  • A playthrough of Sega's 1992 platformer for the Sega Genesis, Kid Chameleon.
This playthrough shows the direct path through the game. There are over a hundred stages, and since taking the alternate paths usually requires skipping some of the "main" stages, I stuck to taking the stage exits that are marked by flags.
If my memory serves me correctly, Kid Chameleon was a fairly big deal when it was released. The TV and magazine ads leaned heavily on the "edgy attitude" shtick that Sega was becoming increasingly known for, and the game was seeing a run of positive reviews in the gaming magazines.
The game's setup was unexpectedly "meta" in an era where video games rarely acknowledged their own existence. Kid Chameleon centers around the hottest new machine at the local arcade - it seems that people playing it are being kidnapped by the game's villain, and Kid Chameleon takes it upon himself to set things right. It's a video game within a video game, with some light social commentary garnish on the side.
Once he's in, Kid Chameleon becomes the hero of one of the largest, most ambitious platformers on the Genesis. There are over a hundred levels to make it through, each brimming with secret exits, hidden power-up caches, and careful platforming challenges. There are hats that Kid can find hidden in blocks that give him a multitude of different abilities, and many of the stages are built around these mechanics. He can find a samurai hat and cut things down with his katana, a metal-bladed hat lets him bash through rock walls, a motorcycle helmet allows him to dash around on an engine-propelled scooter - there are tons of possibilities, and you'll need to familiarize yourself with them all if you're going to make it to the end. My personal favorite has to be the hockey mask that turns you into a hatchet-tossing Rick from Splatterhouse.
Knowing your abilities is essential because the game is not at all easy - in fact, Kid Chameleon might be one of the most consistently challenging platformers of the 16-bit generation. Its mechanics and emphasis on exploration make it feel like an alternate take on the Super Mario Bros. 3 formula, but the bloodthirsty enemies, labyrinthine level layouts, and the lack of any save or password features make this a title that will last even the best gamers quite awhile. I found challenge to be a refreshing change of pace from the typically easy games of the genre, but be warned that success here demands a sustained, concentrated effort.
But Kid Chameleon happily repays everything you put into it. There are always new stages to find, and over time you'll eventually figure out a strategy for which path serves you best. For instance, I very purposely avoided the Bloody Swamp stage in this playthrough. I had little confidence that I could pass the stage without blowing through half my continues, but that's one of the best things about Kid Chameleon. You nearly always have a choice, and you can play the game as you want to play it. Furthermore, there is an incredible diversity to be found among the level's designs so there's little risk of getting bored. You won't likely see everything the game has to offer until you've gone through it dozens of times.
Kid Chameleon is an excellent old-school platformer. It doesn't hold your hand, and it never goes easy on you, but surmounting these odds offers a huge sense of accomplishment. I'm glad that it is being included on the Genesis Mini so that more people will have the opportunity to experience this forgotten classic from the days when Sega was on top.

This was the very first video game I ever worked on! It's truely wild to watch this and have serious flashbacks of building some of the levels! Also remembering one of the designers, Rick Macaraeg, and one of the artists, Alan Ackerman, who have both since passed away!!
It's great to see so many comments here of people who remember and loved the game, even if it was stupid hard to finish all the way to the end!! (You can blame Mark Cerny and Hoyt Ng for that!!)

If you like your platformers tough and packed with an endless supply of levels and secrets, Kid Chameleon pulls off the Mario 3 style of gameplay better than just about any other Genesis game. There's a lot to sink your teeth into here.

Ah, Kid Chameleon. I remember playing the sh** out of this game back in the day, and it's still as fun as I remember it being.
The best and most efficient way I can review this game is *_It's Sega's answer to Super Mario Bros 3_*
The graphics are nice and colorful, the music is great, the controls are solid... But, the acceleration is like Super Mario 2. You go to top speed in less than a second.
I think that 100 levels without any sort of save or password system is overkill. Especially with how frustrating the game can be at times. But, the game is still plenty fun.
It was a good call for M2 to put this game on the Genesis Mini.

One of my absolute favorite games! Never forget when I played over 80 levels and left my Sega on to go to school.
The despair was total when I came home and realized that my dad turned off the Sega. "Electricity is expensive!"
I managed to complete the whole game during a Christmas break! Still owns the console and the game and sometimes plays to keep the nostalgia up.
Over the years, I have honed my technique and can now complete many levels in a few seconds with the "right" character to gain extra points.

@@Solo407 Yep, no problem to play it thru! I beat it in 1992 already several times. Great game! One of the best games for the Mega Drive! One of the best platformers of all time. Great music, too. It's a bit long though, and without saving ability... but it Emulation times with load and save state, it's awesome of course! :)

    Still epic to this day.

I had this on a genesis plug and play along with 5 other games. My mom and i would sit there and play it for hours on end. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and she'd be playing and pushing through level after level used to know quite a few hidden secrets in the early levels

I actually beat this game and used a poster board to map every level. I still have the original game copy. The music is in my head forever.

@Lim Peh Ka Li Kong. I agree with you on the memories bro. I remember getting really far in this game. Then I got stuck smh. Mind you I was 12-13 I broke the 3 button controller. Tragic . I was left only with 1 controller but it was the good one the 6 button. Blessings from Las Vegas .

On the 2nd level, if you stood in one of those two blocks above the exit flag, and press Down + Right, A + C, there's a direct warp to the final boss. Move combo could be wrong, it's been way too long ago and I may be wrong. But there's a definitely a warp to the final boss there.

I thought I made it far when I first played this, now I know I wasn't even close! The only flaw as far as I'm concerned are the bosses. I wish they had spent a little more time on at least the FINAL battle. Otherwise, love this classic.
