Ever wonder what our cabin in the woods would look like if it were a glass cabin?! Well you're in luck this week because that's what we did! We put a lot of holes in our cabin over the course of a few days. Sixteen feet of holes, to be precise (4.8m). That's a whole lot of holes! This was one of the first things we said we'd do when we walked into the cabin years ago and today it's finally happening. It's always nerve-wracking to make a large cosmetic and structural change to a building, because there are so many variables: what if you don't like it? What if it changes the temperature too drastically? Unlike the operating system, these windows don't have an undo button! If you have old windows in your house and are considering upgrading or replacing them, we can't recommend it enough because windows have come a long way in 16 years (about the last time ours were replaced). We also have a brand new folding door, which lets in so much fresh air, we can't stop staring through it and feeling the nice breeze. Somehow all these windows, fresh air and light makes even black-fly season less annoying 😊 It's amazing how a few windows in our cabin really makes us feel like we're looking through the back of our open van again. This was one of the best decisions we've ever made. Always trust your wife! 😉

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. waaaaaah 🥹 we get so emotional when we see the footage from DAY 1 at the cabin… hard to believe it was so roughy and smelly hahaha. These windows were the ONLY thing we were ever sure about and I’m so happy we never let that dream go. Almost 700 days later and the indoors is now the outdoors. Feels like an entirely different space!!!!! Thank you Pack for being here each week on this journey in the woods 💛

I am just blown away every time I see what you started with and what it is becoming after all the blood, sweat and tears you two have put into making this into your dream together. I cannot thank you enough for bringing all of us along, especially those of us who would be unable to physically achieve such a dream. W O W , You're right, that's the biggest TRANSFORMATION yet. You've changed your old dark cabin into a light filled luxury home. I actually shared your excitement in this one and enjoyed seeing your unstoppable smiles throughout. Up till this point, most of your work on the cabin has been what we call "sweat equity," but THIS transformation is a "major investment." You now own a GEM property!! Congratulations!
What I admire most about you is your work ethic, you don't just talk you do it. the doors and windows are not just beautiful, they are practical, you truly are an inspiration. Now we can watch the garden grow.
For the space between the windows, you could put a planter that has a trellis and plant either perennials such as clematis or an annual such as morning glories. Not sure which direction that faces but I’m sure that you can find something that would work in your climate zone. And then on either side of the edge of the patio, plant some other annuals into a planter box that matches the one in the center. And by the way, there are so many free patterns for making a planter box with an attached trellis, that with your skills and tools, you could have that whipped up in no time.
Yesss... honeysuckle, jasmine, any kind of crawling plant would look beautiful on a trellis between the windows!

I could not hold back my 77 year old waterworks as I realized the emotional magnificence of your Cabin journey that you have allowed us to watch. I think a trellis with a "raised bed" on the bottom would be perfect for the space in between the doors. You can grow a vine plant in the bottom, and they will grow up the trellis. That way if you ever wanted to move the trellis you can because it isn't attached to the side of the house!!

We often here someone describe a place as hell on earth, but I can say honestly you two are creating a piece of heaven on earth. You've said it's been your dream, then I pray you never wake from it, because it's prefect. Your cabin videos are the highlight of my week, not because of the construction. I work construction every day. It's because you two are building a home. Anyone can build/rebuild a cabin, so few can build a real home. Thank you for bringing us along.

I really like the idea of a water feature - a trough below with a concealed circulating pump, a beautiful spout above, perhaps in bamboo, Japanese inspired. When the two of you are sitting out on the the deck in the evening the sound of trickling water would be just blissful ⛲

I love this show. It has inspired me to be fearless in tackling the technical issues in my field (I.T.). I have to read lots of stuff, but when I get tired or distracted, recently I say "Jazz and Crystal" and I am reminded about how putting in honest effort makes all the difference.
The windows really do it for the cabin. Like you both said, it makes it so bright and airy and cheery. For the summer you can have plenty of air and keep the bugs out with the screens. Come fall and winter, fire up the stove and enjoy the beauty oof the woods you will have for a view. The cabin needed both of you amazing ladies dreams and inspiration to take it from run down to a beautiful castle in the woods. Kudos to all the many different contractors who you have had along in the adventure{transformation} who have helped with your vision to bring it to life, and let's not forget the one and only Porter.
Girls. Oh my. Watching you drive up to your place for the first time, I couldn’t see it. Looked way too daunting to me. I have been amazed at you two and your unbridled enthusiasm, determination and joy in doing the work, step by step. The way you transformed the outside that first year was a revelation.
With the addition of these gorgeous windows and doors I can now breathe in the connection between the cozy cabin and Mother Natures beauty. They are one.

🤯 WOW, I'm in love 👏❤️, just think how beautiful it will be to sit in front of the fireplace, watching the snow fall, you won't feel so trapped during the winter anymore. I think a trellis with a vine that will come back in the spring would look amazing in between the two porch doors.🍻

thats what I saw too! a climbing flower and a climbing berry together. Fragrance, pollenation, walking outside with your coffee and grabbing a berry as u walk by, sitting down and enjoying its beauty. The black trellis would be a perfect accent piece even if the flowers and berries are out of season.

Between the windows, put a bench with an array of terracotta flower pots on the wall.
I am amazed with the windows/doors/not a window (or a door) you have installed! So much cross breeze, light, and views! You have to be so proud of what you have done. My Dad built three of our houses after work. I always wanted to help but he grew up where men’s and women’s job were quite different. Women didn’t do this kind of stuff! I wish i had pushed him more to let me do men stuff! I think he would have loved to watch what you have done! It’s all stunning!

OMG, the windows make an incredible difference. Why be in nature if you can't see it. I love the bifolding doors. Natural light always puts be in the best mood. Outstanding with the deck. This La Casa is turning out to be a show stopper! Well done, again!
You have really transformed your little "love shack" into something beautiful! Chrystal, I know you are visualizing flowers on the table and all around on the deck. So, a trip to the local garden center is on your list for sure! LOL.
Between the doors, I would nail up a trellis and grow a clematis on it. I guess they grow where you live. If you want the tree it needs to be one that is taller than what you already have. The tree would look pretty with little white lights on it while dining outside! I'm sure whatever you decide, it will look great, because everything you two touch looks great!
For the screens, I would recommend some kind of a pattern going from the floor to about head high for the dogs in a colors that compliments your theme and color scheme, and then stenciled and lightly misted with spray paint (and done in many layers until the opacity you want is achieved), so as not to plug the screen itself. In my experience, Dogs will eventually run through screens, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually they will run through those screen like they aren't even there. A small pattern would give their eyes something to focus on, reminding them that there is something there. Just an idea anyway. My screens didn't roll in but after replacing four screens, a small checkerboard pattern up to knee high was all it took to keep my Dog from blasting through the screen like a high school football player through a tissue paper spirit banner.
Oh you made us laugh! But so true. Bella also has ran thru at least 8 screens at my moms and we became pro’s at replacing the screen. 😂🐶

I'm an English expatriate living in a forest community within walking distance of a lake in Germany & I absolutely love it. By comparison, suburbia is just more urban sprawl. When I go walking with my dog, we see various forms of wildlife from beavers to deer & occasionally wild boar running free, but I really envey you vanwives truly living off grid by yourselves in a massive forest with no one else around. Wishing you & your lovely dogs all the best.
I love the new windows and all the light that will come streaming in!!! Looks like they have a bit of UV Protection in the tint of the glass! The tri-fold window in the kitchen is the BOMB!!!! Will you put a screen on it? If you put a retractable screen that slides from the top down you could only open it a little and still be able to pass things through! Less Black flies entering that way! 🤣 This is just so fantastic and I love watching you both create this magical space. Thank you for taking all of us along with you on your journey!

OMG, The windows and doors are Amazing! What an incredible transformation on your cabin, SO GOOD!! Everything is so much brighter and open, I absolutely love it ladies! Use the space wisely... And since you are not afraid to create on the grill and pizza oven.... For yourselves and all of us coming to visit... A Secure Cabinet to store everything you'll need outside to compliment your Chef creative abilities! And your guest's Chef creative abilities when they want to help too! And maybe an automatic Bear Spray setup for when they are wondering if all that glass is going to keep them from their next meal(s). Vanwives can be very tasty according to all the ones I asked!!!! LOL In fact.... They all said YUM! Seriously, research what they do to parked vans and cars that have food stored inside. You just added so much light in the cabin AND made their ability to get in easier. Ask the locals if it's ever been a problem. If so, find a way to discourage that decision! And the only thing I can add now is.... HOT TUB! Kibbles and Bits!
Oh Yeah... Please somehow find a way to plant a Hass Avocado tree in the dome? You will then have arrived in HEAVEN! No more wondering if you'll be there! LOL

You girls are great! Between the two windows/doors how about a self contained water feature. You can build one off the deck or hang off the wall. You will have to run an outside electrical hookup to run a small water pump. It is very soothing to listen to water falling at night while laying in bed or sitting on the deck. I built a two foot wide three foot high free standing fountain out of a old rum barrel an old fashioned hand water pump. Since it is self contained there aren't any water lines outside the pump or barrel. It looks great and the water pouring out of the pump sounds great when it hits the inside of the barrel. You will have to fill the barrel with a hose once a week. Have Fun!
Awesome job girls. For the space between the windows I would caution against cedar…they attract bugs. I know I immediately saw a water feature/fountain with a basin giving a calming sound on those quiet evenings and a beautiful feature 😊 I’m sure no matter what you choose it will be beautiful!
Yes, cedars look lovely but they attract mosquitos...

I am so intrigued how much you have invested into this property with all of the structures, renovating, landscaping and vehicles..etc. just to have an understanding of what it costs after two years of living off grid. A sexy 4' planter planted with double roses in red and Inter planted with white clematis. Underneath place perennials in varying heights and surrounded by flowers that will drape down the sides of planter. This will draw the eye upward. Make sure it is a large, full statement piece! Good luck!
