I'm planning on running W:DH with all the villains involved in some way, primarily with the Keys to the vault: Xanathars fish, the Cassalanters infernal contract, Jarlaxles hat feather, and Manshoons spellbook (or golden arm).

That's a decent idea, I think that should make the game more rewarding.

I’m planning on taking some of the quests from Ghosts of Saltmarsh and having them as side quests in Waterdeep. Spoiler buffer for those 😱😱
The first one has a haunted house that the players are sent to investigate which turns out to be a smugglers hideout and I feel like you could make the smugglers members of the Zhents or Xanathar goons. That could easily be a quest given by a faction or maybe the party just overhears people talking about a haunted house. Then from there if you find enough info in the house you can figure out how they communicate with their ship using a light so the players could wait for it to come back, raid it, and then boom they got a boat now. There’s another for like 4th level where you’re sent to investigate this ghost ship off the coast that’s got some secret lore and a cannibal druid guy with a ton of spiders, and the party could use their new boat for that.

Oh Lord. My group just finished CoS, and they started it with the Death House introductory adventure, so if they hear about another haunted house, they’re going to refuse to go in. 😂

My party decided that the necromancer from the emerald enclave quest, was a BIG issue and now are on a city wide look out for him. Now I have to properly add one in

I mean a party can suddenly fixate on the strangest of things that seem totally menial to the DM, it happens.

Hi, thanks for this video, very cool ideas. One thing I'm struggling with is that my players want to go at seemingly different speeds, with one struggling to pay attention while others fuck about. I like to run a fuckabouty game, but am conscious of this players bordom. Should I make sure to pay them a little more attention while the others are mucking about? It also comes from the characters they play, being dodgy rogues while he's a misguided good cleric.

Sorry for butting in, but is the problem that it's a little too open sandbox and that the cleric wants better direction? Or is it that there is greater direction and the other players just want to learn the name and backstory of every guard and shopkeeper they meet, and the cleric is like GUYS. CAN WE STAY ON TRACK?

@@brycebolick6518 first of all, thanks for the butt in :). Second, its a bit of both, like, the two players are confined wannabe murder hobos who tried to threaten Reynair and threw a lot of my stuff off track, but they're playing characters, and I really want to yes and them, plus, I can be a little directionless when I want to let them explore. The cleric minds the lack of track, just like you say. I figure I could make him the protaganist as he's the only good aligned one of the bunch of them.

Sadly, I haven't had the honor of having a murder hobo while I've been running the game, so I'm not sure how much help I can be.
Also, lately I have been running 1.5 hour games because that's what my group can commit to (kids and stuff). So because of that when things go off the rails or I can tell a player isn't having a lot of fun with the decision the rest of the group made, I have a good chunk of time to think about how to best roll with the punches while still balancing player interests/spotlight. All of that is to say that I think I've got a weird set of circumstances that allow me to do this.
I have sent character's divine dreams before to help players get on board with other player's interests (helped the paladin decide it was important to go get answers from someone they were talking about getting involved with). I've also really combine story threads to help unify the direction people want to go in (made Volo a closet theif, and the campaign's villain kidnapped one of the character's mentor). I've also given annoying, but kind of fun consequences for their actions (one of the characters really ticked off the poltergiest bar tender and now has his stuff thrown out the window while he sleeps once a week or so). Not sure if any of that helps? Happy to listen to more specific things that you're thinking about in this thread.
PS - OH. And out of game, I had to ask one player to adjust their play style just a little bit to help another feel better. THAT has been working great, and both players have been having a blast ever since.
