lol, it's actually really refreshing to hear a review of this game from someone who hasn't played any of the previous ones, even tho Mack's an old fart
Let him enjoy it ;) He doesn't need to know that Age of Empires 2 is vastly superior to this in pretty much every conceivable way.
@@ValosarX I bought Age of Empires 2 DE on release date for this game, and it's spectacular + nostalgic 👌
@@ValosarX ok boomer
jesus mate, you need to retro review Age of Empires 2 definitive edition, that's like tens of millions of people's childhoods right there.
The definitive edition is incredible at 4k
And the AI in AoE DE is just fucking sssick!
so is every game ever
I was an adult, but… yeah. I played this almost every day for years.
@@ML-eq4rx Nope, not really.
Also just because your dad never came back from getting milk doesn't mean you have to be an arsehole on the Internet you know ;)
As a French, I understand the feeling. It’s satisfying to invade England as France but imo the best feeling is to ally every single of its enemies to piss them off (Scotland in EU4... so good !)
I love the rivalry we English have with the French, until someone attacks our shared values then we are together as allies.
Its like a rivalry between competitive brothers!
It must feel satisfying as a Frenchman to invade England in this game - because they never succeeded in real history; the Normans were not French.
Ah guys come on now we all know that the real punching bag are the commies in China. I say that as a Nationalistic American. Those beg to receive punishment with just the look in their eye and as an proud American I'm quite itchy in the finger to grant their end.
@@broderickblack easy dude
@@broderickblack Literally noone was talking about USA, congrats on being the typical nationalist American though?
The AI in age of empires has different personalities. Like "defensive" "aggressive". Etc.
If you rolled the dice and got a game where all 3 AI are "extremely aggressive/expansionists" then you may get bum rushed like that.
I've had Intermediate A.I that throws Elephants and Seige weapons at walls and I've had Intermediate A.I that just sends archers. Very different A.I depending on the game.
I've not played a game yet where the AI isn't sending 2 units against me. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty as well
UA-cam says it's still processing the HD version of the video, been stuck on it for well over an hour, I have watched it and it does appear to be working fine but if it is not working for you give it a few more hours.
No problem.
Monetization also takes time for it works.
Did you play any mutiplayer :)
You REALLY have to play AoE II though, it's a classic for a reason and I think you'll love it if you like old school RTS's
lol, mak saying its a very RTSy game... well it is an RTS game, so you would expect that
I played the heck out of that game. Great memories and it’s still a great game.
its the same shit with worse graphics...like exactly the same
Yes
@@ML-eq4rx Oh trust me it is not. AoE2 doesn’t have homing arrows. You actually have to micro in it. I assure you it is not the same.
You should definitely do a retro review for Age of Empires 2. It is easily one of the best games ever made.
The history lessons that come with this game especially about the different types of weapons and equipment is so amazing. I love it. I’m praying they give us Age of Mythology 2
I've become so desensitized to all the bell ringing and horn honking that I wouldn't even have noticed it until Mack said "that was the horn"
The campaign was jaw dropping to see, to be honest. The amount of time they put into it was refreshing to see in an RTS. Well worth the money in my opinion
thats funny cause aoe4 has outright the weakest campaign the series alongside aoe1. aoe2 and aoe3 are leagues above it.
You really need to play AOE II sometime, it is amazing
Glad to hear you like this. I was obsessed with AoE2 but none of the others have been fun for me. So maybe I'll pick this up when it's on sale and hope it's good. Thanks!
Frankly I'm shocked Mack never played AoE 2. Absolute master piece. Ever considered going back to AoE 2: DE from 2019 and review it?
Bring a tear to my eye as a hardcore RTSer, a return to fucking form for RTS! I hope we get more like these.
I'm having a lot of fun in the Normandy campaign at the moment. Haven't played any more yet but I'm pleasantly surprised
I'm stuck on the mission "The siege of Wallingford" on hard mode, such a tough game on hard.
@@tomw6947 I'll keep an eye out for that one. I'm on intermediate myself
@@tomw6947 I ragequit this multiple times. When are you supposed to have time to make units!!! Then your reinforcements come and you say "Thats my army?!?" like 10 guys
@@engineerhealthyself Lmao I can't get past the final attack after you destroy the 4 outpost, little tip when you receive your reinforcements move towards your base and attack the first tower along with the army you have built and destroy the first tower, then retreat you your castle before you get attacked and continue to build your army. The problem is the longer you leave it the stronger the attacks get, also build another 2 castles (3 all together as you start with one) inside your base to help defend the walls, good luck soldier.
@@engineerhealthyself hahaha, noticed on Skirmishes and decent campaign missions you generally have to play defensively for a while with plenty of archers and garrisoned keeps, then slowly build up and squirrel away an offensive army in a safe corner somewhere until your ready to break out.
You might love the Stronghold series (Stronghold Crusader/Crusader Extreme). Keep up the good work, Mack!
legends is the only one worth playing nowadays
@@ML-eq4rx no
The only real bad one is Stronghold 3 because of the bugs and lack of content. Any other Stronghold is gameplay-wise really good.
Stay away from crusader extreme and rather play the original
finished playing most of them recently and the proper, worthy of your time order should be:
-stronghold
-stronghold crusader (hd prefferably to original but definietely NOT extreme unless for mp only)
-stronghold 2 if you would like better building sim part and rest of the game being worse than former titles
-maaaybe stronghold legends which is stronghold 2 but with less building sim and no normal faction leaders but instead 3 distinct (different buildings, units) factions: arthurian LEGENDS/human, snow/icy fantasy something idk, devil/mordor something idk
AoE2 definitive is worth a review
Ah nice, was hoping you'd look at this, loved aoe 1 and 2 so glad to see you enjoyed it. Will prob pick it up and like the idea of the history lessons
"40-45 years"!!! Absolutely love the Harry and Paul reference there!!
The AI is meant to be this way. Theres different strategies the the computer will randomly choose from at the start of a battle
So you have no control over it and no smooth learning curve at all? That is a great idea right there! /s
knew you'd love this old school title. Having a blast here too. Going back to the older games might be tough if you don't have that nostalgia but heres the obligatory reccomendation to play Age2 and Age of Mythology
AoE III was my childhood. Learnt a lot about the New world and the American railway. So glad to hear that this long awaited sequel is satisfying!
AoE 3 is the best of the series IMO, Havok physics was so satisfying. And the sound design was superb.
Love how mack casually mentions Guedelon Castle project.
Your English humor is the best of the best :D
I swear most of the time I just watch your reviews cuz you made me laugh so hard ;)
Think Ill check this out even though Im not usually very good at RTS games ,I like the idea of a documentary style campaign. Looking forward to your Forza Horizon 5 review!
Yeah and I bet am the only reviewer that can be arsed to test the biggest driving game of the year out on a wheel and pedal system as well as controller and give my opinion of the FFB. Honestly the system is broken, just full of lazy people.
@@WorthABuyreviews Read a review today, think it was Eurogamer or one of those. Long, in-depth review of the graphics, the cars, the graphics, the setting, the cars, the graphics, the audio, the graphics and the cars, and it got a 9. No mention of handling anywhere. At all.
Modern journalism.
It got done cooking this morning, playing it tonight!! Thanks for the review MACK!
Nice to see you did decided to actually review this Mack.
Siege of Wallingford was pretty tough on Intermediate but if you cheese that with double palisade walls it gives you breathing room to grow your army. I'm no AoE mega fan but this one feels really good to play.
I had forgotten this was coming out. Saw some people streaming the campaign and it looked great.
Skirmish (and MP) is where it's at and it seems comparable with the older ones, I hope we get more kingdoms soon and they don't make us pay too much for them.
For sure AoE2 is the best (imo), pending me playing this game. Do give it a go mate.
its on xbox gamepass if you have that, would save you a hefty chunk
Its not better than AoE2. Its actually noticeably worse.
@@Dlahusen1 its better. you are stuck in the past. nostalgia
@@Synchr0nix No, its objectively worse because it has less. At best its a graphically polished up version of AoE2. At worst is a derpy verision of AoE2 with bad AI, less factions, less tech. It took them over a decade to create this. Demand better.
@@Dlahusen1 Debatable
Retro RTS reviews mack?! AGE OF EMPIRES 1 ,2,3 DEFINITIVE EDITIONS also Age of mythology, I feel like you will love them
I miss Rabbit. Looking forward to his Christmas video!
AoE2 is still very much alive and competitive with casters and top players are insane lol. Pretty fun to watch too
Also this game looks great as well. Glad you enjoyed it!
I love watching competitive AoE2 games. From the looks of it it doesn’t look like AoE4 is hurting the AoE2 community at all either, which is awesome.
why nobody Talked about aoe3 though? is it bad?
@@JairCrawford same here and i agree. I recommend checking out T90. he's my favorite AoE2 caster
@@R3in_Ch 3 is like the odd one out. It was kinda mixed on the original release and the recent definitive edition didn't fix some issues and problems the community had with it in the first place.
Also 2 while not in 3d, is a gem and one of the most popular RTS games ever. It still has a lot of players and the strategy is very deep with a steep learning curve. You can do a lot of wild stuff. Actual matches are nothing like in the videos you see because people do all kinds of crazy things you'd have to see to believe
@@ninjaruss4205 I’ve been subscribed to T90 for years now haha. Small world.
Nice, age of Empires is back? Thanks for the Video. Loved the mac lore (45 years of gaming)
AOE 2 and 3 Mack, some great campaigns there, aoe 2 you got frederick barbarossa, saladin, atilla the hun, ghengis khan, and braveheart william wallace
Now confirmed as the definitive toy soldier review channel
I'm glad you didn't missed this one. It reminded me those old times with Aoe2 lan with friends with notebooks full of strategies ahaha.
No French were harmed because they surrendered before you showed up Mack.
"The 100 Year War. Probably another one coming over Fish. Something Great about invading France"
Dude you made me spit out my Brew :)
My favorite rts series returns. Glad you're finally experiencing this. I would also go check out the 9lder games as well.
I'll never forget playing Age of Empires 2 way back in 2002-03. A bunch of guys that lived on my floor in the dorms would play at least a few times every week. It was my first experience in multiplayer PC gaming, and it was a blast. We played a lot of Soldier of Fortune too, cant believe that franchise isn't around anymore.
Nice stream easter egg! I thought the history lessons really added to the enjoyment of the game; go figure...cut scenes that actually enrich the game!
I’ve just found myself dragging the video down on my phone so I can see more of the map!! Never done that on a UA-cam video but my Command & Conquer Red Alert head was clearly on for a second 😂 probably doesn’t help that I’ve had a few JDs tonight 🥃 well done Mack your videos are the highlight of my evening clear outs.
And I thought I've been the only one wanting you to review this game. Thank you for your reviews, they are the best ones.
France preemptively surrendered to Germany when I started my game
If you like this, you should absolutely get the Definite Edition of AoE I and II.
Joke's on you Mack for invading England with french viking William the Conqueror, lol!
Great video Mack. Always good to listen to the excitement of in your voice!
And yes we are going to tell you to try others. Like Age of Mythology The Titans which is probably my favourite of the series since it adds Hero Units to counter Mythological units ae Minotaur, Cyclops, Centaurs etc. Those being only on the greek side. Now add Norse, Egyptian, Atlantis and Chinese and you can try and figure out which famous myth units they will have. It's amazing \o/
i grew up on dune 2, also a bit of age of empires 2, warcraft 1 2 and 3, c&c... i really hope this years dune movie inspires a new proper dune real time strategy game! maybe more houses etc.!
@@paulocarreirapinto i didnt really like generals, i forgot to mention starcraft as well, i didnt enjoy those missions where you didnt have a base, but i really liked how different gameplay it was with every 3 races
but yea, rts genre died out i agree, roleplaying took over, and rts didnt have any good new ideas to offer
I played Age of Empires I, but never got the chance to play any of the sequels. It's good to know they're still faithful to the real historical setting
Love it how Mack is quite quick to mention his historical ‘knowledge’ of the early medieval period and the events of 1066, saying that they ‘led on’ to the Hundred Years War 300 years later, but then gets confused about playing during the Hundred Years War and encountering firearms which were widely introduced maybe 50 years after. He’s a great game reviewer but I’m glad he’s not a history teacher
You missed out. It was a wonder watching these cheeky little... twits in AOE1 & 2 wander around and do stuff like deforestation, get attacked by wild animals, or sneak off and try to stand around doing nothing until you notice and killed them like a crewel and vindictive god. Use to run this in the background at night as a sort of fish tank. Good stuff.
Of course no French were harmed
They ran away before anything could happen
Glad you liked it Mack! Been enjoying it loads myself
This made my day. So glad you finally played an AOE game Mack. Was watching your Grounded stream an was getting the impression you wouldn't be reviewing this. Not gonna lie i was getting really annoyed whenever someone asked if you would be doing it an youd fob it off with a nah iv got loads on, not played one before bla bla bla. lol. So as you can imagine was abit shocked to see this pop up today. Glad you enjoyed it an id recommend playing the older versions aswel, maybe a retro review in the future. Hope your well Mack keep up the hard work
So good to have a happy Mack
I'm glad you checked it out!
LOL ..the funniest was you saying there's probably another war coming..over fish :)))) that would be amazing to see....as always accurate and honest review
I would like to hear your thoughts on the previous remastered Age of Empire games.
As a fellow English man I can confirm the satisfaction one feels at crushing the French under heel is second to none. I think it's just ingrained in our genetics at this point.
Me: *INTERESTING* ...
*GERMAN NOISES*
Mac: *Reviews an RTS game*
Mac: It's very... "RTS-y"?
Mack while you're rediscovering the RTS games have you ever played Supreme Commander or it's follow up Forged Alliance? If not it's a must. It's got it's issues but when it comes to RTS it's second to none. Nothing since has come close to what you can do in that game.
talk about a broken and never fixed AI though. Always disappointed me, best played against a human opponent then yes it shines
Would be cool to hear your thoughts and comparisons with age of empires 2, since it is so very highly regarded.
I remember playing the first and second installment back in the day.
We have Definite Editions for both of them (better graphics, works smooth on modern systems...)
Great review. I literally don't buy anything until I see you review it.
Mack missed the AOE 123. Fantastic. Refreshing.
I used to do a lot of turtleling in the previous games...
Can't wait to do so again 🙂
Dawn of War and especially Company of Heroes will "balance out" your gameplay style because they discourage turtling ;-)
Mack you need to get on that second AOE game ASAP, all true gamers need to experience that rts masterpiece
There's little things missing and I'm not sure why like random nations instead of having to pick one, choosing your colour, replays, hotkeys, and a couple other things but those can all be added in the near future. I'm glad relic made an overall excellent sequel to a really good RTS series. Now let's hope somehow EA can do the same with command and conquer.
I can remember been in the British army in France doing a battlefield tour . Me my sergeant were in a taxi going back to our hotel after a night out in Caen and my sergeant said to the taxi driver I can speak a little French to the taxi driver and the French driver said go on then and my sergeant said ok then ... HE ! HOR! HE! HOR! HE! HOR! . haha us were crying with laughter haha .
Will now have to tell the wife our trip to Aruba next week is cancelled so I can play this... I am sure she will understand
"as an Englishman there's something so satisfying about invading France" I nearly choked on my mince pie, so so funny and your right! Never change Mack your awesome
Mack, I would LOVE to see you play and review AoE2!
begun the fish wars have...
Well Mack, you predicted correctly in the video about the comments which I will shamelessly add myself to. lol If you liked this, you will love AoE2. Retro review is highly recommended.
I can't go backward to this from Rome Total War.
"No French were harmed in the making of this video." Then you're doing it wrong lol
Mack, I don't comment often, but when I do... You HAVE to ay AOE2:de. Please. Do a retro review. Anything. Aoe 2 is THE legend... I started on Aoe 1,lovwd Aoe 2,hated Aoe 3 and this, from videos, looks like a shit. I was taken by a surprise by your video Mack! You have to play Aoe 2, please. Make yourself the pleasure! It is still getting updates and new campaigns. Do you believe that? After so many years, few months ago, many, many new campaigns, one from my little country of Czech Republic even! (Jan Žižka). Please Mack, please give Aoe 2 a try. It's a legend.
Never mind this I'm waiting for COD Vanguard review! The clown horn must surely be out for that!
This was an amazing review, Mack. Plus, your insults to the French were hilarious. And that little dig at cancel culture was bloody brilliant!!!!! Bravo, sir. BRAVO!!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂👏👏👏👏👏
Even though Mack said he wasn't probably doing it, we asked and we received.
Thanks Mack.
Now, only Rabbit is missing.
Rabbit is probably rotating over a spit back in the French camp. Hope Mack can mount a quick rescue!
The Mongols are coming, 2 Mongs don’t don’t make a right.
- Lacks genre basic UI.
- I would say, go for it and check campaigns for AoE2 and go back.
I was wondering if you were going to make this video and I'm glad you made it. I'm a fan of aoe games, specially AoE2, but in my opinion this one will refresh the franchise.
And one more thing; I don't want to tell you to play AoE2 if you're new in the granchise, play this, this aoe is some mix of the good stuff of all the previous aoe games, but of course it needs more time to fix some little things.
This game really deserves the support of youtubers like you. Thank you ;)
Wow, can't remember the last time we got an 8/10 from you! I'll pick it up today!
I'm in Canada and that GMG link just takes me to the main store page
40, 45 years.
With the AI, I think it changes up strategy each time. In, AOE there are strategies like rush, where the other player rushes out military units to raid which can be devastating if you are building your economy with no walls. Other times, the AI might be turtling instead, which is why they didn’t attack you in the beginning.
Wait a minute, with the way he described his past experience, he possibly also never played : CnC, Starcraft, Warcraft, total annihilation, homeworld and total war series.
"What are the French doing in England?", "Mind your own beeswax!" Age of Empires 1,2,3 have definitive editions on Steam, and I was surprised they had new dlc content for AOE2 in 2021
Surprised you didn't have any issues with key mapping etc
Never would have guessed that you never played one of these games before! Really happy you're enjoying 4, dude. Wish I could play but alas, I no longer have a P.C. Great review.
Positively Mack-ivellian review
What a surprise! I thought you would not review in the end. So glad to see you finally did it. It still kinda pales in comparison to AoE2, which is untouchable as an RTS, but 4 is still good. Thanks for doing the review!!
Damn you, Mack. I bought this because of you. (Love the content, as always)
"Quite enjoyed playing as the mongs" xD
Age of empires III and Age of Mythology were amazing, need to check the new one too, had no idea it came out.
My childhood was a bit of quake and doom, but the bulk of my gaming memories were with age of empires 1 & 2, starcraft, warcraft 2, red alert. So I was more of an rts-kid haha, great review!
100 years wasn't enough.
The whole series is quite good in their own ways, the original trilogy definitive edition all work great and all have their own little quirks to learn. AoE has always been a bit loose with the pathfinding and AI. That isn't ideal but they have always made up for it in excellent game design that overcomes it. AoE3 is probably the weakest entry, it's from that dark time in gaming when everything was kinda going to shit. It is still better than most RTS.
name better rts ?
@@yooanto9465 C&C
I think we're in another of those dark times
AoE2 is GOD tier.
