I've seen Dylan a couple dozen times now and: This was the best Dylan show I ever saw--I was "stage left" behind the soundboard. Got a "peace sign" from Ringo in the balcony! Shared a "short guy moment" with Danny DeVito on the way out. I was miserable in grad school at Long beach at the time. There's very little doubt that these shows were a lifesaver for me!
Peak Dylan, definitely. His best band every (Kemper, Garnier, Campbell) and totally on their game. All five shows. Big thanks for this. Excellent job of taping. We made cassettes all five nights and there were at least a half dozen other tapers in our vicinity.
Will Someone Please Help Me Find The Willie Nelson Set PLEASE 🙏🏽 I Have an incredible Story About How I Got Into Those Shows And That Willie Played Angel Flying To Close To The Ground for Me 🥰🙏🏽❣️
God bless you for recording this! Memories flooding in. I was 21 and home for winter break…a broke college kid. I was so bummed I couldn’t get a ticket beforehand so I drove up to LA just in hopes I could buy from a scalper. I got to the El Rey like 3 hours early, just lingering and pacing around the sidewalk, but couldn’t find anything. Finally 20 minutes before doors opened a guy sold me a ticket for $75 or $100 (a lot of money for me back then). I beelined straight to the front stage right and it was a mystical experience. So much power and energy in Bob’s performance and so on point vocally. I can still smell the incense. Thank you for taking us back 🙏🏼
I know it's not your fault start to continue but had to stop listening to this great show because there were so many mid song adverts. 4 within joey! You tube is spoiling great channels like yours by enforcing their own advertising. It's terrible.
Woah this was an “I was there” find by accident. I remember during Tangled up in Blue the whole band was on, a Dylan just smiled, and the whole crowd went off. Just a smile set it off. One of the top shows of his, or anyone, I’ve seen.

I saw his 95 show at the Hollywood palladium which was also great, but much more loose. He started, and as I recall, standing front with his 95- era purple or yellow open neck shirts. He mostly sang out front like a Vegas crooner with a rock and roll bar band. But then he an auction section with Bucky Backer. All of it, was a great Bob show in a great year. 1997 though, had a new thing entirely- new album, mostly new band, new song and new show. Was just very tight where you could tell what he was wanting to put out and what people were into was this band (which in 1997-2001 was a great band) playing these new songs and how the sounded.

What I remember about that is he didn’t play an instrument he just sang I recall. When I look at videos it’s cool now. But I remember thinking it looked like a Vegas lounge singer he was going for. Idk- but those 2, I may be 50 shows I’ve seen all the best.
This is from night one on December 19th 1997 at the El Rey theater in Los Angeles California. I found it on Setlist FM. I saw him that same year on August 31st.
One of the funnies things I remember from this show... during Sheryl Crow's set, some guy in the audience yells out at the top of his lungs "MOZAMBIQUE!!!!"
Always wondered if "long black coat" was about Johnny...never confirmed but BOB bein BOB, prolly never get a straight answer anyway....BTW...... YOUR KILLING IT WITH THESE POSTS.. B nice to hear him at The MANN MUSIC CENTER in Philly...Ani difranco opened..95 i believe...a certain 19y.o. wild fan jumped on stage n kissed his foot...LOL....My MOM (who i took that night and turned me on to Bob as a child) said id never get up there...."I dare you"....

Sheryl played Mississippi around that time but that didn't appear on an album until love and theft despite him playing it in session earlier than the el rey gigs (see tell tale signs). Mississippi was on Sheryl 1998 album I think. I would subscribe but there are way too many adverts going on here I'm afraid.

didn't know Ringo was there, but Joni Mitchell was, one night. These shows were amazing. El Rey capacity 900. do the math.
