I ordered this model from Amazon just a few days ago (8GB RAM, i5 processor) for $649, but it hasn't arrived yet. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Coming from a 2009 Dell Studio with Windows Vista, I should think it will be a decent upgrade. I'm planning to swap the HDD for a SSD soon. Any suggestions on where to watch a video on how to do that? My google searches have come up dry.

GadgetJM I ordered one on Amazon. a few hours after I used it, the Home button stopped working, and the screen was not auto rotating in tab mode. i returned and got a 2nd replacement laptop. Which had a spot on the LCD which was lighter in colour than the rest of the screen. I returned it and now have a 3rd Laptop. it has been kind of slow and I also get random clicks on the screen every now and then. I ran the Dell SupportAssist tool and its saying the laptops got a faulty hard drive. So far 3/3 laptops are faulty. Dell is replacing my hard drive now. But please let me know if you have heard of issues like this with the laptop. or am I just really unlucky with this laptop? Its made me think that this line has poor quality assurance.
is this is 7347 with i5 processor? would there be significant difference if I got the one with the i3 processor? I'm sort of a heavy user. Not a gamer. But I multitask. For long periods of time.
I just bought this laptop. I went to the Mobility Center and still could not turn the backlit keyboard on. Is there a hot key for that?
I thinking of the bradwell version of this but is it the same screen panel?

I would at least try for an i5 with 8gb of RAM for Programming and Photoshop related work. I work at an electronic store, and you technically CAN get it done with i3 and 4gb, but it may overheat or have major slow downs / crash. Hope I helped!

Hello! nice review :) i just bought this device and find it awesome ! as you said, the HDD is replacable and i did it. Now the laptop is faster with his 512GB SSD crucial MX100. The battery life is 4-5h but it depends on what you do.

you can replace the battery once the existing one dies, but even so, it's too small. 4-5 hours is just not enough for me. How's your trackpad? Does it get jumpy? Mine does

4321Will1234 FIRST METHOD :
first I've downloaded an ISO of windows 8.1 and made a bootable usb with it. THEN switch off "fast boot" on the actual windows 8.1 because i wanted to access the BIOS. Then replace the HDD with SSD, then boot on the USB stick and install windows 8. Be sure to have the KEY of windows when you install it on the SSD.
One more thing : The SSD i bought had a GPT partition so you have to boot the bios on legacy mode and not UEFI (you change that on the bios).
SECONDE METHOD (EASIER) :
use the program given by the seller to copy entirely you HDD on the SSD, then replace and it just works fine :-)

I have a mac but am looking for a new laptop for engineering. My biggest fear is that the computer will get a virus though and i'll just blow all my cash. How prone is this computer to viruses?

Thanks for the review. My understanding is that Dell shipped an unfinished and flawed product.
Bought one of these and out of the box it has a "ghost clicking" issue on the touch screen (random taps happen when no one is touching it---closing windows, doing all kinds of things on its own). Could have returned it to the store but called Dell and they said they'd replace the screen. By the time it came back with the new screen, the return period at the store had passed...and right out of the box when we got the replaced screen it was the SAME thing again, random ghost taps all over (centered on a slightly different spot). Dell is trying to say this is software...HUH? Moving the screen a little bit will either stop, start, or change the random tapping. Besides, the ONLY software installed on this from day one was the Dell-installed software. Saying it is software is an insult to the intelligence of Dell's customers. This machine is a LEMON---I wish I had known because now I am stuck with it because it's too late to return it to the store (it was two weeks from when we contacted Dell to getting it back from them). Don't make the mistakes I did (buying it was the first mistake) and if you have trouble like this return the unit to the store while you still can...and buy something else!
Im glad to know Im not the only person who had this problem. It was unbearable. I gathered whatever patience I had, saved up some cash, and got a HP Pavilion (I was 18 at the time and Im not a geek or a tech guy) - I am currently typing this comment from that HP xD Since then avoided Dell like a plague.

Dell xps 12. Beacuse i have great super bright and sharp display,excellent carbon fiber and aluminium build. And the keyboard is best on laptops!

Because it's not a gaming laptop, build your own. It could probably play at lowest possible settings at 30 fps.
I bought this laptop really love it but my laptop edges got orangish I tried to clean it but never goes off :(

+Chronic Its been 7 months so far. Just can't find a way to clean it up. Its getting dark silver from orangish and if u try to clean it up with pressure the color goes off.

Battery Life?
Mine runs upto 4-5 hours in normal use(movies,downloading,youtube vedio,software installation etc) Not great compare to yoga,macbook,xps. But in my opinion it`s okay.
You think I will be able to play far cry 4 and watch dogs on ultra resolution?
This doesn't have a high end graphics card. Best you could do with those games is low to medium settings at most with decent fps.

The unfortunate reality of touchscreens, indeed. And putting a matte screen protector ruins the sharpness. :(
