Well, since other people are sharing their stories... I'm a completionest when it comes to great games and I go to unreasonable lengths to make it happen. Lagoon was my best friend's game and I used to borrow it from time to time, and I wanted to return it to him in a flawless state. I obtained all the weapons, shields, armour and spells and even that shiny ball that you had to go back to the beginning of the game and pay 10,000 gold to achieve. I then earned another 10,000 gold on the account for perfection sake... We were about to return the game and my mom said we had an additional 5 minutes to wait, so I decided... 'What the heck, let's listen to that amazing opening theme again!' So I put the game in and cranked the volume... 2 minutes after, the game froze during the opening and I had to turn it off. I checked the game to make sure it was ok, since it had never froze before, and when I tried to load the save file, I noticed it had been completely erased... Sad sad day...
I think it was Lagoon. None of my other SNES games ever erased on me except for this one, which if I recall happened twice to me. The funny thing was the second time, I turned it off and when I reloaded, the save file returned. I know Lagoon was one of the earlier SNES games so I wonder if that had anything to do with it.
Oddly enough, I'd say my favorite song from this game is "Town of Decease." I know most others would say "Valley" or "Moonchild," but there's just something about that song's atmosphere that really brings the nostalgia vibes. It's the one I constantly come back for.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who played jumping sword music. It was one of my favorite ways to pass the time while wandering around dungeons with no map. :P
I narrowly missed this game; I picked it up as a last pick item in my shopping spree at toys r us one xmas as a kid. I had wanted final fantasy 3/6 the most, and had zero expectations for lagoon to be the one I beat first :) I would listen to the opening theme over and over sometimes taking idk 20 mins or so to start the actual game. There were places I'd stop playing and listen to the music; it's cool knowing now how limited musicians were then but still managed to capture themes and evoke the emotion out of me in response. I am grateful I can listen to these snes sound tracks and remember with ears that recalled the newness and epic awesomeness it was to a kid in the early to mid 90s that already loved fantasy and then found the music to that life in videogames like Lagoon.
It just dawned on me that Drakkhen is made by the same company and it also had that "funky medieval" feel (but it was a lousy game). I recognize all the same sound fonts.
@@RetroWill Every major developer had a very distinct music sound. Capcom's music is incredibly recognizable (it always seems to sound like it was pulled straight from an anime). Even the legendary Super Metroid soundtrack had enough timbral commonalities with Super Mario and Zelda to be a distraction. Of course, it all sounds like childhood to me now.
I remember renting this game way back in 1992, the Atland theme is what stuck with me all these years along with the dungeon theme. Couldn't beat it on my first rental haha...took me another try to beat it.
@@Hockexx Blows Donkey Kong out of the water. When everyone in 1994 was losing their minds over the DKC soundtrack, I was like, “Yeah, this is good, but you can just admit you weren’t playing video games three years ago.”
I was not very good at this game as a wee girl, but I did enjoy the music more than anything. I had a habit of leaving my SNES on simply to listen to my favorite songs.
I have a weird true story about this game. I bought it when it was new at a store in a mall, and as I was getting in the car, I opened the box, only to find that the game inside the box was Super Mario World (at least the sticker on the cartridge was?). I was scared that the mall store wouldn't believe me, but we went right back in and they exchanged it for a proper copy without any argument. I played this game all the way through dozens of times, probably, in the years after that.
Happens. How I actually played Breath Of Fire for the first time and my first RPG as well, was one day at the rental store I rented Final Fantasy III. Well so happens even though it had a FFIII sticker, box, and manual, it was freaking Breath of Fire! Imagine my surprise.
I love this game so much, mechanics flaws and all! When I was a child, this was by far one of the more complex rpgs that I played and to this day has one of my favorite soundtracks. The storyline was pretty good too, as I remember, and pretty dark for that era of gaming. I will have to replay one of these days!
My brother rented Lagoon from Blockbuster when we were little and I loved the music so much that I got it for my 6th birthday! I didn't care that the sword was so short and difficult to use. I still have that cartridge in my collection. When I found out about the original X68000 version when I was a teenager, I played that version and was surprised by the Ys-style bump combat and every other difference. Whenever I play Lagoon now, it's always the X68000 version, especially after the English fan translation came out.
I played the x68k version years before the translation, I got by just knowing what to select. I did play the English patch when it came out, that was a dream come true.
@@Red88Rex So did I! I thought the chances of getting an English translation for the original were very slim. It was a dream come true for me, as well.
Is that why the sword swing is so absurdly short, because it had Ys style combat in the X68000 version? For as much I've enjoyed the game that was always my biggest gripe with the game.

I recall my brother got this game and when he completed it I started a new game and also completed it. there is only one save slot. this, and Drakkhen and other obscure titles had some of the best music in a video game in that time, 1991, I recall.
Yeah, the original Lagoon on Sharp x68000 was 1990 then this port was 91, sounds right. If you're interested in that, I've got a playlist on my channel dedicated to this game and it's many iterations.

If you want to see the original version on the Sharp x68000, you actually hold the sword out and ram things like Ys style. It was only released in Japan, but I played it on an emulator and someone was kind enough to make an English patch.
The Genesis is a poor mans X68000. Thats what I call it nowadays. The Sharp X68000 was Sharp's ambition to bring out a computer that had arcade quality hardware. The problem was that it was so expensive that no one could afford it (try paying $3000 for a computer in 1987, or $8000 in todays dollars) for years, mostly game/arcade developers bought it to develop their games. In short, the X68000 uses a Yamaha YM2151, the Genesis uses a YM2612. The YM2612 was designed for consoles and computers in mind, the YM2151 was designed for Yamaha synthesizers. The YM2151 has 8 voices, the YM2612 has 6. If you want to hear the difference between the 2 chips, listen to the Genesis version of the game Arcus Odyssey, then listen to the X68000 (original?) version.
I really liked this game as a kid, but let's be completely honest, outside of the (absolutely stellar!) soundtrack, this game was CRAP. Tiny fucking sword is tiny. I JUST FELL IN ANOTHER FUCKING BOTTOMLESS PIT!??!?? Super unforgiving grinding required bosses that take 0 damage if your sword isn't a high enough level. The worst magic system ever conceived outside of Ys' rings. Use your only medical herb? Hope you find one in a chest. Or you can backtrack ALL THE FUCKING WAY BACK TO ELFLAND, which you have to do if you EVER want to buy a Shiny Stone in this game. I loved this game as a kid, but it is a bad game. There, I said it. Now I'll listen to the Lagoon Castle theme on loop for a few hours because it's that awesome.
+DancesWith Chihuahuas Haha, well, I kind of agreed until I played the original version on the Sharp x68000. It's much better. You push the sword into enemies, Ys style, instead of swinging it and it works out much better. The graphics and sound are much better, and the story seems to be better although I admit I can't read Japanese so I don't know exactly what they were saying. But it's much different, I can definitely say that.
I rented this game as a kid and loved it. I have tried to go back to it to rediscover what I loved and I can't seem to find it. I want to take a deep dive one day. See what I can find.
I would have to play through it again to give a comment on the matter, because the last time I played "Lagoon" I was about 11 years old. I do recall the tiny sword part though :P
+David Simmons I know, the names on the list are wrong but I kept them the way they came with the soundtrack. I fixed the names as best as I could on the Sharp x68k version.
Great game, one down fall, swinging your sword is like using tooth pick, no disrespect, great game, great soundtrack, wished the attack was long as game like soul blader, great game nonetheless.
11:33 my favorite track, the boss theme is sick, but the game is terrible despite having a great soundtrack, I saw gameplay on PJ's speedrun would never play this crappy game though.
The only negative thing when i played it in my childhood was that the sword has an extremely short range, you basically had to stand right next to the monster to hit him. Even worse for the big stone boss, that could only be hit in the mouth.
The box is hilarious. "The 3-D action fantasy that is attracting RPG players in waves." 1. The game is not remotely 3-D. Not even. It is 2D, not even isolinear. 2. The graphics are really poor. The people look like they are made of Play-Do. 3. The only saving grace really is the music, which at times is epic. Especially the opening.

this music... I have been transported to my childhood bedroom, playing this on a too-gaussy TV built into a wooden cabinet
What does gaussy mean?

Me with Walking in the Shadows, such an eerie track. That music scared the hell out of kid me and getting lost made it so much worse

@@EvanCastor I usually come here for Valley
Oddly, some tracks in this game, like 16:13 could be in a racing game, just as Kemco's Top Gear.
I kinda want to hear what this soundtrack sounds like with genesis soundfonts. Lots of bass...
did you hear the original Sharp x68000 version? Definitely different sound chip, better I think
Castle Mark Philips lol
This game's music screams late 80s.
Well, it is. The original version on the Sharp x68000 came out in 1990, the SNES version a year later.
Does anyone happen to know who composed the music for Lagoon?
Not fantastic, but very very good. You can feel emotions in it.
The box art is so cool looking but so misleading about the game within.
Amazing soundtrack. Amazing story. But the game could have been a lot better.
Sharp x68000 version - no more?
Sorry, I updated it!

@@Red88Rex Thanks, never heard it before. It is Lagoon and Castlevania IV tracks that sound in my head recalling those days...
number 5
It was referred to as "Toothpick" or just "Pick" when I was a wee lad among my friends.
Me and my sister called it Nasir's butter knife.
I do recall the tiny sword part though :P
number wasn't volah,it was that cafe not sure the name.
+David Simmons I know, the names on the list are wrong but I kept them the way they came with the soundtrack. I fixed the names as best as I could on the Sharp x68k version.
+Red88Rex oh my bad I actually just noticed that in your description. thanks alot
Great game, one down fall, swinging your sword is like using tooth pick, no disrespect, great game, great soundtrack, wished the attack was long as game like soul blader, great game nonetheless.
you should watch the original Sharp x68000 version then ;)
Attracting rpg players in WAVES! Ha ha! 'Cause there's waves on the box art! Oh that joke is terrible.
Lakeland has a drinking problem
11:33 my favorite track, the boss theme is sick, but the game is terrible despite having a great soundtrack, I saw gameplay on PJ's speedrun would never play this crappy game though.
The only negative thing when i played it in my childhood was that the sword has an extremely short range, you basically had to stand right next to the monster to hit him. Even worse for the big stone boss, that could only be hit in the mouth.
The box is hilarious. "The 3-D action fantasy that is attracting RPG players in waves."
1. The game is not remotely 3-D. Not even. It is 2D, not even isolinear.
2. The graphics are really poor. The people look like they are made of Play-Do.
3. The only saving grace really is the music, which at times is epic. Especially the opening.
Great music. Horrible 3-inch swords.
I need an extended version of castle mark Phillips. such a great ost for this piece of shit game hahaha
