minute left. Fulmer wasn't the most imaginative offensive genius, you don't have to be with that line and those backs, but I do give him credit for airing it out in this game and winning the Natty. The next year's team was even better, IMO, but they didn't get the breaks like the '98 team. Go Vols, we're back!
Well, 10 years down the road, the Vols are definitely back in it, and FSU looks like they're building something, too. Time to knock back those Georgia, Bama, Clemson, OSU guys a bit.
@@sabster74 I love how you replied to a comment I left 10 years ago. Goes to show how sad the past 10 years have been. But, I am bought in to Heupel. I agree, a couple more years and we may see some real good Tenessee football again.
I guarantee that if Jamaal Lewis wouldn't have gotten hurt in the Auburn game that year.. Tennessee would have run over every single opponent and it wouldn't have been close. But one of the best teams in the 90s. Great chemistry and they played as one. Go Vols!
10 of the 22 starters on offense and defense were 1st or 2nd round draft picks with another 5 of those starters being nfl draft picks in the later rounds. Almost an entire team of NFL draft picks. The team was absolutely LOADED

This game was in 1998, and was the result of the 1997 regular season! Players were still there, who had come to Tennessee because of Peyton Manning. They admitted they think they played harder after he left, and that they probably overly relied on Peyton to win games by himself.
Just imagine if Lewis had been at tailback. But really that's the name of the game in NC type seasons...People step up....without it you CAN NOT win a championship....because people get hurt...
@tribe795 he was drafted 5th round by the pittsburg steelers. he played 4 yrs for them then for philidelphia, the raiders, and NFL europe where he played for the world bowl before goingback to oakland. he left the NFL to pursue a coaching career as a widereceivers coach/scout for the southeastern U.S. for Oregan, Arizona State, and now is at the University of Kentucky.

FSU fan here. Congratulations to Tennessee on that game. I was just glad FSU won it the next year. I would have loved to see what Weinke could have done in that game. Tee Martin really impressed me, though.
@Gunnz287 Could say the same thing regarding Florida State in stopping Jamal Lewis. Tennessee's preseason heisman contender was stricken with an injury at Auburn. The Vols were using their 2nd and 3rd string RB's (which happened to be studs). Not to mention, your All-American Warrick was held to just one catch the entire game, which happened while Dwayne Goodrich (Defensive MVP- Assigned to cover Warrick) had left the game. You guys got your's the next year, but the 99 Fiesta bowl belonged to UT
TaMarice Martin. ( hospital made a mistake on first name.) it was supposed to be ToMarice Martin. the mother of the child wanted it to be To Maurice. but.its all good .WOW WHAT AN ATHLETE. PEYTON WHO? 1999 TENNESSEE VOLS NATIONAL CHAMPION. JOHNNY WHO? CAFEGO WHO.
I don't think you realize how good Tennessee's defense was in 98 lol... That defense would make Weinke not look near as good as he was. Weinke lost to NC State which was un ranked. So to say that TN would probably had lost is not accurate. There are a lot of cases where the starting QB flops vs a team and the back-up comes in and plays even better than the starter.
The FSU kicker made contact with the ball after the onside kick was made so the penalty was the right call. I bleed 🍊 but we had quite a few calls go our way this season not to mention all the calls against us that would have been made today or maybe could have been made then but weren't. But the 1998 season was definitely AMAZING!!! Hopefully the 2022 season will be the same!!! GBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🍊🏈💯
lol at all these ppl 3-4 yrs ago saying you can't get a 3rd string qb ready for a national championship. OSU just done it last year. stop with all the bs excuses UT couldn't be touched that year.
+Brett Howell Marcus Outzen got them there by beating Florida. If Florida State was so concerned about playing Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl with the guy who had been their backup QB all season long (Dan Kendra was hurt in preseason; that "third-string" argument was total BS), then they should have stepped aside and let Ohio State play Tennessee instead. Then there's also the fact that Weinke wasn't any good. Every time he faced a really good defense, he got his butt handed to him. At least Outzen got away from the rush a few times after the Tennessee defense totally whipped FSU at the line.
John Cate Weinke was like 26 years old and had played pro baseball not only that but they called him the rooster and they did some documentary on him before the game as if he'd already wine this game and a super bowl with one hand tied behind his back
Youre right. We were fucking vicious during that era which culminated in this season. Peyton had just left and everyone thought we would start to decline. But then we came back and won the national championship. God damn i miss the glory days of UT... Granted, we definitely declined after 2000

I still remember all you heard was Peter Warrick would eat Tenn. Defense alive he was greatest Athlete FSU had in long time. I think he ended up with 1 catch for 9 yards he did have nice punt return but you would think an awesome athlete could make a move on kicker or at least break tackle not get knocked down like a LB hit him! If Al Wilson had been in Leaverton place on that return he'd destroyed him! This was just start of SEC's BCS Domination!

Weinke struggled with NC State. Tennessee was rotating to freshmen tailbacks because of Jamaal Lewis being out for the season. FSU would have had a hard time dealing with Bryson blocking for Lewis out of that play action power I formation. Ask Steve Spurrier.
@Gunnz287 You're entitled to your opinion. But based on what I remember from that season, Tennessee would've figured Weinke out. And probably put him on his back because UT's front 4 played excellent that entire season. Lets not forget that Weinke was not a mobile QB at all. So he woulda been a sitting duck in the pocket.....
Bryan Allen no, not necessarily. Both teams played pretty bad in this game with stupid mistakes. Tennessee could’ve and should’ve blown FSU out but let them hang around
@@bsallen1212 In correct. He would have been hit often not to mention Tennessee was missing the legendary tailback Jamaal Lewis who went on to win 2 Super Bowls later on. Weinke would have ate as much turf as Miami's Vinny Testavede did in the Sugar Bowl against Tennessee.
FSU was so close to having an MNC dynasty during a five year stretch, but were only able to come away with one during that time. 1996 - Lost to Florida in the MNC championship game. 1997 - Denied a chance to play in MNC championship game with a loss in regular season finale against Florida. 1998 - Lost to Tennessee in BCSCG with a 3rd string QB. 1999 - Won BCS championship. 2000 - Laid an egg against OU and lost in BCSCG. 2000 was the last time they were serious MNC contenders.
And regardless of that Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history with 2 super bowls and 5 mvp's which no player in NFL history has never done

Yes, especially on the offensive line. They were loaded. It was probably the best o-line in UT history. Then again, running backs were loaded as well. Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Travis Stephens, and Shawn Bryson. All of those guys had amazing careers at UT, and all of them played at the same time!
People forget that FSU lost their heisman trophy winning QB a couple games before this game forcing them to start a terrible Marcus Outzen with hardly any game experience. Huge disadvantage.
FSU also beat a ranked GT team that finished #9 in the country with Weinke. So yes, i think FSU with their starting QB would have beaten Tennessee but we will never know.

Keith Jackson called the Fiesta Bowl national championship game in 1999 and did not take it seriously, may he rest in peace.
FSU had many chances to flip that game their way, credit to Tennessee for playing hard nose defense. Peerless was exceptional as well.
Shawn Bryson made it tough to cover on passing because he could block, run and catch so well and was actually faster the Price.
At 5:35-5:50 the vols punter made a game saving play. If he doesn’t Peter Warrick scores and that could have changed the outcome.

@@bsallen1212 Until you give UT Jamal Lewis back, and UT holds the ball all game due to a dominant ground game.
@@raymondlee3414 lol you're delusional
That hit at 6:30 though wow. nowadays he would've been ejected. We need a defense like that

@topdogg757 And had Weinke played we would have at the very least been able to put up another td.
did y’all see #4 on the warwick pr completely not block the kicker
Football is the sport that unite countries
did tee martin make a nfl roster??? what team ???
Pittsburgh
And regardless of that Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history with 2 super bowls and 5 mvp's which no player in NFL history has never done
So what, he didn't do nothing for the Vols but put up stats, Tee Martin brought it home baby, Peyton wasn't on the field in this game 😏
We got so lucky that year! Yeah, they were a good team, but they barely won by last second field goals 3 times.
Oh well I'm sorry :/. I didn't really realize what I put. You're right I shouldn't have said that. I mean don't get me wrong Tennessee is a really nice school. You guys were awesome in the 90s. Sorry again.
I am too, just don't know too much about Nebraska's history!
Yeah I really don't know too much about that team, I was born in 93. Thats why I was asking.
Yeah,if we would have had the recruits that we have under dooley right now with fulmer we would easy be a 10 win team this coming up year. Not only the head coach but dc and ac mean alot too, which we have about all new coaches so maybe we are in for a postive change it might only be a quarter dooley and he's getting all the blame for it because he's the head coach,SUNSERI is the coach i'm most excited about him and graham i like graham he did a good job at sc hopefully he can relate here.GO VOLS
I wish we could have another Tee Martin at UT! Another Tee Martin, Jamal Lewis,Peerles Price,Lenard Little,Al Wilson, you get what i'm saying LOL!! GO VOLS!!
Tennessee had one their most prolific offenses on the field that year
Yes, especially on the offensive line.
