Mental Breather should be a class. Almost like study hall and PE/Gym combined but without any studying or running or physical activity. It's just a class where everyone can sit down and talk, dance, cry, etc. (ok maybe not dance) and then the teacher could teach about emotions, emotional control, correct ways to handle situations, and always be there for students who have certain situations. whether that be at home, school, social, mental, emotional, etc. etc.

@ - "Teaching to the test" has always been deemed a failure and was exacerbated by Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program. This wasn't educating, this was propping up grades over actual lessons. Also, the past 2 generations wouldn't need to live with their parents if wages weren't stagnant for the last 50 years while housing and cost-of-living continue to rise. You can thank Reagan's trickle-down economy and Clinton's trade programs for that. These neocons and neolibs decentralized and deregulated our public sectors and corporations, to the point that the wealth got concentrated at the top. This left the working class to work 4x as much as previous gens, but with little returns to show for it forcing many to postpone home-buying, marriage, raising a family, etc. You left alot of this context out of your little mini rants.

@Bee Extinct Good teachers are also life coaches, especially for kids who have parents who don't know how to parent.
A good teacher reinforces the parents who do have rules.
Years ago, when my daughter was 12 was becoming a bit rebellious and I laid down the rules. She complained to her teacher who my daughter admired a lot and told her how mean I was. The teacher told her that I was right and agreed with the punishment I had laid down. My daughter was shocked that her very cool teacher sided with her old fashioned mom.

A nurse from outside should hold a class that briefly lets them know trusted services that the youngster can talk with when it comes to puberty, also mental health, safeguarding(if they haven't got the greatest relationship with those at home) but thats as far as it really needs to go.
The schooling should also highlight the difference between academics and how to adapt to real life circumstances and stages that inevitably will come about.
Its easy to narrow it down to yes and no. But in the multitudes of respected perspectives there are not too many things we can do other than give these youngsterd the tools to pave their way forward. Unfortunately we live in the digital age, and also have a lot of nonces, gang life groomers and corperate robots that don't have empathy. The question is how do you teach a youngster to help themselves and others. Well I'd start from giving them the self confidence and self-esteem boost they need. Show them lots of different pathways in life and open out their perspectives so they are already ready to face the chance of them not doing what they want to do the first time. We would drink hot chocolate and talk about things going on. The news, home, stress, etc. She provided a safe space for anyone who needed it, which I very much appreciated as I didn’t have one at home. She helped me through so much, and I even passed her class with a 9! I will always remember her and I’m so thankful she gave me hope and motivation to go on even when things got rough. I truly hope you will be like her and change many students lives.

Emotions do come and go, and yes children need to learn to regulate their reaction to their own emotions, but the first step to doing that is to recognize that you have them and learn the appropriate way to communicate them. Not by forcing them to surpress their emotions or teaching them to be ashamed for having them. That is pushing them down a very unhealthy path.

Likewise, teachers shouldn't be overstepping their role and doing the same. The point, if its lost on you, is that science teachers teach science, math teachers teach math, but opinions about how children should deal with emotions or sexuality or whatever is not only the responsibility but the RIGHT of the parent to instill upon their children. For example, religion isn't taught in schools, why? Not because anything is wrong with religion, but because its a parent's right to choose what, if any, religious teachings the child should receive as that is a personal matter.

I almost broke down with this one. Reminds me a lot of a teacher I had in middle school who passed away a couple of years ago. I looked up to her like a mother because that was just who she was, to everyone. I can still hear in the back of my head "Be good, make smart choices. I'll see you all tomorrow," which was her daily quote at the end of class. She ended up passing away only a week and a half after her father. She would always tell us so many stories of how she adored him, I like to think that she died of a broken heart.
Rest in Peace, Katharine. I hope that one day I can impact as many lives as you did.

I hope she's being treated right by that school, there's so many great teachers out there who after some time quit teaching altogether because of the way, on multiple occasions, the school system turns against their own staff. Teachers can have a huge impact in their students' lives, but the school system can make teachers lose their passion for teaching, so that's also very important. As much as I understand the students have their needs, so do the teachers and they should always be treated with the exact same understanding and respect.
