Tenet had the best sound of any movie this year, dialog aside. An intense, nervy score that holds the tension from beginning to end. The base during the chopper scenes at the end was insane!
No. Had to turn subtitles on a quarter of the way through the movie and I just left them on. And even the bass was just over boosted, unbalanced mid bass.

The sound is spectacularly bad. It has one of the worst mixes I've heard in a very long, long time. Blaring music and muffled dialogue do not spectacular sound make. Nolan needs to get his head out of his ass regarding sound already and update to at least 7.1. 5.1 was good in 1999, but not anymore.

Excellent list. Based on what I got I would say 1917, Jojo Rabbit, Star Wars ROS, and Midway. For older movies that got 4k releases in 2020 I would say Requiem for a dream, Beetlejuice, Full Metal Jacket and 22 and I suppose 21 jump street
Shane can you tell us more about the 2k DI Vs 4K DI? Do we really need to pay attention to sites like real or fake 4K to get an indicator of video quality ?
I don't pay that much attention to those kind of sites anymore. Though a 2K DI does limit the pixel count, it doesn't prevent the use of HDR on the 4K transfer; IMO HDR is more important than the additional pixels. Besides, professional upscalers are usually higher quality than in consumer devices; redoing 2K CGI in 4K (as Peter Jackson did with much of the LOTR trilogy) is even better.
I already have Joker and 1917 in my collection in Steelbook, and I totally agree with their listing here! Only issue I have with 1917 is the fairly aggressive judder on my LG C9 OLED.
My ear for sound is probably different from yours Shane. Maybe for picture quality as well. 1. The Invisible Man 2. Ford v Ferrari 3. The Hobbit trilogy 4. 300 5. 1917 6. Birds of Prey 7. Bloodshot 8. Joker 9. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 10. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
@Jay tech addict Homekit Joker has more of a natural look than BOP. I like the use of color in "Birds of Prey" over "Joker". Plus BOP has better sound separation than Joker. Joker probably does best BOP in the sharpness category.

I hadn’t realized how much film grain was in Rise of Skywalker until I turned it on recently. Great list, I want to check some of these out now that I’ve got an Atmos setup in my basement.
Shane...I know you said it have to be an atmos sound but Tenet should have been in the top three because even having a 5.1 it is so much superior to the call of the wild atmos which we have to turn up.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy really is exceptional. The picture is surprisingly crisp for an older title. Looks like it was filmed last year. And the atmos sound is very well done too.

Catalog title. Besides there's some controversy as to the tweaks Peter Jackson made to the films, mainly by those who took his "I wanted to make LOTR look just like The Hobbit" comments a bit too literally (LOTR still isn't 3D @ 48 fps). He still did a great job updating LOTR's early-2000's 2K CGI for 4K; it could have been much, much worse.

Excluding releases that are 4k UHD but don't have an Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack seems to be an odd choice. Films made before the 80s are sometimes released with only the original 2.0 lossless audio and don't include an Atmos remix. This is not a mark against the release. A movie shot in 1950 is generally not going to benefit from a remix that includes height channels or even a surround sound mix.
I think he excluded catalog titles in general, so not having Atmos or DTS:X on some of those isn't an issue. The biggest impact his exclusion had was on Tenet, because Christopher Nolan still prefers traditional 5.1 mixes.

Ford vs Ferrari sounded unreal, I keep coming back to it !
The worst DOLBY ATMOS mix has F vs F (saw in DOLBY CINEMA) not a single overhead effect in the whole movie so a waste of 3D immersive audio

In my opinion Dark Fate had the best audio mix of the year. Couch shaking bass and active atmos from the very first second all the way to the end.
What about jaws? It was amazing, brought the early 70s back to life.

Yes but those artists are only available for streaming on Amazon Prime in 4k Ultra not on any physical 4K Ultra discs as far as I can tell.
