I remember from my online research there was an Chinese philosopher (Confucius, Chinese philosopher) did that too, instead of staying in the imperial court he went to live with the common people to learn from them and seekout a proper leader to be taught his philosophy. .
How interesting that some were drawn to austerity of socialism and exclusion of fascism- I guess when you are born into enormous wealth, brutality and suffering seem quaint.
