It wasn't a dream, it was real life. His real totem was his wedding ring: if he's wearing it, he's in real life. If he's not, it's a dream. He wears his ring in the final scene.
Also, the top wasn't even his totem in the first place: it was his wife's.

The top falls over, its reality. Even though Nolan had been coy if its a dream at the end kr not. Michael Cain said in an interview that Nolan had told him that every scene he was in was reality. Since Michael Cain is in the scene we can assume its reality.

Meaning the kids have architect skills and they are in a dream. In movies like this you never add something that doesn't have meaning, especially when it's the final dialogue you hear.

@MrJobofo Agree, we look at the KOQ every day when we have dinner here we live in Oslo. It has been going on for many years. Of course pauses from time to time but then there is again. The series is very good because we never get bored despite knowing the episodes. We have of course bought the series but it also runs regularly on TV. Too bad there were no more episodes made. Miss Arthur, but those are good memories. I think Doug's grimaces and manner of expression are what make us never get bored. For example, when he mimics Carrie talking. I'm 58 years old now and my two sons think it's as funny as what I and my wife think it is.

sound guys are EXACTLY like this on any given film set large and small. catty ("I'm so confused I guess I'll have to see it in the theatre") lol/feeling like they're under-appreciated (and they generally are - especially when they watch 9 hours to set up the lighting for the scene and by take 3 are told "they're in the way")/etc and he captures it so well in this character. His character knows what we all know though, bad production sound can and WILL ruin a promising picture. Show some love to your sound guys, young filmmakers, especially if they know their stuff and have a passion for it.
