Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthough of Sega's 1989 mascot-platformer for the Sega Genesis, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle.
Alex Kidd was a mascot of sorts for Sega, seemingly designed to challenge Mario. He starred in six games total, most being platformers, but it seems that he really never made the leap to 16-bit as well as Sega had hoped. Enchanted Castle was the sole game in the series to be made for the Genesis. The final game, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, marked a return to the Master System.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle has you guiding your monkey-boy through eleven platforming stages, collecting coins and fleeing in terror from everything that moves. Alex is a bit fragile, you see - a single hit kills him outright - and since a short-range punch is his only standard means of attack, it's often not a good idea to stand your ground and do battle.
There are powerups that can help, though. Alex can win items, like cars and pogo-sticks, that will temporarily give him a boost to make it past certain obstacles or enemies (they are godsends in the final stage!), and he can find secret bonus areas that are loaded with gold if you find yourself chewing through your items too fast.
The feature that Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle seems to be best known (and most reviled) for is the Rock, Paper, Scissors-style battles that you must win to get items and to beat bosses (and if you've place Princess Tomato in Salad Kingdom, you'll be quite familiar with this!). It's neat for how different of an approach this is to a standard action-based boss fight, but c'mon, Sega. Leaving things to blind luck seems a bit unfair, doesn't it?
Besides that inclusion, though, the gameplay is fine. It's a bit mundane and uninspired, but I found it to be fun. Most of the stages are extremely short, so once you memorize where the item blocks and the enemies are, it becomes pretty easy to tear through in no time at all. I think I can see why Sega went back to the Master System for three final Alex Kidd game, though. Enchanted Castle feels like an 8-bit game with more color and nicer music, and the move to the Genesis put expectations upon the game that it couldn't really live up to. Still, it does look and sound nice for a Genesis game from 1989.
If you don't mind the dated gameplay and the corny Janken mini-games, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle can make for an entertaining, nostalgic couple of hours. It's no classic, nor even particularly great, but it is an interesting symbol of a past that Sega was quickly distancing itself from in order to fight its battles with Nintendo.

I found this game to be extremely difficult for some reason. It's entertaining to see someone breeze through it like this
Just save scum
I think if you're new to the game, then it's just babystep. I will say that the janken boss fights seem harder than they actually are. There's ways to manipulate the rng.
@@kagenlim5271 Can't beat it without save states?
@@2012TheAndromeda Its pretty hard and save states are great
the game doesnt tell you what anything does. if you were like me and you played it on the Radica preloaded console, then you had no idea what anything was. plus killing thing with the punches and kicks was finicky at best. you basically needed the power ring to survive at all in this game. but if you died with it on, then it was gone forever. i used to just spend AGES in the first town loading up on power rings so i had a ranged attack for the whole game.
I cannot imagine life without Alex Kidd in the enchanted castle. You just can’t.
its not that deep man
Sadly not a LOT played it
Shit damn near brings tears to my eyes...Hearing that intro, seeing this ancient game that I played when I was such a young kid...What a life.
Do you know why Alex is saying in the paper rock scissors games? I couldn't figure that out
@@jessemartin1876”janken, po!”
One of the games where I never finished the first level
Same lol
Never finished the 3rd level. I’m just here to see if it’s even possible lol
True
The hilarious part, is when Alex eats the Hot dogs🌭 then gets 😫 sick😵. He also kick jumps, like he thinks, he is Wang boss (from Black Belt game)
I was small so of course I didn’t finish the first level
I’m addicted in this game, it was a beautiful memory 😭
same here
Somewhere, somehow, Alex Kidd is in his apartment growing fat eating tubs of ice cream & beer, watching clips of Sonic the Hedgehog failing in his games while waiting for phone calls from Sega.
He at the bar telling girls about his glory days.
They dont care but sometimes they too drunk to say no. So at least there's that. 😕
And at last..the phone call came...
That Fateful Phone call
Just like his father, Thor
Alex Kidd for Hire 😂
back when life was simple happy and I didnt know how tyo pull my weener properly
I thought Rock Paper Scissors was annoying in Color Splash, but here it practically breaks the game.
WaveFront mmhmm
Its been 13 years and i randomly thought of this kid while talking to a friend and getting memories so i had to step down memory lane
its been only 6 or 7 years since i ever seen my brother play this
i remember thinking it was really weird. It still is really weird lol.
Dude I remember playing this back in like 2007 on some kind of sega collection games controller thingy and THIS and the game echo about the dolphin stressed me out as a kid. I wish I could play it one more time
That game console was most likely the Sega Camega, I had one too 😃
Dude you _CAN_ play it. Do you have a PC, or a tablet, or a phone? If you have any of those, then you can emulate the mega drive and any of its games. It's very very very easy to emulate games. Can you open a Word document in Microsoft Word? Then you can emulate games. It's that easy, you download the mega drive emulator, you search for "[game name] ROM" in Google and download the game ROM file, then open it in the emulator, and boom you're playing it again. Use a Bluetooth controller cos touch screen controls suck ass. You can use an xbox 360/xbox one controller for that, or a PS4/PS5 controller, or a switch controller, or any Bluetooth controller you might have. You can download the entire Mega Drive game library and have them all on your phone, because the files are so so tiny that even with thousands of them together they take up barely any space
Never got past 1 level on echo the dolphin
BRO ME TOO!! Same year! I was 10. I had one of those red controllers for Sega and I played this. Man, good times.
You must’ve had the red controller collection?
Alex Kidd is an interesting, charming nod to Sega's Master System days, but it really didn't stand as much more than a stop-gap measure until Sonic the Hedgehog was ready.
That game is from sega
You're quite perceptive.

*_Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle_* is another one of those games that I never experienced back then until *_Sonic's UGC_* on _Xbox 360_ . While not as good as *_Alex Kidd in Miracle World_* & especially *_Alex Kidd in Shinobi World_* , It's still a fine enough game for an early Genesis game.
While the graphics and sound are nothing to write home about, the gameplay is the best part. Think of it like a 16-Bit version of *_Miracle World_* .
It's alright, but I advise skipping out on this one and playing *_Miracle World_* & *_Shinobi World_* .
This always makes me think of that Sega Genesis plug n play, that had like 5 games on it. I remember they'd stop working after a while.
Do you remember what the other 4 games were called?
Camilo Morales gain ground, sonic, eco dolphin
The one with the red controller?
Alex just goes around destroying all the wildlife on Planet Paperock
I remember how cursed this game was and I had nightmares as a kid of it
Idk what it is but this game rubs me in the wrong way

Creeped me out a little too, like the music and stuff. Not as much as Kid Icarus on NES though, I had nightmares over that
How is anything about this game creepy? I was literally the biggest wimp ever as a kid but I never thought this was scary
This was my second game on Mega Drive after Altered Beast which came bundled with the console. This was way before Sonic. I remember it playing noticeably slower than in this video since I was in the Europe PAL region (therefore at 50 Hz)
This is one of the few times I agree with majority critics. This game sucks compared to the amazing miracle world on master system.
I always loved Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle when I was younger. James and Mike slept on Alex Kidd (1986-1991) hard.
This came out in 1989 not 1991 ok 👍 thanks
@@user-cs2py4bi1y I think he meant Alex Kidd's last appearance.
@@cobaltis oh sorry about that but this game was a launch title for genesis

Alex Kidd looks like the kind of game that shouldve had a more extensive series, but it seems all they want to make is more Sonic games people will hate for some reason
knuclear200x I don’t hate Sonic. Thou I do need to get going on that again. If I can

shut up.
I dunno this game isn't really that great lol
@@xSuperFryx Lemme put it this way-
The ideas for a good game are there, the music is nice, the graphics are ok, and the power up system is a nice twist on the traditional 2D platformer, but the game falls flat on the luck system of janken, the fact Alex can only take one hit before dying, and the fact that the controls and hit detection aren't that good.
This game came out the same year as Mario 3. Yeah, you can see why Sega was like "Yeah, this isn't cutting it."

This should have been a launch title in the US. It might have actually stood a chance before the edgier games started coming out. Nobody would even give it a second look when Sonic was BLAST PROCESSING through the Genesis library.
That's exactly what I thought. In 1989 it would've been okay. By 1991, not so much.
I mean...Mario wasn’t edgy around then. And look at him now! Still wearing the crown of the gaming industry. I’m sure Alex could pull it off.
still have this setup and it works great, every bit as weird as I remember.
It was a launch title in North America. This game and the Sega Genesis console were both released on August 14th, 1989. I am curious as to why it wasn’t the pack-in title, instead of Altered Beast? I mean, Alex Kidd was Sega’s mascot back then. Who knows?
@@johnpike7141 Altered Beast was the pack-in title so that it could stand out against the "kiddie" Nintendo games of the time.
Who's ready for Alex Kidd in miracle world DX to come out?
Fuck remakes
@@Joedirt5yeah I’ve bought the old console just so I can play this again the nostalgia ❣️
@@Joedirt5 No fukk u. Remakes are awesome. You're stuck in the stone age.
I heard of Alex Kidd. The mascot of Sega before he had to leave his place to Sonic The Hedgehog.
This game looks nice but it’s just me, or the pogo stick looks like a corkscrew ?
Isn't just you. Also, the master system games of Alex kidd were bether, 'cause this game is cool but, its Too short, and the junkenpo battles are so secundary
He sort of shared the mascot position with Wonder Boy, though many of the Wonder Boy games got reskinned.
Sega's mascot was never really Alex Kidd. That was Opa-Opa, the character from the Fantasy Zone games. And if you didn't know, the Fantasy Zone games were far superior to the Alex Kidd games. They still are some of the best shoot em ups out there. The one I have nostalgia for is the Mega Drive one, Super Fantasy Zone, but there's a few different Fantasy Zone games, the mega drive one was a sequel. The original Fantasy Zone game even got ported to the NES which is pretty funny considering
But yeah there's like 5 different Fantasy Zone games. They all look very similar to each other but they're not. Check them out. They're balls to the wall hard, really really difficult, despite the cutesy appearance
Kid me would have been blown away that you blew past as far as he ever got in a mere 20 minutes. Good Lord
Alex Kidd's first and only foray onto the Genesis, and one of his final games before he was replaced with a certain speedy blue hedgehog.
I never played this game growing up. A couple of years ago I got a Sega genesis that has a ton of games already on it. My 5 year old daughter loves it and plays alex kidd all the time haha.
Just the sound breaking the chest brings back memories.
I like his punching sprite for some reason.
This was the first game I ever played I just bought the mega drive mini for my 4 year old for Xmas and this game built in I can’t wait 🎅🤣
FINALLY!1 I found my childhood game on genesis, I could not remember the name, so I watched HOURS of genesis game videos till I found this, thank you!!
I think Alex Kidd could've been a decent mascot for Sega, but the main issue with the guy is that he had nothing special about him as a character, and thus his games were nothing special.
Mario had mushrooms and different suits that gave him special powers. Link had the Triforce. Sonic could roll into a ball and run really fast. Mega Man could copy the weapons of his defeated enemies, becoming a walking arsenal of destruction. Kirby could eat enemies and copy their powers.
What could Alex Kidd do? What was his special gimmick that made him stand out? Playing Rock Paper Scissors? Punching stuff? He has no special power or anything iconic to build his gameplay around. He was just a guy, and Sega knew they couldn't build a brand on someone as bland as Alex.
EdmacZ true
Peticóptero, moto, lancha, bracelete, bengala mágica, bolsa com miniaturas de clones, invencibilidade temporária, escudo de proteção temporária. Alex Kidd tinha mais recursos que o Mario nos seus primeiros jogos.
Wonderful music for my ears. Alex Kidd is such a ⭐
Omg, I remember playing this game as a very young child, but in the car. My parents had an installation inside it that allowed the kids in the back to play games. This was one of those games.
For anyone curious on how the RNG rotation works, I figured this out about 7-8 years ago when attempting to take the TAS speedrun and modify it for a real game run.
Every boss starts the game on a set seed when the game is first booted. Every janken battle completed or lost will move the RNG seed over by 1 following a Rock-Scissors-Paper flow.
For example, the first part of the speedrun requires us to get the Circlet on level 1. This is always Rock from a fresh reset of the game. The second level we grab the bike in the first hut to speed up the rest of the game. By taking circlet, this bike is now scissors. If we didn't take the circlet, it would be a rock instead.
Each boss starts with their own setup and rotates by 1 for those completions, with the difference being the final boss has two setups.
There was an image floating around from a streamer who played after me that their community had routed up different takes but with this logic you can map out any path you want as you progress the game, making mindful notes of how many janken battles and what the outcomes are for each.
I had this game so many secrets and I loved the rock paper scissors

This is an early Genesis game and it shows. I remember this game getting really negative reviews at the time (and still is)
I am also among those people that don't like this game. I will give it credit that the gameplay itself is fun, but the music and graphics are bland, forgettable, and outclassed by other early Genesis games like *_E-Swat_* and the original *_Streets of Rage_* .
The Master System games are much better than this game (especially Alex Kidd in Shinobi World).
@@Dorian_Scott I think The Enchanted Castle isn't as good as Miracle World and Shinobi World, but better than The Lost Stars and High-Tech World. I think the biggest problem with The Enchanted Castle is that it wasn't much of an advancement over Miracle World, despite being released three years later and for a more powerful console. Miracle World was Sega's response to Nintendo's Super Mario Bros., but The Enchanted Castle was no competition for Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.
@@Dorian_Scott bro youre on the sega genesis graphics weren't a priority
This is one of those games that you had for some reason and you have to load up when having a fever and are staying at home from school just because you just didn't have very many games. I remember playing through this game and hating the mediocrity all the way through.
@@cadenz2729 Let's not pretend Genesis/Mega Drive games can't look good, because they can, and sometimes better than the SNES when it comes to resolution, animation, etc
Takes me back to my childhood!
I’ve still got my mega drive with all the games! The good old 16bit gets used all the time
12:09 for donda
It really grows on you
The Sky Castle level (Final Level) was insanely hard, but thanks to the PS4 Mega Drive Game I was able to beat it with the rewind feature.
So this is the fabled Alex Kidd, Sega's original platforming mascot series until a certain fast blue guy showed up. Enthralling gameplay! There's Rock Paper Scissors, what's not to love! The Alex Kidd games are charming in their simplicity. I like the music and the silly lighthearted tone. Fun fact: in the Japanese version, the loser of Janken would become spontaneously naked for comedic effect with a little leaf or something covering their privates! Maybe it was changed to something less risque for the US.
*_Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle_* is alright, but it doesn't compare to *_Miracle World_* & especially *_Shinobi World_* on the Master System. Playing those before the Genesis game, you really notice the bland music and graphics. The gameplay itself is still fun all things considered, but it's not enough for this game to outshine the Master System games.
Pass on it and stick the the Master System titles.

the ai is supposed to, with the exception of bosses, choose a feedback loop of choices stronger than your last choice.. if you try to disrupt them by choosing something weaker than your last choice, you should always paradoxically win... except the ai seems to have stopped doing that in this scenario for some reason.
