Great history lesson surrounding the Skyway, thanks Matt. I loved this ride and was sad it had to go. I never knew why it closed (officially/unofficially) but now I do. The more I know!
What ended the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyway_%28Disney%29 was not only 40 years of wear, tear and stress but the fact that each gondola was designed for a maximum weight of 500 lbs. Back in the 50's and 60's, that was good for a family of four. Since the 80's, however, the 500 lb. limit could be 3, 2 or even 1 person. You get a 350 and 250 lb. couple and they can't ride together... Or if they do, it's overloaded [insert sound of cable snapping and screams here].
In case I have studied online, the Skyway ride is now available at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, WA, Oakland Zoo in Oakland, CA, San Diego Zoo / Sea World in San Diego, CA, Great America In Santa Clara, CA, Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta, GA & Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ. Coming soon, the New Skyway Ride will be at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.
Thank you! Brought tears to my eyes. We loved the skyway. It was the best way to take our tired kids across the park from Fantasyland to Tomorrowland and right on to the Monorail. Then we would get off the monorail at the Disneyland Hotel and up to bed. Very efficient as well as fun.
You know how some rides, like Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, have one of the ride vehicles outside the ride for guest to take pictures in? If Disney still has any Skyway buckets in storage they should put one out in the park as a photo op. Maybe even include a plaque detailing the history of the Skyway next to it.
I really love this video. I love the commercials in between, I remember seeing them as a kid. This is nostalgia central. I would love to see a video on all the stuff disney did in the 80's and I think early 90's where they did the state fair, circus day and blast to the past. Those were pretty neat. I also remember they gave away cars, watches, plush toys and other cool things to guests for the 30th anniversary.
thank you so much! finding good commercials to use is one of the hardest parts of making these. and I'll defiantly look into those things for a future video!
Great video friend, as always I love your intros and outros! But I'm confused about what you said at 3:46 the Matterhorn is 147 feet tall, not 80. Did you mean that the ride track is 80 feet high?
I love the retro style and the old classic commercials, this is actually bringing back good old memories from when I was a kid, like the extraterrorestrial alien encounter
I miss the skyway its was rad! I used to get scared as a kid when we went through the matterhorn. Yeah some buckets still remain a few weeks ago they had a bucket setup to take pics in btw. And the old school bumpers (intros) are awesome!
wow - I remember that Christmas with roger rabbit! :) I first rode the skyway in 1979 and it was so cool how it went through the matterhorn - I think walt loved how he could melt rides together - even now I love how the train goes through splash mountain. I was so bummed that I couldn't take my daughter on the skyway when we went in 1996 - but at least we still had the bear jamboree! :) my daughter did like indiana jones as it was relatively new. Doesn't seem fair that dw gets it!
Von Roll! So many parks had those things back in the day, and nearly all of them are gone... I guess Busch Gardens is still running theirs, at least in Williamsburg.
I wish Disney would commission better music. Today's parade music is just as cringe-worthy as the music for those ads. I remember as a 3rd grader when the Matterhorn insides were bare and you watch all the tracks and and cars zooming around.---as in Space Mountain.
I have to say, I really love the retro style of your intros and outros! They're iconic in their own way and is now indicative of your videos! :D
Thanks so much!! I worked super hard on them and it means a lot :-)
Great job
Love this
I'm really enjoying your videos. I like the intro as well.
I miss the Skyway. also the people mover and adventure thru innerspace rides all 3 was great to relax and enjoy the rides.
I wished you still did these!!:(
I love ur videos I listen to these every February!! Please make more!!
Back again I moved to Florida and a pass holder I’m going to Disney World 1-8-24
I’m going to DisneyLand in 2 weeks 7-19-22
There is a basketball hoop somewhere up there too! Great video.....I miss the Peoplemover&The Skyway
There was an old Mine train before Thunder mountain and the mule rides were in same area

Oh I really miss the Sky way

I think a good idea would to have a sort of crashes Skyway gondola on the Matterhorn somewhere, or even inside the ride.

I’m so happy they’re building a skyway at WDW now
Is that David Faustino (Calvin from "The Gummi Bears") in the late '70s-early '80s commercial?
Hey man, great stuff thanks for making these.
You're very welcome! :-)

Darn it!! I swear when I checked it said 80, but looking now it says 147!!
😊yo it is me again I have no pass this year but will get another when I turn 40
New subscriber ! LOVE the commercials ! Keep up the great work....
Thank you so much!!!
Loving the series. Keep up the great work.

I remember the skyway at disneyland resort in Anaheim California 😊😊😊😊I miss it so much
Great video dude, really enjoyed this!!! Did Disney ever keep any of the buckets? like they kept and restored some of the people mover ones?

Another great video about a missed past attraction. I love the old people mover soundtrack!
I remember when I was older, teenager my friends and I used the Skyway more as a means of transportation,

Awesome man!
Keep it up.
LOVED the SkyWay! Watching the Main Street Electrical Parade from up above Fantasyland was awesome!
The late 90ties? It closed in 1994. WHOOPS!
what
No mention of the Skyway manufacture. Redo..
Von Roll! So many parks had those things back in the day, and nearly all of them are gone... I guess Busch Gardens is still running theirs, at least in Williamsburg.
Sea World San Diego and the San Diego Zoo each still run Von Roll Skyways but there aren’t many left.
There is also a Skyway left at the Minnesota State Fair! With both enclosed buckets and the much superior one where your feet dangle.
yeeeeees
